Contribute towards helping the disabled community in Kingston

One out of ten people in a majority of countries are impaired with a disability. Disability is explained in simpler terms as a condition of the mental or physical state of mind of an individual which restricts one to perform day to day activities.

It can limit the physical movements of a person. It can even restrict the cognitive ability and mental level of a person. It can also restrict the sensory reflexes of people.

A disabled person is also known as a handicap. It can be a defect by birth, an injury or even a post-traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD.

Types of Disability-

  • A physical disability which impairs a person of the movements of the bodily muscles like the circulatory system, the nervous system, the hand body movements etc.
  • Mental disability is one which limits the cognitive process and intellectual activity of the person like learning, communication or the thought process of an individual.
  • Sensory disability affects the hearing and vision of an individual.

A disabled person is looked down upon in the society. Regardless of how we are as a human being, we will still be ignorant to this community. That is a basic human nature to which the history stands witness.

Therefore, to protect the rights of the community of disabled persons, the United Nation formulated a set of 13 proclamations declaring the rights of a disabled person.

The thought of raising up a disabled child without any external help is a worrisome task. These institutions offer special education programs, grants to fund the needs of a disabled person etc.

What we can do to help the community of the disabled:

  • Volunteer your service, your time in helping the community of the disabled. Join an NGO, an institution like a home for peculiar children or a community service program just help by offering yourself.
  • Build a communication or a network between you and a disabled person. Always be respectful in the choice of words to use and actions. Respect is one of the most important elements which help in building a relationship.
  • Raising and donating in cash or kind to provide assistance. If you are unable to give your time and service to this community, donate to it. Help build an institution or an organization for the handicap people.
  • Last but not the least point is to generate awareness to educate people about the community of disabled, and to help in overcoming the barrier of miscommunication between the two communities.

To create a prospering community, there should be harmony among the people. This ensures that the society as a whole can be a move towards the heights of success.
