DON T MISS: Apple s iPhone 7 will probably smash existing sales recordsBy itself, Alexa can perform a bunch of tasks that you expect from virtual assistants. They can also create custom skills with ASK by designing their voice UI and simply building cloud-hosted code that interacts with Alexa cloud-based APIs to process customer requests.Voice helps make the interaction more accessible and intuitive, and provides us with a new way to engage existing and new customers.SmartThings, an open platform for the smart home, is using ASK and the Smart Home Skill API to offer customers voice-activated control of their home.Offering customers the ability to control devices connected to the Samsung SmartThings platform with their voice was a natural next step, said Brett Worthington, General Manager for Americas and Vice President of Global Business Development, SmartThings. The company is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking.
Don t freak out, though, because Google lets you hear and delete these recordings.Head over to Google s Voice and Audio Activity page and start deleting all those recordings. You can delete them individually or all at once, just click the More Delete Options Advanced to get there. While you re shoring up privacy settings, you can also tell Google to stop tracking which web pages you visit here, or turn off everything from a map of stored locations to YouTube watch history on this page. While voice recordings can be paused, they ll be reactivated the next time you use Virtual Assistant, Voice Search, or say OK Google. That said, having the recordings available for users to listen to is markedly more transparent than similar services like Siri which stores your data for up to two years, unless you turn off the service or Amazon Echo which may or may not be wiretapped by the FBI .
When you're launching a business, certainly one way you hope to catch on with customers is through word of mouth.According to a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, it's a feeling of ownership that makes a difference in what we decide send out into the world.Through a series of experiments, Zoey Chen, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Miami, and Jonah Berger, an associate professor of marketing at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, found that people were more likely to share a piece of content if they found it themselves, rather than if someone else sent it to them."The act of finding causes people to associate the content with the self. And since people tend to have high self-esteem, and thus feel an elevated sense of certainty and trust for self-associated things, they are less likely to deeply process found content," the authors explained."People are more willing to share an interesting article than a boring one when they received those articles, for example, but this difference attenuates and in some cases, disappears when they feel like they found those articles themselves, Chen and Berger wrote.
Third-party developers are rushing to capitalize on Amazon's efforts to make it easy for them to tap into its cloud-based Alexa Voice Service.Alexa is one of the most powerful virtual assistants available, with Amazon saying Friday that the Alexa platform has surpassed 1000 skills. With a variety of features ranging from hailing an Uber to ordering a pizza from Domino s, it seems like Amazon is preparing to defend its turf ahead of the pending release of Google Home and Apple s rumored Echo-like device. While there are rumors that Apple will open up Siri to third-party developers ahead of a shipping an Echo-like product of its own, and Siri, Cortana, and Google Now all have at least limited third-party support, Amazon in unique in the way it has opened Alexa to rapid third-party development without subjecting those developers to heavy oversight. There s even a third-party device called the Triby with Alexa smarts, which we reviewed last month. We re excited about the 1000 skills that are already available, and can t wait to see what developers create with the next ten thousand, Amazon s Alexa director Rob Pulciani says.
They had a floor-standing machine that I stood in while shiny chrome sliding bars tickled the four extremities of my sole.Code 94s in size nine-and-a-half, the shop assistant barks into his walkie-talkie, bored with my reminiscing, then simply walks away.I ask him why there are three shoe stockrooms at the extremities of the building when the footwear section of the shop is in one place. How I manage to walk down a hallway without getting my massive, skate-sized feet wedged between the walls is a miracle.Despite having a nationwide presence, owning several major brands and itself close to becoming a household name, this retailer has managed to push 16 years into the millennium apparently without any kind of computerised shop-floor stock management whatsoever. He bewails the state of high street footwear retailers and complains about the poor quality and lack of comfort of the shoes he buys, yet he s too mean to spend money going to a proper shop for a decent pair.
