Similar to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Japanese swimmers will secure automatic qualification for the Olympics. And that will be possible if they clinch an individual gold medal at this year's World Championships. Therefore, swimmers such as Daiya Seto, Tomoru Honda, and Reona Aoki could feel more relaxed with a gold medal draped around their necks. As knowing that they have already earned their place on the Japanese roster for the 2024 Games, provided they win the top prize.

During the 2019 World Championships, only Seto secured automatic qualification for Tokyo. It was done by winning the world titles in Gwangju’s 200m IM and 400m IM. Swimmers who want to replicate this achievement in Fukuoka. They will only need to participate in the 2024 Japan Championships to confirm their spot on the roster.

Securing a place on the podium, let alone a gold medal, at Fukuoka is an extremely challenging task. As all swimmers bringing their best game. The top tier of Japanese talent and the events they will participate in will be clearer after the Japan Championships in April. Meanwhile, some of the leading contenders are ready to compete for Fukuoka gold. And they want to get a chance to qualify for Paris 2024.

France Olympic: Daiya Seto and Reona Aoki will be competing at World Aquatics Championships for Paris Olympic Spot

At 28 years of age, Seto is already one of the top 5 performers globally. And these are the 200m IM and 400m IM events this season. He clocked a time of 1:56.72 at January's Kosuke Kitajima Cup in the former. And he recorded 4:10.14 at December's Japan Swim in the latter. In 2022, Seto had a remarkable year as he secured his sixth consecutive short course world title in the 400m IM. And becoming the first man to achieve this feat.

In Fukuoka, Seto is expected to face tough competition from challengers. Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz of the United States and Leon Marchand of France will compete there. Additionally, his domestic rival Tomoru Honda will also try to make his mark in the 400m IM. While New Zealand's Lewis Clareburt and Australian Brendan Smith will also be looking to challenge Seto for the gold.

Aoki is still searching for her breakthrough meet. And the home-based World Championships could allow her to claim the top spot on the podium. The 28-year-old has been posting some impressive times in the 100m breaststroke. And currently ranked second globally with a time of 1:06.11, which she achieved at the Japan Open.

Aoki finished fifth in Budapest’s 100m breaststroke event last year, clocking in at 1:06.38. However, if she manages to improve her time and bring it down to the 1:05 range. Then she could become a strong contender for the podium. She will be competing against reigning world champion Benedetta Pilato of Italy, and the resurging Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte. And other than that the ever-present American Lilly King in the race.

Paris 2024: Ippei Watanabe appears to be getting back to his old self for Olympic 2024

The former 200m breaststroke world record holder appears to be returning to his former form. He is 25 years old and a two-time bronze medalist at the World Championships. He missed out on the 2020 Olympic Games in his speciality event, the 200m breaststroke. However, after taking some time off, he is starting to perform at a level we have come to expect from the Tsukumi native.

Currently, Watanabe is tied with his Japanese teammate Shoma Sato as the top swimmer in the world in his main event, the 200m breaststroke. Both swimmers clocked a time of 2:08.55 in January of this year. Watanabe's personal best and former world record stands at 2:06.67, achieved in 2017. However, Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook set a new world record at an astonishing 2:05.95. Watanabe will need to swim faster than ever before to challenge the Australian for the gold medal in Fukuoka this summer.

France Olympic: Ikee Rikako and Matsumoto to lead Aquatics Championships for France Olympic Qualification

On Monday, April 10th, the Japan Swimming Federation revealed its team for the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, with Ikee Rikako and Matsumoto Katsuhiro leading the charge for the host country. This will be her first world championship in six years, and the first since her leukaemia diagnosis in early 2019. Although Ikee wasn't expecting to win the 100 fly on the first day, her success continued from there. While Ikee expressed her excitement for the upcoming event, she also acknowledged that she needs to elevate her performance, as she isn't entirely satisfied with her times.

Matsumoto had an impressive performance at the Japan Swim 2023, winning all three of his events and qualifying for the World Aquatics Championships in each of them. He even set a new Japan record in the 100m butterfly with a time of 47.85 seconds, making him the only swimmer to achieve this feat at the meet.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Narita Mio also shone at the competition, winning both the women's 200m and 400m individual medleys and earning a spot on Japan's world championship team. With her outstanding performance, Narita is quickly becoming one of Japan's most promising young swimmers.
