What are Solar Collector Tubes?


Solar collector tubes, also known as evacuated tube solar collectors, are devices used for collecting solar radiation and converting it into usable thermal energy. As the name suggests, these collectors consist of a series of glass tubes from which air or water is heated by the sun's rays. Each tube contains a heat absorbent surface, usually a copper pipe, that absorbs solar energy. The absorbed heat is then transferred to the air or water circulating inside the tube.


Working Principle


The working principle of solar collector tubes is quite simple. During the day, when sunlight falls on the outer glass tube, the light rays pass through and are absorbed by the blackened copper absorber inside. This causes the absorber's temperature to rise significantly. A working fluid, usually water or a water-glycol mixture, circulates inside the absorber through a mechanism of pumps and pipes. As the absorber heats up, it transfers the thermal energy to the flowing fluid. This heated fluid can then be used for applications like water heating, space heating or cooling.


Key Components


The main components of a solar collector tube include:


- Outer Glass Tube: Made of borosilicate glass or quartz glass that allows maximum sunlight transmission while providing insulation.


- Inner Glass Tube: Separates the absorber from the outer glass tube to create a vacuum between the two. This prevents heat losses.


- Absorber: Often a copper pipe whose surface is coated with selective coatings to maximize solar absorption and minimize thermal losses.


- Insulation: Reflective foils or vacuum provide insulation between the inner and outer glass tubes to reduce heat losses.


- Fluid Transfer System: A closed loop system circulates water or other heat transfer fluid through the absorber pipe collecting heat energy.


Advantages over Flat Plate Collectors


Solar collector tubes offer various advantages over conventional flat plate collectors:


- Higher Efficiency: Solar Collector Tube can absorb 30-50% more solar radiation than flat plates due to concentration effects of glass perimeter. Overall system efficiency is 15-20% higher.


- Reduced Heat Loss: Vacuum insulation between tubes minimizes conductive and convective heat losses significantly.


- Year-Round Functioning: Tubes efficiently collect diffuse radiation even in cloudy or winter conditions where flat plates are insufficient.


- Freeze Protection: Fluid circulating through the absorber prevents freezing even at sub-zero temperatures. Tubes can be installed at steeper angles.


- Longer Lifespan: Glass vacuum sealing provides protection against environmental contaminants and corrosion, lasting 25-30 years typically.


- Compact Design: Tubes require 30% less collector area compared to plates of same capacity. Tubes can be stacked or installed at various angles utilizing space efficiently.


Applications of Solar Collector Tubes


With their ability to efficiently harness solar energy throughout the year, collector tubes find widespread use for both domestic and industrial applications:


Water Heating

- Solar water heaters using collector tubes are popular residential and commercial applications. Pre-heated water is used to supplement electric/gas water heaters, reducing utility costs significantly.


Space Heating

- Collector tubes heat water/glycol which circulates through radiators, underfloor heating coils or air handlers to provide space heating in buildings.


Cooling

- Absorption chillers use heat from tubes to power cooling cycles, providing space cooling or refrigeration without electricity.


Swimming Pool Heating

- Heat collected by tubes is used to maintain pool temperatures even during winter/off-season in many regions.


Greenhouse Heating

- Tube collectors help maintain optimum temperatures inside greenhouses for commercial horticulture without fossil fuels.
