Google has flicked the switch on the Australian version of YouTube Red , the twelve bucks a month version of the service that features no ads and allows online viewing. If you pony up you also get access to a clutch of YouTube Originals that extend the output of popular YouTubers and look to be aimed squarely at the youth market.Google also throws in a subscription to its streaming music service and folks who already pay for that get YouTube Red gratis.YouTube ads are an endurable irritant and the Originals are not likely to excite many: your correspondent's 14-year-old progeny thinks YouTube-spawned comedian PewDiePie is old hat, while my 11-year-old's ardour is fading. But Vulture South's team cannot imagine that YouTube Red will scare Australia's incumbent paid video providers Foxtel, Stan and Netflix, or make telcos Optus and Telstra feel like their strategies are weak.Sponsored: Make your system highly available and recoverable using PureApplication system
The updated app was quietly pushed live yesterday, and Google has now officially confirmed that Android Pay is available for anyone in the U.K., assuming they have a compatible NFC-enabled device.Similar to Apple Pay, Android Pay lets users purchase goods in physical retail stores by associating their MasterCard or Visa card with their device and swiping their phone against a contactless terminal at the point of sale.It can also be used to pay for things within third-party apps, including those by JD Sports, Deliveroo, Zara, Kickstarter, Airbnb, and YPlan.Crucially, Android Pay can also be used on London s public transport network, including the Tube and buses. The Internet giant launched its Apple Pay competitor last May, but so far, the feature has only been available in the U.S. Google did confirm back in March, however, that Android Pay would be landing in the U.K. some time in the next few months. The company has now confirmed that it will be launching in Australia and Singapore soon, with more countries added to the mix in the coming months. So it sounds as though the U.K. is serving as the launchpad for a major global rollout across 2016.Google had previously confirmed that eight banks would be on board for launch — Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M Bank, MBNA, and Nationwide Building Society, though it did note that more would be added.Barclays was also slow to embrace Apple Pay, which has been available in the U.K. since last summer.
MaaS Australia, founded by investors in MaaS Finland, is on board to take the concept to a country very different from Finland. One click would pay for it all and you could choose based on price, time, possibly a preferred route, or maybe even sights and scenes along the way.The monthly commuter package would include all your travel that month, whether by car, bus, taxi or other mode of transportation. As a bonus, this package would cover home grocery order deliveries, too.The economic models for consumers show that most people would save money by only using cars when they need them, along with other transportation services, rather than paying the costs of ownership. It ll be a big change from the long-standing love affair Americans and people in many other countries have had with their cars, and it won t change overnight.
MoreFILE - In this May 28, 2015, file photo, a Google employee gives a demonstration of Android Pay on a phone at Google I/O 2015 in San Francisco.Consumers in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to add stores' loyalty programs to Android Pay to earn rewards. In addition, consumers will be able to use Android Pay when shopping on mobile Web browsers.Separately on Wednesday, a competing payments service from Samsung added loyalty programs. But Apple and Android Pay work only with stores that have newer wireless readers called NFC.Apple Pay is also in China, Canada, Australia and Singapore, with Hong Kong and Spain to come.
Android Pay is also making its first big international push, with the payments platform launching in the UK Wednesday and coming to Singapore and Australia "soon."The mobile payment system, which Google first unveiled a year ago, is also getting support for contactless payments on public transit, with support for Transport London, which includes busses and trains.Android Pay's biggest competitor, Apple Pay, has been rapidly expanding across banks and the globe, coming to Singapore, Australia and China since the beginning of the year. But with Google's latest announcement, it looks like Android Pay isn't far behind. At launch, Android Pay was supported by more than 700,000 stores in the U.S. Now, it will also be compatible with all electronic, contactless payment systems in the UK including in Starbucks, Waitrose and public transportation stations, provided you have a card from one of the supported banks.Android Pay in the UK is now supported by Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society and Google says more banks will add support soon.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also licensing the Nokia name for handsets back to Nokia, which has set up a new company that will make feature phones, Android-based smartphones, and tablets. Now, Microsoft claims it is not giving up the ghost entirely, even though it is enabling yet another competitor in the smartphone business. There was no bold vision or explanation of where Microsoft plans to go next in terms of mobile platforms and devices.Plus, Alcatel has actually been acquired by Nokia .What s more, the deal is not likely to reassure app developers, handset manufacturers, or consumers that Microsoft is in the smartphone game for the long haul.At this point, walking away is probably the best thing Microsoft can do.During its second quarter earnings report in January, Microsoft reported that it had sold 4.5 million Lumia devices, down from 10.5 million for the same period a year earlier. In the five years since Microsoft first gave us the Windows phone, the news has been bleak:And in the Kantar market share report for the three months ending in February, Windows Mobile was bleeding market share just about everywhere: down from 4.8 percent in 2015 to 2.6 percent in 2016 in the U.S; down from 9.1 percent in 2015 to 5.8 percent in 2016 in Australia; and down 10.1 percent to 5.9 percent in Europe s five biggest countries.Meanwhile, Windows Mobile was stuck at .9 percent in China, practically irrelevant.Microsoft has been focusing on services and applications that run across mobile platforms lately. This is probably its best hope for maintaining a foothold in the mobile platform game going forward. No doubt, it s a bitter moment for a company that once had such a lock on personal computing — thanks to its Windows desktop monopoly. But the mobile wars have long since become Apple s iOS versus Google s Android.Microsoft can only really move on by admitting that hard truth to itself.

