Role of Construction Chemicals in Modern Building and Infrastructure Projects

Construction chemicals play a vital role in modern construction projects across various industries like building, infrastructure development, roads and highways etc. With advancement in technology, new types of construction chemicals are introducing that are making construction activities faster, safer and more durable.

Admixtures in Concrete

Admixtures are chemicals added to concrete before or during mixing to improve its properties. Some common types of concrete admixtures are:

- Plasticizers: They are added to concrete mixtures to improve workability and fluidity without adding more water. This allows concrete to flow easily and get compacted properly during placing reducing voids. Some popular plasticizers are lignosulfonates and polycarboxylate based superplasticizers.

- Accelerators: These speed up the setting and hardening process of concrete. They are useful when rapid setting and early strength gain is required like in precast construction chemicals. Calcium chloride is a commonly used accelerator.

- Retarders: On the contrary, retarders slow down the setting of concrete. They are used when there is a need to extend the workable life of concrete like in large pours or ready mix concrete transportation. Lignin derivatives are common retarding admixtures.

- Air-entraining admixtures: They entrain microscopic air bubbles in concrete improving its workability, plasticity and resistance to freeze-thaw damage. Vinsol based and neutralized vinsol resins are air-entraining agents.

Admixtures have significantly improved various properties of concrete allowing wider applications in construction. Modern concretes with specific admixtures are stronger, more workable and durable.

Crack Fillers and Joint Sealants

Crack fillers and joint sealants play an important maintenance and repair role in structures. They are used to seal control joints, expansion joints and cracks in buildings, bridges, roads etc. to prevent entry and passage of water and chemicals.

- Elastomeric sealants: Synthetic rubber/polymer based one part or two-part sealants like silicone, polyurethane, polysulfide etc. provide elastic and flexible seals. They seal structural joints horizontally as well as vertically.

- Epoxy based crack fillers: High strength two-part epoxy resins filled withfine aggregates are used to repair cracks in concrete structures from hairline to 1/4 inch. They bond strongly and add structural integrity.

- Bituminous/asphaltic joint sealants: Asphalt or tar based sealants with or without filler are economical products suitable for controlling smaller cracks and contraction joints in roads, highways etc.

Regular maintenance of joints and cracks through proper sealing extends the life of structures significantly by preventing damage due to water and chemical ingress.

Adhesives for Various Applications

Adhesives are extensively used for bonding and assembly of construction materials and components. Some common construction adhesives are:

- Cementitious adhesives: Dry powder adhesives that set through hydration when mixed with water. Used for tile/stone fixing and fabrications.

- Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesives: Emulsion adhesives for woodworking and non-structural applications.

- Epoxy adhesives: Strong two-part adhesives for structural gluing and fixing. Set through chemical reaction.

- Silicone sealants: High strength sealants capable of adhering to various substrates.

- Polyurethane adhesives (PU): Are solvent-free, flexible adhesives suitable for fabrication works and installations.

- Acrylic adhesives: High strength products for metal bonding and fastening. Also UV resistant.

Adhesives have substituted mechanical fasteners for permanent assembly of varied building components enabling faster construction. Their judicious selection complements building designs and processes.

Waterproofing Systems

Waterproofing is a core requirement in construction to prevent seepage, dampness and leakage. Different types of waterproofing methods are used as per structure and application:

- Cementitious systems: Consisting of cement and polymer-modified compounds that form an impermeable layer when cured. Used on roofs, terraces, basements etc.

- Bituminous systems: Mastic asphalt, coal tar, polymeric modified asphalt form flexible membranes for roofs, plaza decks, below grade structures.

- Liquid applied polyurethane, acrylic, epoxy coatings: Form seamless elastomeric coats over surfaces protecting from water ingress.

- Pre-fabricated geomembranes: Thermoplastic sheets of PVC, TPO, HDPE for lining reservoirs, landfills, canals providing high performance waterproofing.

- Injection grouting: Filling of voids and cracks below surface with chemical grouts restores waterproof integrity.

Adequate waterproofing is necessary to safeguard building durability, structural safety and prevent large repair costs. Newer green waterproofing technologies offer better performance.

Concrete Flooring Solutions

Various chemical systems are used for hardening, protecting and beautifying concrete floors in commercial and industrial buildings:

- Concrete hardeners and densifiers: Lithium and silicon based compounds impart hardness under the surface of fresh concrete making it dense and durable to withstand traffic.

- Concrete sealers: Penetrating sealers seal the concrete pores preventing ingress of water, oils and chemicals. Acrylic sealers provide aesthetic look too.

- Epoxy coatings: Self-leveling epoxy overlays applied over surfaces provide a smooth, seamless and chemical resistant floor topping. Available in varied colors.

- Polyaspartic coatings: Fast curing aromatic polyurea coatings offering a glossy protective layer unaffected by UV light, chemicals or fuel spills.

- Concrete dyes and stains: Integral coloring additives giving concrete decorative look resembling natural stone or terrazzo without high costs.

Flooring solutions enhance strength, life, aesthetics of concrete floors in a cost-effective way reducing future maintenance needs.
