Geopolymer: A Smart Material for Sensing and Actuation

Geopolymer is a material that can sense and actuate various physical, chemical, or biological stimuli such as temperature, pressure, humidity, pH, gas, light, sound, electric field, magnetic field, strain, stress etc. Geopolymer is an inorganic polymer that is formed by activating aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash, slag, metakaolin, and rice husk ash with alkaline solutions. Geopolymer has a smart structure and composition that can exhibit various sensing and actuation phenomena such as:

Thermo-responsive: Geopolymer can sense and actuate temperature changes by changing its volume, shape, color, conductivity, or permeability. Geopolymer can be used for thermo-responsive applications such as thermal switches, valves, sensors etc.

Photo-responsive: Geopolymer can sense and actuate light changes by changing its color, transparency, luminescence, or conductivity. Geopolymer can be used for photo-responsive applications such as optical switches, displays, sensors etc.

Electro-responsive: Geopolymer can sense and actuate electric changes by changing its shape, size, conductivity, or polarization. Geopolymer can be used for electro-responsive applications such as actuators, transducers, sensors etc.

Magneto-responsive: Geopolymer can sense and actuate magnetic changes by changing its shape, size, magnetization, or permeability. Geopolymer can be used for magneto-responsive applications such as actuators, transducers, sensors etc.
