Trouble That Results From Plumbing Leaks

Ceiling Leaks

Plumbing leaks in ceilings can cause more than just a hassle and an eyesore, they can also cause costly damage to a home. Often when a ceiling leaks, the underlying issue is an issue with the water supply line to a sink, bathtub, toilet, or shower. Leaking water supply lines can initially appear as small water spots on a ceiling, but over time can cause major damage including damaged ceilings, walls, and floors. Homeowners should be on the lookout for signs of water damage, such as water spots, peeling paint, bubbling paint, warped wood, water stains, mold, and mildew buildup, as these signs indicate that a leak is present.

Water pressure can also play a factor in a plumbing leak that results in a ceiling leak. If the pressure is too high, the water pressure can cause lines to burst, resulting in a leak in a ceiling. Maintaining proper pressures, through installing pressure-regulating valves or reducing the main water pressure, can help reduce the chances of this type of plumbing leak.

Pipe Leaks

Plumbing leaks from pipes can cause an array of problems, from decreased water pressure to extensive water damage. Pipe leaks can occur at pipe connections and in corroded, cracked, broken, or faulty pipes. Damaged or aging pipes are the most frequent cause of plumbing leaks and should be inspected regularly to ensure they are in good condition.

It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using supply lines and installing plumbing fixtures. If installed incorrectly, a water leak can occur at the connections, where pipes join other pipes, or at plumbing fixtures. Worn out or aged fixtures and pipes should be replaced to ensure the pipes are in good condition and that connections are secure.

Plumbing Leak Repair

When it comes to plumbing leaks, the sooner repairs are completed, the less water damage and expense the homeowner will need to endure. Plumbers commonly use one of two methods to deal with plumbing leaks, patching or replacing pipes or pipe connections.

Patching is the use of a sealant, epoxy paste, or liners to reduce water flow through damaged pipes and connections. If patching is done properly, it can temporarily seal the leak until a permanent solution is provided. However, if patching is not done correctly, the leak can worsen.

Replacing the plumbing pipes and connections should be done by a licensed local plumber. Trying to repair a plumbing leak without properly trained help can result in further damage, not to mention costly repairs. A professional plumber will test for leaks and make sure the connections are properly installed.

It’s important for homeowners to regularly inspect the pipes and connections for any signs of wear and tear or deterioration. Taking preventative measures such as performing routine inspections can help reduce the chance of a leak, as well as costly repairs.
