It's the perfect setup for a horror movie: There's a lonely house in the woods and a weird ritual that our naive protagonist Chris 's Daniel Kaluuya doesn't understand until it's too late.Except the "woods" are a bucolic suburb and the weird ritual is meeting his girlfriend Rose's family for the first time. But something even creepier than awkward small talk is going on.And that's where the horror/fun of begins. At the same time, Chris starts to notice something... off.The few black people he sees among the family friends are alarmingly blank-eyed, eagerly behaving as servants, or in one case the much-younger lover of beaming white woman who shows him off like a prize.
Online streaming is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort through the good and the bad.If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.Jordan Peele’s excellent directorial debut follows photographer Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), a young, black man embarking on a trip to meet the parents of his white girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams).Sure enough, Rose’s parents, Dean (Bradley Whitford) and Missy (Catherine Keener) are friendly, if a bit obnoxious in their attempts to seem “woke.” But when their friends gather for a party, Chris starts to notice some strange behaviors.Simon Rich’s deliciously surreal Man Seeking Woman is one recent example, but at least we got one last, brilliant season before it met its end.Episodes explore situations like meeting a significant other’s parents, or trying to ease into their friend group, but in the show’s typical fashion, these scenarios take bizarre turns.
Here come the heroes -- and the villains, space explorers, and dystopian futures. In 2018, "Black Panther" will reign, the Avengers will assemble for an "Infinity War," and Han will go "Solo," among other big-screen happenings.Get "Ready Player One" for all the movies coming in the year ahead.Ryan Coogler directs Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis in Marvel's Afro-futuristic superhero spectacular "Black Panther," hitting theaters in February.
The very nature of awards ceremonies mean that while there are plenty of winners, there are even more people in the room who walk away without winning a prize. At Sunday (7 January) night’s Golden Globes, Hugh Jackman was among them. But while many stars work on their “It’s-totally-fine-I-don’t-mind-losing-out-at-all” face ahead of the events, it seems the ‘Greatest Showman’ actor didn’t spend too long on his:The actor had lost out to James Franco in the (deep breath) Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category. It wasn’t just Hugh who was gutted either, as many fans also bemoaned the fact ‘Get Out’ star Daniel Kaluuya also missed out.James’s speech divided Twitter users too, thanks to the fact he invited Tommy Wiseau on stage but didn’t let him address the audience.
But despite the fact that this year’s Globes were the first major Hollywood awards ceremony to take place since many of its female stars and workers spoke up about sexual misconduct within the industry, Alexander failed to even mention it.He also failed to acknowledge his character’s abhorrent behavior, even though he attended the ceremony wearing a Time’s Up pin.Alexander Skarsgard just won for playing a domestic abuser.Sam Rockwell won for playing a violent man.Neither of them felt compelled to make a statement against male violence in that moment.— Robyn Swirling (@RSwirling) January 8, 2018
Earlier this month, the 2018 Golden Globes raised awareness of sexual assault, harassment and gender inequality in the workplace. Not only did Hollywood stars sport all-black ensembles in solidarity with victims, but eight stars also made powerful statements by bringing female activists as their dates. But now that the award show has come and gone, many people are left wondering, now what?Despite the lack of a new all-black red carpet presence, the Time’s Up movement is only picking up steam, as celebrities are now putting their Golden Globes’ outfits up for auction, to raise money for the initiative’s legal defence fund.On Wednesday, it was announced that Time’s Up, EBay, and Condé Nast will be teaming up to run the auction starting Friday, Jan. 19.Celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Tracee Ellis Ross, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Daniel Kaluuya, and many more have willingly donated their black dresses and tuxedos to the initiative.
It's almost time for the biggest night of the year in Hollywood! The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards ceremony were unveiled Tuesday morning by Tiffany Haddish ("Girls Trip") and Andy Serkis ("The Force Awakens").2017 was a great year for film, leaving many of the categories open, and no clear frontrunners for best picture."Get Out" surprised with four nominations including best actor for Daniel Kaluuya, best original screenplay, and best director for Jordan Peele.Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" earned him his first nomination for directing, and has the second-most nominations (eight) next to "The Shape of Water" (13).Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird" made her the fifth woman ever to be nominated for best director, and got a few other nominations including best actress for Saoirse Ronan, best original screenplay, and best picture.
It’s no understatement to say ‘Black Panther’ is one of the most hotly-anticipated films of the decade, and in the run-up to its release, lead star Chadwick Boseman has (rightly) been in the spotlight. However, with its UK debut finally upon us, Chadwick is set to share the limelight with his phenomenal co-stars - including Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira - but there’s one in particular who has caught our attention: Letitia Wright.Letitia plays Black Panther’s sister Shuri, who is the brains behind all of the hero’s armour, weapons and gadgets, with a side hustle as a total scene-stealer who delivers all the best lines. With another Marvel appearance pencilled in for later this year, we reckon she’ll be a fan favourite in no time.Get to know Letitia a little better with our 9 facts in 90 seconds...At 24, Letitia has already racked up a string of seriously impressive parts, including a star turn in the critically-acclaimed ‘Black Museum’ episode of ‘Black Mirror’.
“I met Denzel [Washington] and Oprah at the same time,” he explained.“It was like this segue of African American excellence.“Denzel came up to me with an English accent and was like ‘yeah mate, cheers mate, cheers mate’, and I said, ‘wooah, what’s happening? How do you know who I am?’.”“And then he went to his wife, ‘He thinks I don’t know who he is!’.Then he goes, Come meet Oprah.”

Disney has announced that it will donate $1 million from the profits of Marvel's Black Panther to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for use in the group's national STEM curriculum teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The move is in-keeping with the film's themes of how the technologically advanced fictional nation of Wakanda can share its knowledge and advanced tech to help the world and young people from marginalised communities.Black Panther has made more than $700 million at the global box office since its release two weeks ago, breaking numerous records on its way to that total. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), a non-profit dedicated to setting up after-school programs - has said in a statement the money would be used to create new innovation centers in 12 cities. The cities include Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis, Washington and Oakland, California, where Black Panther director Ryan Coogler grew up and where parts of the film take place."It is thrilling to see how inspired young audiences were by the spectacular technology in the film," Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger said in a separate statement.
