Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify the components of complex mixtures of chemicals. It is a combination of two techniques: Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS). In GC, the sample is vaporized and separated into its individual components based on their physical and chemical properties as they travel through a column filled with a stationary phase. The separated components then pass through a detector which produces a signal based on the concentration of each component. The resulting chromatogram provides information about the components present in the sample and their relative concentrations. In MS, the components from GC are ionized and fragmented into smaller molecules which are then separated based on their mass-to-charge ratio using an electric field. The resulting mass spectrum provides information about the molecular weight and structural characteristics of each component, allowing for the identification of unknown compounds.

The combination of GC and MS provides a powerful analytical tool for a wide range of applications, including environmental analysis, forensic science, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverage testing, and more. GC-MS can identify and quantify a wide range of compounds, from small molecules such as drugs and pesticides to complex biomolecules such as proteins and lipids. GC-MS can be used in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis involves identifying the components present in a sample, while quantitative analysis involves determining the concentration of each component.
