Bethesda Softworks via AP Before there was "Halo" or "Call of Duty," the first-person shooter video games "Wolfenstein" and "Doom" defined the trigger-happy genre in three dimensions. This is a game about shooting everything that moves until everything doesn't move. There's the rocket launcher, super shotgun, chainsaw and — of course — the BFG.It's not any more monotonous than repeatedly shooting zombified hordes in the head. The game's levels are well laid out and filled with fun secrets to discover between firefights. This revamped installment definitely captures the frenzied, bloodthirsty spirit of what made id Software's original "Doom" and "Doom II" hallmarks of the genre.

Unfortunately, where Fallout 4 is concerned, familiarity has become part of its lasting legacy.A meant-to-be-emotionally-charged offhand reference to the son I ignored for close to 40 hours and eventually shot in the main game aside, the breadcrumb trail to the expansion's island setting and its slow, gloomy boat-ride reveal is genuinely refreshing. The town's opposing faction – the returning nut-case cult the Children of Atom – fare better and the brief supernatural elements complement the island's foggy, ghoulish aesthetic. The religious group's home, a derelict submarine called The Nucleus, houses a few sympathetic residents, casting the band of misfits as more than simple indoctrinated weirdos.Aside from a notable excursion into possibly the best Fallout vault ever no really, it's almost worth the cost price alone and a few notable loot drops, there really is little to recommend about Far Harbor and that's without even dwelling on the unforgivably bad frame-rate on console when you catch even a slight glimpse of whispy fog, or the aggressively boring 'virtual reality' Minecraft-meets-tower-defence puzzle section at the mid-way point. It's more Fallout 4 for those in desperate need of further adventures in the wasteland and completing the multitude of fetch-this/kill-that side-quests brings the total run-time to at least the 10 hour mark, but the Far Harbor expansion exists as a disappointing microcosm of the core failings of its parent game, where shallow storytelling, graphical glitches and formulaic design top a list of 'it's good if you can ignore' caveats that's now too lengthy to forgive.
One turns certain characters into Thomas the Tank Engine on the PC version of Fallout 4 a mod replaced dragons with Thomas in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim .The mods, however, are probably even more crucial to maintaining Fallout 4 s place on Steam s most-played list, where it is usually in the top 10 with perennial hits like Civilization V, Ark: Survival Evolved, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.Consoles have previously seen player-created content, but that is typically built with in-game tools and rarely do they fiddle with a game s code in the same way that a mod does.Bethesda already brought official mod support to Fallout 4 in a beta update, and it works by installing them through an easy-to-use menu built into the game.Community developers can submit their mods to the publisher, and all approved add-ons will go up on Bethesda s mods page.It s likely that most of the mods you find here will work on Xbox One because Bethesda isn t letting in copyrighted materials on its official channel, but you can still get stuff like modern firearms, better scopes, and craftable cats … which I m going to install right now!To get Xbox One s Fallout 4 fans excited about mod support, Microsoft highlighted some of the best creations that ll work on day one. These include Snap n Build, Alien Assault Rifle, and Conquest.
Gamers can start installing this game-altering content immediately by loading up the Mods option inside of Fallout 4.Bethesda is bringing mods to console in an effort to extend the life of its games. The publisher has seen the benefit of mods for years.Games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 were still among the most-played releases on the Steam PC distribution platform for years after their debuts thanks to community add-on support. You can find all of the supported Xbox One mods on mods.bethesda.net and filtering by platform. Here you ll find content like an ownable RV home inside of Diamond City, rainy-only weather, and campsites.Since these mods are going through an official Bethesda submission process, you will not see the kinds of community creations that bring in copyrighted or other protected materials. For example, here s an unofficial mod for Fallout 4 on PC that turns one of the most frightening enemies into the wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage:So console gamers — Fallout 4 mods come to PlayStation 4 as well next month — are still going to miss out on some of the silliest, most entertaining mods.
