Past Events

The university was founded in 1827 when the Wolverhampton Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Institute merged. Wolverhampton Free Library (1870) was updated in the evening sessions for technical, scientific, commercial, and general subjects at that time. In 1926, this led to the establishment of the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College. Prince George placed the cornerstone of the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College in 1931. Since its establishment in 1945, the music department has gained popularity among technical colleges. The name Wolverhampton and Staffordshire College of Technology was adopted in 1951. In an effort to broaden higher education, the college started offering BA degree programs in 1964.

The college's name was once more changed to Wolverhampton College of Technology in 1966. Subsequently, the Wolverhampton Polytechnic and the Municipal School of Art were founded in 1969. Sir Charles Wheeler founded the New School of Art and Design, which came into being in 1970. The Polytechnic changed renamed Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1988. The Polytechnic received university status in 1992 and changed its name to the University of Wolverhampton.
