A chitin derivative called Chitosan is taken out of the shells of aquatic animals like lobsters, prawns and crabs. Due to its ability to prevent fat absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, chitosan is a common ingredient in dietary supplements. Due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility, it is also utilised in a number of therapeutic applications. Due to its anticoagulant characteristics, it is utilised in hemostatic dressing to treat wounds.


The de-acetylated kind of chitin, or Chitosan, is a biopolymer that has been taken from the shells of crustaceans like crabs, prawns and others. The shell waste has been described as containing a significant amount of chitin, which is further processed and converted into glucosamine, chitosan, and other derivatives. A waste shell often contains a significant amount of calcium carbonate and a small amount of chitin.


Chitosan has been explored for various environmental applications due to its biodegradability and low toxicity. It has been used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment applications to remove pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, and organic compounds. Chitosan-based adsorbents have been developed for the removal of pollutants from air and water.

 

Chitosan has also been explored for its potential in bioenergy applications. It has been shown to enhance the production of biogas from anaerobic digestion of organic wastes.

 

Chitosan has been used in various industrial applications due to its unique properties. It has been explored for the development of chiral separation agents, membrane filters, and ion-exchange resins. Chitosan-based materials have also been developed for the removal of impurities from industrial wastewater. Chitosan has also been explored for the development of biosensors for various applications such as food safety, environmental monitoring, and clinical diagnosis.
