Wellness initiatives help employees develop a healthy mindset and adopt healthier behaviors. They also lower health risks, which leads to cost savings. Employees also experience fewer absence days, and this helps improve productivity.

Using the value-on-investment (VOI) framework instead of return on investment can give a more complete picture of wellness programs’ benefits. Here are a few ways you can use this framework:

Mental health

Mental health wellbeing services includes emotional well-being and the capacity to cope with life’s challenges. It also means the ability to make healthy choices and develop positive relationships.

People can improve their mental health by practicing good self-care, such as getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and participating in social activities. They can also seek help from a mental health professional when needed.

Emotional mental health is a human right and an essential part of overall health. Yet many countries struggle to meet the needs of people with common mental disorders, including depression and anxiety. The lack of progress reflects insufficient funding for services, conflicting priorities, and societal stigma.

Addressing mental health requires a holistic approach that includes the health sector, non-governmental organizations, and other sectors, such as education, work, transportation, housing, and justice. These determinants of mental health influence risk and protective factors at the individual, family, community, and global levels. The health sector can lead by integrating promotion and prevention activities into all sectors that interact with mental health.

Physical health

Physical health involves how your body functions and looks. It can be improved by having regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. It can also be improved by not smoking or using drugs and alcohol in risky ways.

When you have good physical health, you have enough energy to do day-to-day tasks easily without becoming too tired. Your important health numbers like blood pressure and cholesterol are within a healthy range.

Sometimes your physical wellbeing might be affected by other things such as if you have an illness or injury, pain or a health condition that affects how you think (such as PTSD or epilepsy). In these circumstances, CAMHS can offer support around anxiety and worries, guilt and anger about your diagnosis and treatment, adjustment to your condition, neuropsychological assessment and coping with family members who are affected.

Social health

Social health includes the ability to interact with others, and develop meaningful relationships. Various factors influence social wellness, including personality traits like introversion and self-esteem. Life events and chronic health conditions can also impact social connections. Fortunately, it’s possible to improve your social wellness with small consistent steps. Taking the time to nurture your relationships will result in deeper connections and a stronger sense of community.

Studies show that people who have healthy social relationships live longer and are healthier than those who do not. In this era of non-face-to-face social media, it’s important to make sure that you’re surrounded by a positive and supportive network.

One way to improve your social health is by volunteering. This is a great way to get out of the house and meet new people. Besides, volunteering can give you a sense of fulfillment and purpose. It will also help you develop a sense of empathy and gratitude. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel after doing a good deed for someone else.

Financial health

Financial health support services refers to a person’s ability to manage expenses, prepare for and recover from financial shocks, have minimal debt, and build wealth. It is an important aspect of economic security, yet most research and interventions around the social determinants of health focus on siloed solutions like food, housing, and energy.

Creating a budget and tracking spending can help people improve their financial health. People can start by separating their monthly take-home income into needs (essentials), wants, and savings. It is also helpful to keep track of bills, student loans, credit card information, and other documents related to their finances. This allows them to track their progress over time and identify areas where they can improve. Having access to affordable credit counseling and debt management programs can also be helpful. The Building Wealth and Health Network’s findings demonstrate that a consistent definition and measurement of financial health is necessary to generate holistic solutions to economic hardship that challenge discriminatory systems.
