What Are Solar Power Inverters?

Solar panels generate direct current (DC), but households rely on alternating current (AC). Inverters change the raw DC electricity from your solar panels into usable AC power that your home can use.

Peak efficiency indicates how efficient your inverter is when it’s operating at its optimal voltage and current levels. Weighted efficiencies take into account that peak performance won’t occur every day.

Input Voltage

The input voltage of a best solar inverters is defined as the maximum DC voltage it can process. This value varies from one model to another and is usually given in the manufacturer’s specification datasheet.

This maximum voltage must not be exceeded. Doing so can damage the inverter. It is also important to ensure that the PV array’s output never exceeds the inverter’s AC power rating. This is often called inverter clipping, and can lead to energy loss if the inverter is not properly sized.

Stand-alone inverters typically produce a pure sine wave, quasi-sine pulse-width modulated (PWM) or square wave. Depending on circuit design, some may also produce near-square waves. This type of distortion is called total harmonic distortion (THD). Technical standards for power distribution grids recommend that the THD is less than 3% at the point of connection.

Output Voltage

The output voltage of a solar inverter determines how many devices you can power at once. A higher output wattage means you can run more appliances at once, while a lower one means you can only power a few devices at a time.

A good solar inverter can convert DC power into a functioning AC signal for the grid, or an AC signal that matches your house’s existing alternating current (AC). It does this by switching back and forth quickly to create a clean, repeating sine wave that can be injected into the grid.

Solar inverters also help prevent islanding, which is the process of continuing to inject solar power into the grid when the power is cut by a utility worker for maintenance or repairs. They can shut off or reduce their output to prevent this from happening. They also ensure that no electricity is sent to the external power lines, protecting line workers from injury.

Efficiency

It's not possible to convert power without losing some of it (think of friction). Lost energy manifests as heat. Typically, efficiency varies with load. For example, small loads like night lights or clocks will draw power from the inverter even when it isn't producing AC. These are called phantom loads.

Solar power inverters can prevent electricity from transmitting to external power lines during a power outage, which helps keep line workers safe when checking or repairing the grid. They can also be used to feed excess solar electricity back into the grid, if you have a solar battery backup or won't be using all of your generated energy.

Microinverters electrically isolate each solar panel from its neighbours, so shading or debris on one module doesn't disproportionately reduce the output of the entire array. They also harvest optimum power by performing panel-level maximum power point tracking. This adds up to higher efficiency and more reliable solar power production.

Warranty

Solar panel inverters are a crucial component of your solar system. They work night and day to transform the direct current that comes from your solar panels into alternating current, which your home can use. Solar power inverters can sometimes fail due to manufacturing flaws, corrosion, or normal wear and tear. Inverters that come with a product warranty will provide you with peace of mind.

Some solar inverters will include labour costs in their product warranties, while others will not. Depending on the manufacturer, they may choose to repair the inverter at their facility, ship a replacement unit, or even offer a credit for the value of your broken inverter. Additionally, if your solar service provider has to travel to get your inverter repaired, there will likely be shipping and customs charges that will not be covered by the warranty. However, these charges are typically only a small portion of the overall cost of the repair.