While Musk's description of an injectable human-computer link may sound like science fiction, top tech executives repeatedly said that artificial intelligence AI was on the verge of changing everyday life, during discussion at a conference by online publication Recode this week.Google first started applying the technology through "deep neural networks" to voice recognition software about three to four years ago and is ahead of rivals such as Amazon.com Inc, Apple Inc and Microsoft Corp in machine learning, Pichai said.Microsoft, for instance, apologized and went back to the lab after an AI chatbot talking on Twitter "learned" to make racist comments."It's really early but I think we're on the edge of a golden era.Amazon has been working on artificial intelligence for at least four years and now has 1,000 employees working on Alexa, the company's voice-based smart assistant software system, he said. But it was the comments by Tesla's Musk, on how he would potentially develop the technology to implant humans with technology to augment brains, that captured the imagination of attendees, according to Adam Burrows, senior vice president of emerging businesses at HomeAdvisor, a unit of IAC/Interactive Corp."It got people thinking on a philosophical level and away from what Google or Tesla will come out with next year," he said.

Out of all the wild ideas to change how we compute, voice control has the most promise.Mary Meeker, a well-respected analyst at the VC firm KPCB, released her annual "State of the Web" report this week, where she discusses how close we are to a shift in computing more with our voice, especially in the home or car.Not convinced? This will change your mind.First, here's how human interaction with computers has evolved over the years. Now we have the Amazon Echo, a screen-less computer that can mimic a lot of smartphone functions, all controlled with your voice.Apple is thinking about letting third parties integrate with Siri too, which we could see as soon as this summer, according to The Information. Why is this a big deal?Voice is often so much easier than unlocking your phone, launching an app, and tapping around to find the thing you want.If you've ever used an Echo, you know exactly what I'm talking about.Phones won't go away, but for many tasks, just saying what you want to happen out loud to an intelligent digital assistant will be a better experience. But there are still some challenges. Most digital assistants today aren't smart or accurate enough to complete tasks 100% of the time.More from Tech Insider:China is building the world's highest and longest glass bridge — and it will have giant swings and a bungee jumpHarambe the gorilla's tragic death is raising critical questions about the nature of zoosThis man has an incredible bionic arm that comes with a drone and a flashlightThese are the most misspelled words in each state, according to GoogleElon Musk just explained how Tesla's future really comes down to its battery technologyNOW WATCH: How to control your iPhone by just talking to itLoading video...

Tim Cook addresses delegates at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in 2014Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference WWDC kicks off in less than two weeks' time.iOS 10The next version of Apple's operating system for iPhones and iPads is sure to be previewed ahead of a rollout alongside the iPhone 7 in September, with MacWorld picking up what we are likely to see.According to the site, major features to be introduced within iOS 10 include the ability to hide and remove pre-installed apps, something fans have wanted for some time, and possibly a new built-in Apple app called "Home", which would act as a centralised hub for HomeKit-enabled appliances and fixtures.Elsewhere, the site says Apple could be working on a new Siri-based voicemail system, which would see the virtual assistant explain to a caller why you can't answer and then transcribe any voice message into text.Siri integration could be one of them: previously leaked screenshots suggest Apple could be working on bringing a Siri app to its Mac and MacBook line-up, which MacRumors presumes will "be able to perform all of the same functions available on iOS, such as opening apps, playing music, and answering queries".Trusted Reviews cites rumours that the next device could be between 20 to 40 per cent thinner, alongside separate whispers that it will get a FaceTime camera and more when not paired to an iPhone.
Google, Microsoft and Facebook have all made their own AI APIs open source in recent months, while IBM has opened Watson pictured above for business and Amazon has purchased AI startup Orbeus."These hugely powerful tools, used, developed and backed by the world's most advanced technology companies, are now available to anyone with the skills to use them," says Matt Jones, Senior Analytics Project Manager at analytics and data science company Tessella.Part of Google since January 2014, DeepMind's AlphaGo neural network beat mankind at the ancient Chinese game of Go recently. The Facebook M virtual assistant will follow."IBM Watson, Google DeepMind and the like are incredibly high-power cognitive platforms that are enabling developers to do really interesting projects," says Frank Palermo, Executive Vice President of Global Digital Solutions at global IT services company VirtusaPolaris.Essentially, it's about getting software to alter its behaviour in a dynamic environment in order to get a reward you can't give Siri a biscuit every time she 'found this on the web' .