I guess y all wanted some mods on your consoles after all.Fallout 4 publisher Bethesda revealed today that the launch of mods on Xbox One had 50 times more traffic than the initial launch on PC.That enabled it to make its own Bethesda.net portal, where community developers can submit their creations and where players can get mods for their Xbox One or PC copy of Fallout 4.This looks like a strong launch for mods on console, and it suggests that those players were dying for this kind of control over their games.Mods enable Fallout 4 fans to change the kinds of weapons they get, the kinds of houses they can own, and the look of their character models. With 50 times more traffic for the official mods channel, Xbox One owners are showing how much demand exists for this content.PlayStation 4 owners will get their own chance to do the same some time later this month when the feature goes live on that platform.Of course, one of the major reasons that the official Bethesda Mods channel had more traffic from Xbox One than PC is that most players on Windows already install mods manually. The benefits of this are that they can use mods featuring copyrighted material that Bethesda, Sony, and Microsoft couldn t approve for their distribution networks.

You couldn t shoot portals in every direction, but they existed, and the game played around heavily with spiritual themes, graphic violence, and sudden shifts in gravity. And each time he does so, his right eyeball seems to grow an increasingly disturbing red color.Super powers aren t anything new to the franchise, and Colantonio said players are expected to use their wits, weapons, and abilities to survive.Prey 2 then looked nothing like the original, but its science fiction universe, gritty tones, and mercenary concept caught the hearts of many gamers. So when development got shaky and the ammunition seemed to have run out for the development team, it was with disappointment, not surprise, that fans heard it had been cancelled.Perhaps it makes sense for Arkane Studios to start over from scratch and reimagine the series in order to keep it alive.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show is happening this week, and most gaming publishers are taking this time to show off their newest products at one of the industry s most high-profile events.Next is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim publisher Bethesda. The company will have Dishonored 2, something from The Elder Scrolls, and we re betting a few surprises.Check out the video below to see the entire event for yourself.
Prey returns from the dead.Bethesda revealed the new game, just called Prey, during its showcase tonight ahead of the high-profile Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, showing that the sci-fi first-person shooter series is alive again after the publisher canceled Prey 2 in 2014.It will be out next year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.Prey 2 was originally shown at the 2011 event. It excited attendees including me for showing an open, sci-fi city with gameplay that focused on bounty-hunting.It had a Blade Runner feel to it.It stood out from the original Prey released in 2006 , which was a more linear, straightforward shooter. After a period of silence about its development, Kotaku reported in 2013 that Prey 2 was canceled before Bethesda confirmed it in 2014.The new Prey takes place on a space station that s been attacked by aliens. It was announced more than 10 years before it was released.
Skyrim racked up more than 20 million copies in sales since its original release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, making this role-playing game one of the 10 best-selling games of all time as of 2014.Skyrim focuses on the exploits of the Dragonborn, a hero who journeys through the northern regions of Tamriel to stop the draconic threat. The Elder Scrolls games are open-world romps that feature a great deal of character customization — players do not find themselves committing to one type of character and can instead mix-and-match many different abilities, like swordplay and magic. It has been five years since Skyrim debuted, and that game came out five years after its predecessor, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2006, four years after The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind which hardcore fans had been hoping would receive a remaster this year .This isn t the only Elder Scrolls game in the mix.Last E3, Bethesda announced a digital card game set in Tamriel, and the publisher also has a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which debuted in 2014.Another Bethesda series, Fallout, has also seen some long development times between sequels.Fallout 3 debuted in 2008, and Fallout 4 rolled out seven years later.Fallout: New Vegas hit in 2010, but that was an offshoot that Obsidian Entertainment developed for Bethesda.Update 8:25 p.m. Pacific: Special Edition is free is you own the Legendary edition on Steam.
Bethesda revealed it is updating Skyrim, unleashing new content for Fallout 4, and making a new Prey, but it hasn t forgotten about its mobile efforts.Fallout Shelter is getting a new update on mobile, and it is also coming to PC.These quests enable your characters and their dogs to bring back important items that will help your vault grow. The update is coming in July. While quests are a major addition, the PC version should also help the game find even more players. Its free-to-play nature means that it s ideal for quick play sessions, but that s not something people only do on their smartphones.Plenty of people spend hours on their Windows machines — and many of them do so to play Fallout 4 or Skyrim. Now, they can take breaks with Fallout Shelter between doing missions in those full role-playing adventures.
