Who Scored the Least Runs in IPL History? Ouch!

The IPL is all about big hits, massive sixes, and tons of runs! But even in this game where batters love to score, sometimes the bowlers steal the show. This article dives into the times when bowling attacks went wild, leaving batting teams with super-low scores.

RCB's Shocking 49: A Record Nobody Wants!

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) holds the record for the lowest score ever in the IPL. Back in 2017, they were bowled out for a measly 49 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It was a forgettable day for RCB, with Kolkata's bowlers, especially Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chris Woakes, taking wickets left, right, and center.

Rajasthan Royals' Double Trouble!

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have the not-so-great honor of appearing twice on this list. Their first batting disaster came in the very first IPL season in 2009. Facing RCB again (ouch!), they were bundled out for just 58 runs. This time, RCB's bowling attack, with a young Dale Steyn leading the charge, proved too strong. Fast forward to 2023, and RR had another batting nightmare, this time at home. Chasing a target of 172, their batsmen just couldn't get going, and RCB's bowlers, Mohammed Siraj, and Josh Hazlewood took full advantage, dismissing them for a mere 59 runs.

Other Teams with Low Scores

While RCB and RR top this unwanted list, a few other teams have also experienced the pain of scoring really low. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) were bowled out for a measly 66 runs by Mumbai Indians in 2017, and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) also tasted defeat with a score of just 67 runs against Delhi Daredevils in the same year.

Why Do Teams Score So Low?

There are a few reasons why a team might score low in the IPL:

  • Early Wickets: If the top batters (the first few batsmen to play) get dismissed quickly, it puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the team to score runs.
  • Bowling Magic: Sometimes, a bowler has an amazing day and takes wickets like crazy. This can make it hard for any team to score runs.
  • Pitch and Toss: The ground where the match is played and who bats first can also make a difference. If the pitch helps the bowlers swing the ball or spin it a lot, it can be tough for batsmen to score.

The Bottom Line: Cricket is Unpredictable!

These low scores in the IPL show us that even in a game where batters usually have the upper hand, bowlers can take control and have a field day. It's a reminder that cricket is a game of surprises, where both batting and bowling are important for winning!
