Huawei has officially announced HarmonyOS, the operating system it was rumored to be developing to replace its reliance on Android.

In China the software will be known as HongmengOS.

The company says the operating system can be used in everything from smartphones to smart speakers and internet-of-things devices like sensors.

There’s been a lot of speculation about Huawei’s in-house operating system ever since Google suspended the company’s Android license back in May, following the US government’s decision to put Huawei on the Entity List.

Huawei has made no secret of the fact that it’s been working on its own OS, but the extent to which it would be able to act as a substitute for Android is unclear.

HarmonyOS was created with four major building blocks in mind, ensuring a new generation OS that is best suited for our digital world today.

SYM 506 Week 1 Discussion 1

Topic 1 Discussion 1

The U.S. government keeps statistics on many people in America. One interesting statistic is the poverty rate. To be living in poverty, one must earn income below a certain threshold (approximately $900 per month). Many multimillionaires are included in this statistic. Recently, Barbara Streisand was "living in poverty." In a particular year, she did not perform live, and her album sales were extremely slow. She has a great deal of wealth but had little income that year. Although she has more money than 99.99% of the rest of the population, the government believed that she was impoverished. What other statistic can you name that is misleading? Why?

Assignment 2

For the statistics project you are completing in this course, you will need to select a relevant topic that will allow you to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. You may gather data from a group of your choice using a data collection instrument (survey or data mining) that you design. Using the results of that collection instrument, you will create a data set, analyze the data, and create a professional report showing the results of the data that you collected.

For this assignment you will choose a topic and create a data collection instrument. When selecting a topic, remember you need to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Data collection could be done in the form of a survey via a medium such as Survey Monkey or Facebook or through available workplace content such as sales orders. You will want to collect data from approximately 30 observations. This means you will want to survey at least 30 people or select data from 30 different sales orders.

Submit the topic of the study, a rationale (one or two paragraphs) outlining the purpose of the study, and the data collection instrument you created as a Word document. Include relevant survey links if the data is being collected digitally.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

According to CNBC, Huawei’s US security director Andy Purdy said on Wednesday that the US government should implement a risk mitigation plan for Huawei like Nokia and Ericsson.

Other telecom companies’ security threats to the US are not lower than us.

Andy said, ‘The security threats from unsafe countries do exist.

This is why Huawei strictly tests its products and makes them meet international standards.’

Andy said that the United States has adopted ‘mitigation measures’ for Nokia and Ericsson equipment, and this should be the case for Huawei, because ‘Nokia and Ericsson also have deep transactions with China.’ Andy said that other countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom are taking the necessary measures so that Huawei can start its business smoothly.

Huawei Technologies will first equip its self-developed operating system on new smart display products to be launched by budget brand Honor this weekend, according to people familiar with the situation.

This comes as the world’s second largest smartphone vendor continues to battle the effects of being placed on a US trade blacklist.

The long-awaited operating system, known as Hongmeng, will be introduced during the three-day Developer Conference in Dongguan starting August 9, said the people, who declined to be identified as the information is private.

On July 26, Honor president George Zhao Ming unveiled the HiSilicon “Honghu 818” intelligent chipset and smart pop-up camera for large screens at the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) in Guangzhou.

The move was a warm up ahead of the official release of the smart display products in Dongguan.

Google and Microsoft, whose Android and Windows operating systems are currently used on Huawei’s laptops and tablets, have both suspended access for new Huawei devices.

US government agencies have received the first version of regulations that prevents the use of Huawei products and services for projects funded by the taxpayer.

The ban also covers four other Chinese telecommunications firms, including ZTE, and was included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in 2018.

The five companies have been excluded on national security grounds.

The publication of the new rules is the first time that government agencies and contractors will have seen how the ban affects them.

Huawei has persistently denied any allegations of wrongdoing and is contesting the ban.

Huawei will be officially banned from the United States from August 13, 2019, reveals the US government.

Several months after the Trump decree, Washington formalized the rules against the Chinese manufacturer.

Despite the easing announced at the G20, the manufacturer will no longer be allowed to enter into contracts with US public markets.

The government ensures that exemptions can be granted.

Yesterday, August 7, 2019, the US government officially unveiled the measures that will regulate the trade between the Chinese companies, including Huawei, ZTE, Hytera Communications Corporation, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Company and Dahua Technology Company, and the US federal agencies.

These measures, already mentioned in Donald Trump’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), will, therefore, come into effect.

In response to the U.S. government’s decision to effectively ban Huawei equipment from stateside cellular networks, the Beijing-based company asserted in May that it was readying an in-house operating system (OS) for launch on devices in China by year-end 2019.