This includes items that already show up, such as regular text messages and missed call alerts, as well as notifications from other messaging apps WhatsApp, Line, Telegram, etc.Microsoft says it s also working on muting notifications on a per-app basis, but that functionality is not ready yet.Otherwise, the new features are expected to roll out as part of the Anniversary Update this summer.Cortana shares photosThere s also a nifty little feature that lets you send photos from your phone to your PC via Cortana.Cortana s new listening animation looks more like a miniature audio waveform. On top of the new features, this build adds a ton of fixes for strange quirks like incorrect battery percentage estimates, misbehaving Glance screen clocks, and improvements to Cortana s reliability—let s hope that means the digital personal assistant is becoming less crash happy.
The intentions are good, we suppose: Brown University researchers have published a Javascript library that lets a standard Webcam track eye movements. The designers explain that they've created a self-calibrating eye-tracking model that trains a mapping between the features of the eye and positions on the screen.Rather than trying to send video back to a server, the WebGazer.js library runs entirely in the client browser, and it runs only if the user consents in giving access to their webcam .That consent, having read the documentation, might include giving access to local storage if the WebGazer operator wants to store data between sessions. The key bits of the software are a tracker module, which controls how eyes are detected , and the regression module, which handles learning and predictions. The Brown University boffins that developed it PhD candidate Alexandra Papoutsaki, assistant professor Jeff Huang and undergrad James Laskey collaborated with Georgia Tech associate professor James Hayes.
That question has become one of the most popular salutations over the past few weeks among mainland Chinese social-media users, especially white-collar workers in the country s urban cities.Users of Fenda, which translates to one-minute answers in Chinese, are encouraged to make some money by either asking or answering questions.Among those who have joined Fenda are popular artists in the entertainment industry, online celebrities, high-profile businessmen and even scions of mainland China s largest companies.More than 18,000 people have paid one yuan each to hear Wang s answer: I can afford any commodity that can be bought and sold in the market, but … there are still things that money cannot buy, like love, freedom and dignity. As a Chinese, I would think twice before spending money on goods which are too luxurious or might cause public anger.Wu Yunfei, the assistant to Zaihang.com chief executive Ji Shisan, declined to provide the total number of registered users on Fenda.
On slide 133 of her much-anticipated annual Internet Trends report, venture capitalist Mary Meeker made a curious comparison. She put a graph of iPhone sales side-by-side with a sales estimate for the Echo, the newish wireless speaker and voice-activated personal assistant from Amazon.Sales of the iPhone have been slowing, and according to Meeker s projections, they ll go into decline by the end of 2016.By 2020, according to Andrew Ng—chief scientist at Chinese Internet company Baidu, who Meeker cites in her report—at least 50 percent of all searches will make use of images or speech.Meanwhile, she said as of last month, 20 percent of searches on Android smartphones were voice-based.If Meeker and Bezos are right, we ll all be spending a lot more time talking to our computers soon enough.
Apple doesn t typically show off new devices at WWDC, but that doesn t make it any less exciting. In other words, you should be able to talk to Siri as if she were a person — not a digital assistant powered by artificial intelligence. There s also a rumor it could include a facial-recognition camera.Read more here:Mac OS and new MacBooksApple s operating system for computers has been called OS X for years, but now it may be renamed as Mac OS.Reports claim Apple could be set to bring a newly revamped MacBook Pro to the table by the end of this year, with whispers that it will be lighter and thinner, will feature a new OLED touch bar above the keyboard itself, and will even support the Touch ID fingerprint security system into its design.Assuming that the rumors are true, Apple will reveal the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch 2 during a huge event in September, and a new MacBook is on the way too, so we fully expect to see some interesting new software come out of WWDC 2016.
As the weather warms and I switch from jeans to my traditional summer muumuu, I always worry that my phone might slip loose from those billowing floral pockets and go astray. Now you can use the page to find your phone if it goes missing, and you ll soon be able to just Google I lost my phone to access the feature.Previously you would have needed to use the Android Device Manager to locate or remotely wipe your lost device. You can now use images as search terms and select the exact text you want it to search for handy if you want to use it as a system-wide dictionary .Apple is expected to show the latest versions of their software, including a Siri SDK to open the virtual assistant to third-party integrations.About a month ago the dates were accidentally?
