Amazon Large Bulky / Extra-Large (Oversize) Products: All You Need to Know

As an Amazon seller, you should know all about the platform's rules and regulations. Being aware of them saves you effort and money, especially if you sell non-standard products. On the one hand, selling such items may mean lower competition because only some sellers will risk selling them. On the other hand, selling non-standard products may mean more hassle.

Since large bulky and extra-large inventory is considered non-standard, selling it comes with its own set of challenges. This post will discuss Amazon's bulky and extra-large inventory, the different large bulky and extra-large tiers, how Amazon processes FBA these items, and the associated fees.

What Is Amazon FBA Large Bulky and Extra-Large Inventory?

Large bulky and extra-large (previously called oversize) inventory on Amazon refers to products that exceed the standard size and weight limits. Due to irregular dimensions, these products require special handling and storage.

Products that exceed standard limits set by Amazon are charged additional fees, and their shipping and fulfillment options differ from standard-sized products.

Since February 5, 2024, Amazon has made changes to oversize product size tiers and replaced them with the new large bulky and four extra-large sizes.

Amazon Large Bulky and Extra-Large Tiers

Amazon has five different size tiers for large bulky and extra-large products, ranging from “large bulky” to “extra-large 150+ lb”. Each tier has its own size and weight limits.

Breakdown of Amazon's large bulky and extra-large tiers

Large bulky

Large bulky are products larger than large standard-sized items, with a shipping weight of up to 50 pounds, the longest side of up to 59 inches, the median side of up to 33 inches, the shortest side of up to 33 inches, and a length of up to 130 inches.

Extra-large

Extra-large are products with unit weight or dimensional weight larger than 50 lbs, the longest side of over 59 inches, the median side of over 33 inches, the shortest side of over 33 inches, and a length of up to 130 inches. The extra-large tier has four sub-tiers.

  • Extra-large 0 to 50 lb — products with a shipping weight of up to 50 pounds;
  • Extra-large 50+ to 70 lb — products with a shipping weight of 50+ to 70 pounds;
  • Extra-large 70+ to 150 lb — products with a shipping weight of 70+ to 150 pounds;
  • Extra-large 150+ lb — products with a shipping weight of over 150 pounds.

How to Determine the Product Large Bulky and Extra-Large Tier?

To determine your product’s large bulky and extra-large tier, you must calculate its volume and shipping weight. Amazon calculates the volume of the product by multiplying its length, width, and height.

To identify the size tier, you must first determine the volume and dimensions of your product. Then, measure the item’s shipping weight and dimensional weight (a calculation of the volumetric weight of a package using the package’s length, width, and height). Shipping weight is the greater of unit weight or dimensional weight. Compare your values and the numbers in the table below to get the product size tier.

If your product’s volume exceeds the maximum for a particular size tier, it will be classified as the next highest tier.

Example of product size tier calculation

Product

Large yoga mat (assume dimensions: 72 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 0.5 inches thick)

Weight: 5 pounds (assumed weight)

Amazon large bulky criteria

  • Max weight: 50 lbs (our yoga mat meets this with 5 lbs)
  • Max length: 130 inches (our yoga mat is 72 inches, well within the limit)
  • Max median side: 33 inches (median side is the average of width and height. In this case, (24 inches + 0.5 inches) / 2 = 12.25 inches, which is well under 33 inches)

Dimensional weight calculation

Amazon uses a formula to calculate dimensional weight (Dim weight):

Dim weight (lbs) = (length x width x height) / divisor (139, cubic inches per pound)

For our yoga mat:

Dim weight = (72 inches x 24 inches x 0.5 inches) / 139 cubic inches/lb = 6.55 lbs (approximately)

Determining size tier

  1. Actual weight: The yoga mat weighs 5 pounds.
  2. Dimensional weight: We calculated the Dim weight to be approximately 6.55 lbs.

Amazon considers the greater of the two:

  • In this case, the dimensional weight (6.55 lbs) is greater than the actual weight (5 lbs).

Conclusion

Since the dimensional weight (6.55 lbs) is greater than 5 lbs and exceeds some of the dimensional limits for large bulky, the yoga mat might not qualify for large bulky.

Note. Dimensional weight equals the unit volume (length x width x height) divided by 139. The dimensional weight for large bulky and extra-large items assumes a minimum width and height of 2 inches.

Dimensional Weight Formula

Dimensional Weight Formula

For FBA, Amazon uses dimensional weight when it’s greater than the unit weight for small large bulky, and extra-large products (excluding 150+ pounds), to calculate fees. Fees for small standard-size products and extra-large 150+ pound units are calculated using only unit weight.

For Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF), the dimensional weight is calculated for all large bulky and extra-large items, regardless of whether the item is apparel.

How Does Amazon Process FBA Large Bulky and Extra-Large Items?

When you send a large bulky or extra-large product to an Amazon fulfillment center, large bulky and extra-large items are split from standard-size inventory into separate shipments. Large bulky and extra-large units are directed to a separate facility that handles large bulky and extra-large items.

Amazon will then measure and weigh your product to determine its size tier and charge you the appropriate fees. Amazon may also require additional handling and packaging for large bulky and extra-large items, further impacting the fulfillment cost.

What Are Amazon Large Bulky and Extra-Large FBA Fees?

Amazon large bulky and extra-large fees vary depending on the product’s size and weight tier. The fees range from $9.73/lb for large bulky products to $194.95/lb for extra-large products. They differ in dangerous and non-dangerous goods.
