On December 1, Brookings held a webinar on the future of tech antitrust in the Biden administration.

Two of the first companies to operationalize AI were Amazon and Google, both targets for potential antitrust action.

To understand how that could impact the industry, many people are talking about the failed actions against Microsoft a few decades ago.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is experimenting with using a swarm of autonomous drones and ground robots to assist with military missions.

In a video of a recent test, DARPA showed how its robots analyzed two city blocks to find, surround, and secure a mock city building.

DARPA conducted its test back in June in Georgia, featuring both drones and ground-based robots.

The demonstration was part of DARPA’s OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) program, which is designed to eventually accompany small infantry units as they work in dense urban environments, and could eventually scale up to 250 drones and ground robots.

The test back in June was the second of six planned tests, which DARPA says will increase in complexity as they happen over the next couple of years.

While individual drones can be useful, a swarm of them would be more difficult for someone to eliminate if they don’t want to be seen.

For the last two years, hackers have come to the Voting Village at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas to tear down voting machines and analyze them for vulnerabilities.

And Darpa wants you to know: its endgame goes way beyond securing the vote.

The agency hopes to use voting machines as a model system for developing a secure hardware platform—meaning that the group is designing all the chips that go into a computer from the ground up, and isn’t using proprietary components from companies like Intel or AMD.

“The goal of the program is to develop these tools to provide security against hardware vulnerabilities,” says Linton Salmon, the project’s program manager at Darpa.

ATRA would be staffed by program managers who would include researchers from both academia and industry.

Industry funding would represent a significant fraction of total ATRA funding, and industry as well as academic researchers would be deeply involved in research activities.There are a number of options for where within the federal government such a program could fit, each with its own set of tradeoffs.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is experimenting with using a swarm of autonomous drones and ground robots to assist with military missions.

In a video of a recent test, DARPA showed how its robots analyzed two city blocks to find, surround, and secure a mock city building.

DARPA conducted its test back in June in Georgia, featuring both drones and ground-based robots.

The demonstration was part of DARPA’s OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) program, which is designed to eventually accompany small infantry units as they work in dense urban environments, and could eventually scale up to 250 drones and ground robots.

The test back in June was the second of six planned tests, which DARPA says will increase in complexity as they happen over the next couple of years.

While individual drones can be useful, a swarm of them would be more difficult for someone to eliminate if they don’t want to be seen.
