Choosing the Most Secure Window Style for Your Home

Ensuring the security and safety of your home is of utmost importance for every homeowner. While overall home security practices are crucial, paying special attention to your windows is essential, as they can serve as vulnerable entry points. Opting for the right window style equipped with advanced security features is a key step in enhancing window security. Whether you're replacing, upgrading, or installing new windows, considering options with built-in security features is highly advisable.

Window Casements Using an internal gear system, casement windows have a single pane that opens outward and vertically. The advantage of this design is the ability to control the extent to which the window opens using a crank mounted on the interior window frame. This style is particularly suitable for challenging-to-reach areas, such as those behind a kitchen sink.

In terms of security, Casement windows are among the most secure window types. Since the crank cannot be operated from the outside, as long as you close and lock the window, no one can open it from the exterior.

Sliding Windows Sliding windows offer a classic design with a single operable sash that slides horizontally. They are often used for larger glass panes, allowing homeowners to enjoy expansive outdoor views and fresh air when fully opened. Sliding windows are a great option when outdoor clearance is limited compared to casement windows.

To enhance security, sliding windows come with a cam action lock that prevents the operable pane from sliding back and forth. For additional security, a burglar bar can be installed between the window frame and sliding sash, ensuring that the window cannot be operated from the outside.

Double Hung Windows This timeless window style moves vertically, featuring two operable sashes instead of one like single-hung windows. The double-hung variety offers the convenience of opening the upper sash for ventilation while keeping the lower sash closed. Similar to sliding windows, double hung windows use a cam action lock to hold the sashes in place, preventing movement.

For added security, modern double-hung windows often come with extra hardware installed on the top sash's frame. When a tab is pushed in, the bottom sash can move, but when extended, the window is securely locked. Additionally, you can purchase and install this hardware separately on older double-hung windows to boost security.

Aluminium Window Frames The choice of window frame material is another critical aspect affecting security. Aluminium frames are an excellent option due to their remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, providing both durability and lightweight qualities. Aluminium frames are not only reliable but also stylish, easy to maintain, and cost-effective.
