Useful Tips For Making A Nice Mermaid Costume

Making a mermaid costume can be fun and easy. Whether for cosplay, costume or pretend, there are a lot of reasons you would like to dress up like a mermaid. Whilst you can buy a costume online or from your local thrift store, there is no guarantee that you will get something you like or something that fits you.

Making your own outfit ensures that you get both the design and quality that you want. With some extra steps such as adding the right makeup, hair, and accessories, you will be the envy of all the mermaids around.

Creating the tail base

To make the tail base, you should start by folding your fabric in half. Choose a stretchy and shiny fabric to use as your tail. You can get a lot of great options in the dance-wear section of your local fabric store. It is best if your fabric has a scale print on it. However, you can use a solid-coloured fabric. If you choose a fabric that has scales on it, you should ensure that the scales go down the fold and not across it. Green is a very popular mermaid colour. However, you can make any colour you want. If you want to be a tropical mermaid then you should consider orange.

Trace your pattern into your fabric

Put a fitted skirt on top of your fabric so that the top edges of the skirt match up. Now, trace around the sides with a dressmaker’s pen or chalk and add half an inch of the seam allowance. Extend the side edges down once you get to the bottom so that they reach where the knees would be.

Add a V-shape to the hem

This can be done even if you bought your costumes online. You can customise your costumes as you want. You should find the center of the hem and make a dot down where the mid-calf section will be. Now connect the dot to the right and left edges of the hem. Use a straight edge or ruler to ensure that the lines are straight. You can choose not to do this and instead draw a horizontal line straight across the bottom hem of your skirt.

Pin the fabric and cut it

You should then pin the fabric together using sewing pins and cut it out. The pins will prevent your fabric from slipping when you cut it. Let the sewing pins remain in place. Don’t pin the slanted sides of your V if you added a V-shaped hem.

Wear the skirt and adjust the width accordingly

Wear the skirt and pull it up to where you would like to sit. The material around your legs may be loose. If you would like it to be fitting, remove the pins and pin your skirt tighter. Now take the skirt off once you are done. If you made a tighter mermaid costume, take a few steps to make sure that you can walk comfortably in your costume. If you added a v-shaped hem to your outfit, you could end up pinning part of the sides on the V.
