Google s two popular operating systems, Android and Chrome OS, soon will run the same apps.On Thursday, Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., GOOGL -0.90 % said the Google Play app store will soon be able to install Android apps on Chromebook laptops as well as on the lesser-known Chromebase all-in-one computers, Chromebox desktops and computer-in-a-stick Chromebits.Rather than push for more Web apps, Google decided to add Android app compatibility. You ll be able to download and use Android apps, so you can make a Skype call, work with Office files and be productive offline—or take a break with games such as Minecraft, Hearthstone or Clash of Clans, Reid and Taylor wrote in the post. The same apps that run on phones and tablets can now run on Chromebooks without compromising their speed, simplicity or security. This move doesn t mean all Android apps will suddenly look great and work well on a laptop with a trackpad and no touch screen, for instance.
That means that Chromebooks will soon be able to run most of the 1.5 million Android apps out there. The functionality will launch with three new Chromebooks this summer, with additional devices getting the functionality in the fall. This move brings a lot more functionality to Google's laptops.Demos on stage show how easy it will be to do something like edit a photo in Adobe's Photoshop app with a bigger screen or have more control while playing a previously Android-only game like Clash of Clans."You can write your term paper and get your Snapchats all on the same device without ever having to take your phone out of your pocket," a Chrome product manager said on stage.NOW WATCH: Bumble founder: Men should stop putting these 4 things in their profilesLoading video...

Last fall, Chinese online-game developer Giant Interactive Group teamed up with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. BABA 0.60 % and held talks with SoftBank and Supercell over an acquisition, people familiar with the matter said.Tencent, Supercell, SoftBank, Alibaba and Giant declined to comment. The company s mobile games are free to download, and Supercell makes money by selling virtual goods that enhance the players game experiences.Last year, it bought minority stakes in U.S. mobile-game publishers Glu Mobile Inc. and Pocket Gems Inc. Tencent has been assembling a war chest for potential acquisitions and is raising about $4 billion for a bank loan, people familiar with the matter said earlier this month.SoftBank s portfolio of video-game companies is one area that is under scrutiny from company President Nikesh Arora, who in March was put in charge of its international investments and operations, a person familiar with the matter said.Any sale of such assets would help shore up SoftBank s balance sheet, which is saddled with more than $80 billion in net interest-bearing debt, about a third of which is tied to its struggling U.S. mobile carrier unit Sprint Corp.—--Alexander Martin in Tokyo and Matthias Verbergt in Stockholm contributed to this article.
Supercell is a well-known name even in Tencent s home market; its Clash Royale was the only foreign-published title among the 10 top-grossing mobile games in China last month, according to research firm Newzoo.Supercell would push Tencent deeper into the fast-growing mobile segment, which now accounts for only a bit more than a third of its gaming revenue, the rest coming from desktop franchises in China.Supercell and King—maker of Candy Crush Saga —were similar last year in revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. And mobile-game sector is vulnerable to one-hit wonders. It recently raised $4 billion in loans from foreign banks, giving it ample firepower to do deals overseas without the worry of needing Chinese regulators permission to shift cash offshore.China s largest gaming company wants to go global, and building an empire doesn t come cheap.
Above: GoGame is a Singaporean publisher promising to help developers identify fraud in player acquisition.Marketing fraud extracted $6.3 billion from developers last year, and Singaporean publisher GoGame says developers should only work with publishers that understand that problem.Speaking at the Casual Connect conference in Singapore last week, GoGame chief executive officer David Ng explained that mobile studios desperate for new players are often paying for bots instead.Gaming on iOS and Android thrives on free-to-play apps with virtual items that sell for real money.Typically, a studio agrees to pay a certain amount for each install these networks bring in.For now, he probably has a point since a publisher paying attention to fraud like this is better than one that wants to brute force their way through it with larger marketing budgets.