Today at its developer conference in Dongguan, China, Huawei formally announced the OS — HongmengOS, or HarmonyOS in English — and revealed that it will ship not only on future mobile devices, but on in-vehicle systems, smart speakers, and wearables, too.

Huawei expects the first version of HarmonyOS — HarmonyOS 1.0 — to arrive with unnamed smart screen products due out in the coming months.

(Reuters reported this week that Huawei-owned Honor would bring HarmonyOS to a smart TV and potentially a smartphone.)

China will be the initial focus ahead of an expansion to other markets in mid-2020, and Huawei says it plans to “optimize” and “gradually adopt” HarmonyOS across a range of devices over the next three years.

“We’re entering a day and age where people expect a holistic intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios.

The White House wants the U.S. government to have a much bigger say on what you see on social media.

A new draft executive order from the White House would put the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in charge of deciding what sites like Twitter and Facebook can remove from their sites, reports CNN, which obtained a copy of a summary of the order.

President Donald Trump and other conservative leaders have long said that conservative content is censored on major social media networks — even though the data shows otherwise.

This order, called “Protecting Americans from Online Censorship,” appears aimed at making it so that conservative content could better thrive on those sites, regardless of whether it breaks the rules.

The order could help conspiracy theories, misinformation, and even deepfakes thrive even more on social media, if they’re considered political conversation.

The proposed order calls for the FCC to create new regulations on how and when the law will protect social media websites, specifically when those sites decide to remove or suppress content on their platforms.

In the 1950s and 1960s, states and cities in the U.S. began adding fluoride to drinking water supplies, following decades of research and anecdotal reports showing that fluoride could prevent tooth decay, especially in children.

Parts of the UK also receive water that has been through a fluoridation process, particularly in the Midlands and the north.

And water fluoridation continues to be endorsed by public health and dental organisations as one of the most worthwhile and cost-effective health policies ever implemented.

(In the U.S., fluoridation is thought to cost an average dollar per person, far less than the medical costs of treating even one cavity).

But some scientists have also argued that fluoridation as it exists today could have unintended, harmful health effects.

Maybe it’s not that chronic low-level fluoride exposure leads to poorer kidney function, but that people with preexisting poor kidney function are less able to metabolise fluoride.

Sue Gordon was a name Americans were never supposed to know—the exemplar par excellence of the legion of career, nonpartisan officials who devote a lifetime to anonymous government service.

She rose through the ranks as part of the first generation of women to assume top roles, becoming a deputy director of the CIA, then deputy director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and, most recently, serving for nearly three years in a role known as the principal deputy director of national intelligence—the nation’s No.

2 intelligence leader, and the top career intelligence official in the US government.

Well-respected, personable, and a quiet, behind-the-scenes leader, she is—hands down—one of the most thoughtful, smartest, and impressive people I’ve encountered in a dozen years of covering intelligence and national security.

Her forced departure by President Trump, announced last night, is only the latest shuffle of top national security posts under this administration.

The pattern began in Trump’s first weeks in office, with the firing of the acting attorney general, Sally Yates, and the dismissal of the acting director of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement the same night, followed within days by the firing of the chief of the Border Patrol.

Facebook is facing exposure to billions of dollars in potential damages as a federal appeals court on Thursday rejected Facebook’s arguments to halt a class action lawsuit claiming it illegally collected and stored the biometric data of millions of users.

The class action lawsuit has been working its way through the courts since 2015, when Illinois Facebook users sued the company for alleged violations of the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act by automatically collecting and identifying people in photographs posted to the service.

Now, thanks to an unanimous decision from the 9th U.S.

The most significant language from the decision from the circuit court seems to be this:

We conclude that the development of face template using facial-recognition technology without consent (as alleged here) invades an individual’s private affairs and concrete interests.

Similar conduct is actionable at common law.

The Trump administration released details of a rule on Wednesday that will officially bar US government agencies from buying telecommunications equipment from Huawei, despite the Chinese firm’s efforts to fight the move in court.

Why it matters: The rule comes after the latest round of trade talks between the US and China ended without a deal, making Huawei, again, a bargaining chip in a stand-off between the world’s two largest economies.

The prohibition cites the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed last year, which restricts the use of federal money to purchase telecom equipment from companies that pose national security risks, which include Huawei.

The ban is also part of a broader US push against Huawei over the fears that Huawei gear may provide backdoors for the Chinese government into American and its allies’ networks.

“The law provides Huawei with no opportunity to rebut the accusations, to present evidence in its defense, or to avail itself of other procedures that impartial adjudicators provide to ensure a fair search for the truth.”

—Song Liuping, the chief legal officer at Huawei, commenting on the NDAA

The U.S. government keeps statistics on many people in America.
