Time series data frequently demonstrates seasonality and trend. While seasonality refers to predictable, recurring patterns that occur at regular periods, trend refers to the long-term upward or downward movement of data. In time series analysis and forecasting, it is crucial to recognise and take into consideration trend and seasonality.


Observations made at various times are compared using the autocorrelation statistic. In contrast to negative autocorrelation, which denotes an inverse link, positive autocorrelation indicates a connection between recent and earlier observations. Picking the right forecasting models is aided by an understanding of autocorrelation.


Different Types of Time Series Forecasting Models


Moving Average (MA) Models: MA models forecast future values based on the average of previous observations. The number of lag observations taken into account is indicated by the order of an MA model (for example, MA(1), MA(2)). When a time series exhibits random oscillations devoid of trend or seasonality, MA models might be helpful.


Autoregressive (AR) models: AR models forecast future values based on historical values. The amount of lagged observations utilised in an AR model depends on the order (for instance, AR(1), AR(2)). In the lack of seasonality, trend and arbitrary variations can be captured using AR models.


Using differencing to handle non-stationary data, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models combine the ideas of AR and MA models. In order to remove trend and make the data steady, differencing requires removing consecutive observations. A variety of time series patterns can be handled by the adaptable ARIMA models.


SARIMA (seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average) models Through the addition of seasonal elements, SARIMA models expand ARIMA models. To identify recurring patterns and long-term trends, they take into account both seasonal and non-seasonal variations in the data.


Models using exponential smoothing (ES): ES models anticipate future values using weighted averages of previous observations, giving more weight to recent data points. They are especially helpful when there is no obvious trend or seasonality in the time series.


Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) kind are able to recognise long-term dependencies in time series data.
