World Heart Rhythm Week : Taking Fainting to Heart

5th to 11th June is being observed as World Heart Rhythm Week across the world. Every year the event is being organized by the Arrhythmia Alliance (incorporating a team of patients, charities and professionals). The week aims to raise the awareness about heart arrhythmia amongst the general public along with medical professionals. The aim of the event is to promote the effective diagnoses and treatment method of the heart arrhythmia. Every year the day is followed by a specific theme and this year the theme is “Taking Fainting to Heart”.

There is nothing called as simple faint. Fainting or syncope is very common and in certain cases it can be the basic sign of arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder). This simple symptom should not be ignored.

Some unknown facts about Arrhythmia:

  • 1 out of 2 people experience syncope at least once in their lifetime.
  • On an average about 39% of children and 30% of adults are misdiagnosed with epilepsy when they have the underlying, potentially fatal arrhythmia.
  • Sudden cardiac death is the number one killer in the world. Usually fainting is the only symptom.
  • According to the research it has been found out that 10-20% of syncope is accountable for falls which causes injury.

What is Heart Arrhythmia?

Heart Arrhythmia is a disorder affecting the rhythm of the heart beat. This disorder can affect people of any age and gender. In various cases heart arrhythmia can lead to death but if the disorder is diagnosed properly and early it can help the person to lead a healthy life.

Major types of arrhythmia are:

  • Atrial Fibrillation (AF):  Atrial Fibrillation is one of the most common types of heart arrhythmia. Under this condition the heart beats irregularly and faster than normal heart beat.
  • Supraventricular Tachycardia: under this condition the episodes of abnormally fast heart rate are at rest.
  • Bradycardia: in Bradycardia arrhythmia the heart beats more slowly as compared to the normal heartbeat rate.
  • Heart Block: in this situation the heart beats very slowly in comparison to normal heart beat and thus lead people to collapse.
  • Ventricular Fibrillation: ventricular fibrillation is a rare, rapid and disorganized heartbeat rhythm which immediately leads to loss of consciousness and thus sudden death if there is no immediate treatment provided.

Symptoms of Arrhythmia:

There are certain cases where there are no symptoms of arrhythmia as at times it can be silent. Some common symptoms of arrhythmia are mentioned below:

  • Extreme level of tiredness or fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Light- headedness
  • Near fainting spells or fainting
  • Pounding or rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the chest
  • In extreme cases, collapse and sudden cardiac arrest happens

A doctor is able to detect an irregular heartbeat with the help of a physical examination. The physical examination will include the pulse count, and for further diagnosis the doctor might refer for an ECG.

Preventive measures for Arrhythmia:

Exercising regularly is one of the best methods to prevent arrhythmia as exercising will increase our heart’s strength and stamina. The other benefit of exercising regularly is that it decreases down the chances of having any future heart issues. There are various researches going on for the effectiveness of various forms of complementary and alternative medical therapies for arrhythmia. Mentioned below are some of the complementary and alternative therapies which are very much helpful in reducing the stress. The therapies are:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Adaptation of healthier lifestyle
  • Maintaining a healthy weight because being overweight will increase the risk of developing heart diseases.

Reducing the intake caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and appetite suppressants will help in maintaining the normal and healthy heart beat.

Dr. Mitesh Sharma, Chief Cardiac Surgeon - Cardiology & CTVS,- “By making majority of people aware about arrhythmia we are helping them to highlight the importance of identifying the disorder while referring the new patients for the treatment as they might be unaware that they are walking around with a potentially debilitating or fatal arrhythmia. If you have experienced any syncope at any point in your life don’t delay and consult your doctor as soon as possible for immediate diagnosis and treatment.”