The government is yet to make a move to legalise the service in cities like Melbourne, and now the courts have weighed in, seemingly legalising the service. On Wednesday, Melbourne driver Nathan Brenner won an appeal against a A$900 fine he was issued for driving UberX without accreditation, ABC News reported.Brenner was initially fined in December in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, and was also required to pay the prosecution costs of the Victorian Taxi Commission. The Commission has been contacted for comment. She said the government needed more time to consider the court's findings. On the other hand, Matt Denman, general manager of Uber Victoria, welcomed the news but stopped short of declaring the service effectively legalised.
Photo: SCMP PicturesAustralian scientists have found evidence of a huge asteroid they say slammed into Earth some 3.46 billion years ago – making it the second oldest known to have hit the planet and larger than the one blamed for wiping out the dinosaurs.Andrew Glikson, from the Australian National University s Planetary Institute, said that while the asteroid would have been massive, the exact location of where it hit was not known. The impact would have triggered earthquakes orders of magnitude greater than terrestrial earthquakes, it would have caused huge tsunamis and would have made cliffs crumble, he said in a statement. On Wednesday, Glikson said he and Arthur Hickman from the Geological Survey of Western Australia had found tiny glass beads called spherules, which are formed by vaporised material from an asteroid s impact, in Australia s remote northwest. It dates from 3.46 billion years ago.Tests on the beads found in Western Australia found levels of elements such as platinum, nickel and chromium corresponding with those found in asteroids, according to the scientists paper in Precambrian Research.
Machines, after all, can perform many manufacturing tasks more efficiently, effectively and consistently than humans, leading to increased output, better quality and less waste.SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg via Getty Images Of the more than 229,000 industrial robots sold in 2014 the most recent statistics available , more than 57,000 were sold to Chinese manufacturers, 29,300 to Japanese companies, 26,200 to companies in the U.S., 24,700 to South Koreans and more than 20,000 to German companies. The basic economic trade-off between the cost of labor and the cost of automation is the primary consideration.AP Photo/Kin Cheung Other countries that have been rapidly integrating robotics into manufacturing, but not quite as quickly, are Canada, China, Japan, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. China is an interesting case because it s automating rapidly despite the fact that Chinese wages are still comparatively low.Countries moving more slowly in the adoption of industrial robotics include Australia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Mexico and Poland.German Chancellor Angela Merkel shakes hands with a robot at an industrial fair in 2006 alongside Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Anyone with an Android device running KitKat 4.4 and above will be able to make payments if their phone has NFC.The system will work with all existing contactless payment points, including those on the London's transport network.Details of the payment system's UK launch were partially leaked by a coffee shop last week. One London-based branch of Pret a Manger started displaying adverts for the contactless method alongside its card machines, saying that users Android users could pay with their phones.Android Pay debuted in the US in September, with Australia set to be next following its UK launch. It was immediately supported by almost all major UK banks, with the exception of Barclays, which launched its own bPay alternative.

A tradition founded in 2008, the Google IO is an annual software development conference held in San Francisco, California where each year, the multinational company behind Android, Chrome and the famous search engine casts lose its magic casket full of plans for the upcoming year. This year, the Google IO is to be held on the fateful day of May 18, and as I sit just 30 minutes away from its scheduled commencement, here are my best predictions on what to expect from IO 2016 this year. And indeed, tech s biggest giant will be sure to scoop in on the action as it announces some of its biggest plans with virtual reality this upcoming year.Wearable AndroidsEver since it was first announced two years ago in yet another IO Conference, Android Wear has taken the slow way, much to the annoyance of excited fanfare.People are even saying that Android Wear is becoming stagnant, which is why Google has scheduled a section of the Conference titled: What s new in Android Wear .Check out this cool infographic on Australia s political climate based entirely on Google Search Results.
Every month brings the same news -- that month was the new 'hottest' month on record, edging past the previous month to paint a dire picture for the planet's climate.Soon enough, the record-breaking had formed a trend, and now NOAA has confirmed the news: we ve officially had a year-long streak of record-breaking warm weather. Before last month, the previous hottest April on record was April 2010, which was only 0.28 Celsius above average.Of all the continents on Earth, April s overall temperature fell into the top nine recorded, at the minimum. The month was particularly hard on South America, Africa, and Asia, where record temps for the month were recorded.Southern Europe also experienced especially warmer temps, as did eastern Australia, southern Alaska, and central Africa, among other places.
1.5MW will be available when the facility reaches practical completion … towards the end of the second half of FY17.The fair suburb of Fortitude Valley will house the facility, which is handily adjacent to the central business district, an electricity substation and lots of lovely telco kit.The Melbourne facility will kick off with 2MW of capacity but will have capacity for 25MW when finished.Practical completion , which understand means operations can commence in some halls even if others are still full of builders, is slated for the second half of 2017.NextDC is thought to host Azure Australia and known to host some of CenturyLink's antipodean presence. The launches are accompanied by predictable mutterings from the company and politicians about job-creation and Australia's colossal appetite for all things cloudy, digital and secure.
With a prism divided sunlight into four frequencies, which means that solar energy can be utilized in a better way. Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia have developed a new type of solar cells in which a prism splits sunlight into four frequencies converted into electricity in a so-called tandem cell with four layers. The solar cell has an area of 28 square centimeters and efficiency is reported to be 34.5 percent, which is said to be the world record for non-concentrated solar radiation, writes the University. The new record is said to be 44 percent better than the previous record which Alta Devices in the US reached 24 percent with a 800 square centimeter large solar cell. The new record holders believe, however, that it will be long before their new solar cell will appear on ordinary rooftops. But the technology is said to be excellent for use in power plants where high towers with mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight to the solar cells.
