Sipping on History: The Story of Moulin Touchais's Sweet Chenin Blanc and its Availability at Hudson Valley Wine Bars

It's possible that Chenin Blanc, also known as Pineau de la Loire, arrived in the Loire Valley more than a millennium ago. It was founded in the fifteenth century. Additionally, the wine is comparable to Cabernet Franc, which the French writer Rabelais also praised. It reaches its highest and most distinctive expression only in a 100-mile stretch of the Loire Valley between Blois and Savennières, where it is widely planted in South Africa and the United States.

When it's extremely warm in the fall, there isn't any rain, and the frost comes late. The botrytis infection makes the grape skins permeable, allowing the water in the grapes to evaporate and resulting in grape shriveling on the vine. The juice of these overripe grapes is extremely concentrated and has a refreshing acidity. It is exceptionally sweet however adjusted, which is the characteristic of an incredible treat wine. Long-lived, comparable sweet wines can be produced by the Quarts de Chaume, Bonnezeaux, Coteaux du Layon, and Vouvray vineyards.

The Quarts de Chaume, Coteaux du Layon, and Bonnezeaux appellations, which have captivated wine enthusiasts for centuries, are home to some of the most well-known Chenin Blancs in the world in the Loire Valley, which is located in the center of France. From those, one of the most mind-blowing champions is Moulin Touchais, prestigious for its excellent Coteaux du Layons. Moulin Touchais is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1787 and has been making wine for eight generations.

Their sweet Chenin Blanc is aged for at least ten years in the vast cellars of Doué-la-Fontaine village, producing stunningly evolved wines that are truly one-of-a-kind. In comparison to other harvesting methods, Moulin Touchais's is unique. By combining slightly underripe and late-harvest grapes, they achieve a truly remarkable balance of acidity and sweetness. From exemplary treat Chenin fragrances to mineral and chamomile noticed, every one of a kind brings its own pizazz, making each jug another experience.

Chenin Blanc can be vinified in a range of styles from austere, honeyed, mineral, refreshing, to rich and sweet, unlike any other grape except Riesling. Chenin Blanc is subject to Botrytis cinerea. From Sauternes in Bordeaux to Germany’s Trockenbeerenauslese to Hungary’s Tokaji, Botrytis is the mould responsible for all great sweet wines. You can taste the best Chenin Blanc at Hudson Valley wine bars.