The goal is that the two companies will work together to capitalize on the Chinese market strategy, simulation and role-playing story driven. But it is also good to have a strong industrial owner, which means you can do business together if, for example, is planning acquisitions in a few years ", said Fredrik Wester. Earlier this week it was revealed that Tencent is negotiating to buy a majority stake in the Finnish gaming company Supercell, who are behind Clash of Clans. The company pointed out that, like usual, developer Supercell s Clash of Clans and Clash Royale were huge on mobile, bringing in over $100 million. On console and PC, it was Dark Souls III that made the biggest impact. While familiar games that have a lot of in-game purchases, like Call of Duty: Black Ops III, FIFA 16, and The Division still topped digital console revenues, Bandai Namco s notoriously difficult role-playing adventure Dark Souls III cracked the chart at No.Bandai Namco s newest title earned an estimated $45 million from digital channels in the first month of its release, outperforming console revenue by nearly $18 million, SuperData chief executive officer Joost van Dreunen said.Dark Souls I and II both had a number of problems on PC involving glitches and frame-rate issues, but Bandai Namco addressed those problems the third time around and is seeing the benefits.Beyond Dark Souls III on PC, SuperData points out that all sectors of digital gaming are growing but none quite as quickly as Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.Mobile, client-based PC games, and traditional PC games also show year-over-year growth in revenue and monthly active users as digital full game downloads and free-to-play games take market share from physical games
Above: MiitomoAs we outlined in our previous post in April, Nintendo s first mobile app, Miitomo, debuted and quickly shot to the No.The benchmark: King and SupercellKing, the maker of Candy Crush Saga, and Supercell, the maker of Clash of Clans, are two of the world s top mobile game developers.Miitomo did fall off the charts more rapidly than the others, but Supercell and King both likely spent more on advertising to help sustain their download volumes.Looking at the metrics shows the true depth of the problem. The numbers show that Miitomo is played half as often on average in a week as Clash Royale, a poor omen for future performance. What matters is building an app that captures users attention and keeps them coming back.
As we abandon the computers on our desk for the miniature ones in our pockets, we are spending less time on websites themselves and more within apps dedicated to shopping, reading, chatting, or working.Apple, which takes a 30pc cut from app purchases, saw a 35pc increase in revenue from its online App Store last quarter.Today, the app stores are dominated by the two internet giants: at the time of writing, six of the top 10 apps in Apple s marketplace are owned by them.Few must-have apps have been released in the last two or three years – those that have become successes were launched years ago, before the industry became overcrowded. The majority of spending is on in-app purchases within gaming apps: upgrades to freemium games that give players an edge. This is concentrated largely among a few colossal successes such as Supercell and King, the developers of Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga respectively.
Those robots in disguise just can t help smashing things on our little ball of dirt in the cosmos.Mobile game publisher Backflip Studios released Transformers: Earth Wars, a mobile base-building strategy game think Clash of Clans, but with the iconic Optimus Prime and Megatron instead of those loony warriors from Supercell s hit .The Space Ape-developed mobile game is on iOS and Android, and it uses writers and voice actors from the original Transformers cartoon from the 1980s.The story extends the Generations Prime Wars trilogy story, which Transformers IP holder Hasbro is rolling out in toys and comics, to mobile gaming, the nearly $37 billion segment where many licensed games live nowadays. It s also the second game Backflip has made with a Hasbro IP since the toy company purchased a $112 million stake in the mobile publisher in 2014.The game features looks from the current Generations line, which does have some IDW comics in addition to the figures, a Backflip spokesperson said via email.Cullen and Welker have reprised their voice roles in a number of games, films, and TV shows over the years.Cullen s portraying Prime in two Transfomers shows: Cartoon Network s Robots in Disguise and Rescue Bots on Discovery Family formerly the Hub .
And our latest look at the Play Store s biggest and brightest new apps is rounded out by tricky rhythm game VOEZ and the Clash of Clans-esque Transformers: Earth Wars. Here s another app you might consider: NBA Fit, a new resource designed by Under Armour to merge fitness resources and tracking with guidance and challenges inspired by the league and its many notable stars.Reloaded is an homage to old-school arcade shooters, tasking you with keeping your plane in the air as you scroll upwards through waves of enemy ships and bullet patterns. You ve got a new option: Egg comes from the makers of chat app Line, but it s a standalone offering that lets you record and send the results wherever you please.VOEZ is another one of those games, offering notes you ll need to tap, hold, and swipe to the beat to keep your scoring chain alive. It s grindy in a very familiar freemium way, but at least it looks sharp and brings back classic voice actors from the cartoon series.
It grew to become a multibillion-dollar category, but then it got too crowded last year. But Jia Shen, CEO and founder of PowerCore, thinks that the toys-to-life space is just getting started. Many of these titles have hordes of loyal followers, so it makes sense to create toys and other merchandise that can integrate with the games, Shen said in an interview with me.They were doing limited editions with very quick turnaround.Shen: The costs are all over the board, depending. It s designed around an application program interface concept, basically. The interaction with the game itself … I forget how many monsters they have. The digital reward part of it is entirely managed on the fly.
SoftBank Group plans to sell most of its stake in GungHo Online Entertainment to management of the game publisher in deal valued at  ¥73 billion, or roughly $685 million, according to published reports.Japan-based GungHo, the maker of the popular Puzzle & Dragon s mobile game, said it plans to buy back its shares from the Japanese telecommunications giant.GungHo will hold a tender offer starting within 20 days from June 3 for ¥294 a share. The news follows upon SoftBank s announcement that it was selling its shares in Alibaba Group for  about $10 billion. And rumors persist that SoftBank still plans to sell its 73 percent stake in Finland-based Supercell, the maker of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, for well over $5 billion.Nikesh Arora, new appointed president of SoftBank s international investments and operations, reportedly has decided to sell some of SoftBank s video game properties. These businesses are the envy of the mobile gaming world, and it s surprising that any company would decide to sell them — since they make so much money — so soon after acquiring them. But SoftBank has more than $80 billion in debt, about a third of it related to its U.S. mobile carrier, Sprint.

Tencent is reportedly in talks to purchase a majority stake in Finnish video game company Supercell, the developer of the popular "Clash of Clans" game.Bloomberg reports that Tencent has its eye on SoftBank's majority stake in the developer, which it acquired in 2013.It could mean that the Finnish company is valued at $9 billion £6.2 billion - much higher than the $770 million £532 million the company was valued at in 2015.The Wall Street Journal reported last month that the talks were happening, but that they are still at an early stage.Supercell is one of Europe's video game success stories, often mentioned alongside "Candy Crush" developer King, which sold to Activision Blizzard in 2015 for $5.9 billion £4 billion .The hit game that made Supercell successful is "Clash of Clans," a strategy game that encourages players to keep returning and spending more money.
