The Importance of Early Childhood Education

Providing children with high-quality early childhood education can help them succeed in school. Studies have shown that kids who receive quality care are more likely to graduate from high school and go on to college.

In addition, access to child care allows parents to work full time and earn higher wages than those without it. This may be especially important for low-income families.

Daily Routines

Early childcare education need to develop daily routines that balance teacherinitiated activities for large and small groups with child-initiated play. Teachers should plan, introduce and guide specific activities that enhance children's learning during these times, but they also need to leave enough time for children to explore classroom centers and outdoor equipment on their own without teacher guidance.

A routine provides a sense of predictability to children's day and allows them to feel confident that their needs will be met. A routine can be as simple as a morning meeting during which priorities for the day are set and general timeframes for activity blocks are created.

Displaying a word and picture schedule on a wall near the entrance area helps children know what to expect during each activity block of their day. Providing quiet options for children who finish early, such as picture books or puzzles or a chance to work on a pencil drawing or pipe cleaner shapes, is important as well.

Social Skills

Social skills are crucial for a child’s life-long mental health and success. Children who lack these skills are less likely to create lasting relationships, have trouble adapting to school and are more prone to behavioral issues and poor academic performance [1, 2].

Early childhood education is where kids get the opportunity to develop their social skills in a safe environment with supportive educators. They learn how to play together, interact with their peers and resolve conflicts. They also become familiar with other adults through interactions in their community. For example, some schools help children build connections with their elderly neighbors by visiting them and chatting about daily life.

A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education prepares students for positions at daycare childcare centre and other similar organizations where they can work with kids. This career can be lucrative and offers a stable job market. Many of these jobs require teaching certification to start. The NYCEEC Study Plan allows teachers to earn their certification while teaching.

Physical Activity

Young kids have lots of energy that they need to expend. Playing physical games and activities teaches them to use their bodies in different ways, which can help with both mental and physical development. Regular exercise has many short and long-term health benefits, including reducing the risk of disease, boosting energy levels and building strong muscles and bones.

Childcare Center Director

The director of a childcare business center oversees all the teachers and childcare workers in the school, planning the budget, and developing the educational standards for the program. Some directors work at independent centers that they own, while others are employed by a chain or franchise.

BMCC offers an online Associate in Science degree in Child Care and Early Childhood Education that can be completed in evening and weekend classes. The program also includes a practicum and internship that allow students to gain hands-on experience in the field. The course “Play as Pedagogy” is a case study class that highlights the importance of observing children at play.

Language Skills

Using their language skills, children are able to express their emotions and communicate with others. Having this ability allows them to make sense of the world around them and helps them learn new things. Moreover, it is the first step towards understanding society’s expectations.

A key researcher in child development, Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, linked cognitive advancement to language skills acquisition. He believed that a child must grasp a topic before learning its verbal form. This is known as assimilation and accommodation.

According to research, children who receive quality ECEC demonstrate improved vocabulary, communication and problem-solving than those who do not. This is especially true of children from socioeconomically backward households.

Exposing a child to rich language is the best way to promote early literacy. Teachers should focus on code-based instruction, which teaches the connection between spoken language and print (National Early Literacy Panel, 2008). In addition to this, they should also consider sending home books in the child’s home language.
