Silicates are the most abundant minerals on Earth because they are formed from the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust, silicon and oxygen. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust after oxygen. It is a very reactive element and readily combines with oxygen to form silicon dioxide, which is the main component of quartz.

These processes have led to the formation of sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, and igneous rocks. Silicates are an important component of all three types of rocks.