Wasteland heroes in Fallout 4 will have new adventures to go on in the coming months. At its press conference today for the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show, Bethesda Games Studio showed new downloadable content DLC for its popular role-playing game. After briefly recapping the success of Fallout 4 the developer shipped more than 12 million copies during the 2015 holiday season , creative director Todd Howard teased a new area that players can explore in the Commonwealth with a short video clip.In August 2016, Bethesda will release a new expansion featuring Nuka World, a theme park based on the ubiquitous soda pop brand found in the game.Howard didn t reveal anything more about the update. In the meantime, fans can get their hands on the Contraptions Workshop DLC next week, which will allow them to build Rube Goldberg-style machines. And in July, players can make their own underground homes and conduct strange experiments on their vault dwellers with the Vault-Tec Workshop add-on.You can see Howard s message and the Fallout 4 updates below:
Bethesda Softworks marketing chief Pete Hines announced today that Fallout 4 will debut on the HTC Vive virtual reality headset in 2017.The company made the announcement at its press and fan event tonight ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the big game trade show this week in Los Angeles. And at the event, Hines said that Bethesda is also showing both Doom and Fallout 4 in VR in demos at the show.Hines made no announcement about whether Doom would be released on VR headsets. This HTC Vive announcement is big, as Fallout 4 was Bethesda s most popular game ever with more than 12 million copies sold at last count. The move is a major endorsement for VR, which is a fledgling platform.
Maybe The Elder Scrolls Online isn t such a bomb after all.Bethesda announced today during its Electronic Entertainment Expo show today that its online role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls online, has over 7 million players. It didn t specify if this was active players or just representative of copies sold or accounts made, but it s an impressive number either way.The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.The game is also removing level restrictions that used to keep players out of certain areas. Now, players can access any part of The Elder Scrolls Online after they finish its tutorial.Bethesda also announced that the online game is coming out this June in Japan. The Elder Scrolls Online had a rocky launch, with fans complaining that it felt closed off and simpler than the single player releases in the series.Bethesda has won back support by releasing new content and adding features. It also ditched monthly subscriptions.
Players can take on the role of either Corvo Attano, the hero of the first Dishonored, or Emily Kaldwin, the princess from the first. But Emily and Corvo will both take advantage of a number of mystical abilities to frighten, confuse, and harm their enemies in creative ways.Creativity is rewarded, and the developer built it in a way that ll make you realize your way — which is likely different from everyone else s — is the right way for you. This sequel also takes players to a new southern island that drops the industrial feeling of the original in favor of something that looks more Mediterranean. The developer said it wanted to make something that feels like a painting come to life brimming with spaces to explore. If you look closely, you ll learn about the world by walking through these environments.Arkane built a new visual engine — called the Void Engine — that enables it to build spaces covered in shadows that can give way to bright, beautfiul openings, like a market.
Id Software promised it's fast and upholds their legacy of technical excellence, specifically making mention of 120Hz refresh and unlocked frame rate support, but we won't see the game again until QuakeCon later this summer.Unsurprisingly, it's mostly settlement stuff. We saw a brief trailer of an alien-infested space station and a man whose eyes get increasingly red with each new day.Must be hard to get allergy meds in the future.Jokes aside, it's cool to see Prey 2 finally coming.Things started slow, with one of those "slow camera pans across random environments" highlight reels, but the presentation closed with a lengthy "Dust District" mission demo that saw Emily clambering up walls, trudging through a dust storm to take guards out stealthily, and...switching off windmills?
Like other contemporary shooters Overwatch for one , Quake Champions is being pitched as an e-sports game, with promises of tournament support from the publisher.Little else was revealed about Quake Champions, including platforms PC is a given , but there was a CG teaser trailer, complete with a glimpse of character classes and explosive battles in a large arena. You awaken aboard the Talos 1 in the year 2032 and must uncover the secrets hiding in the depths of the space station while being hunted by the mysterious alien force that has taken over.Perhaps the most surprising announcement of the show was that Bethesda has opened a new division of the studio devoted to making VR games. Finally, there was more news on Dishonored 2, which was unveiled at last year's E3.The game stars two characters: returning protagonist Corvo Attano, and the prior game's royal daughter Emily Kaldwin.
