The Nokia brand is set to return to smartphones, two years after the Finnish company sold its flagship handset business and walked away defeated by Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.Nokia Oyj said Wednesday it will license its brand to a Helsinki-based company run by former Nokia managers, HMD Global Oy, which plans investments topping $500 million to bring mobile phones and tablets to the market.FIH Mobile Ltd., part of Foxconn Technology Group, will help to build the devices.HMD will be in charge of designing, making and selling the devices, said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia s IP-licensing business. If things don t live up to expectations, the company isn t saddled with enormous inventory and expense still on the books, said Ramon Llamas, an analyst at IDC.Nokia and HMD will be trying to crack a tough market with Samsung, Apple and Huawei Technologies Co. dominating smartphone sales with about half of the total 334 million high-end phones shipped in the first quarter, according to data from researcher IDC.Royal Philips Electronics NV sold its television business to TPV Technology, which kept the Dutch company s name on its sets. For Finns, the deal may restore some national pride in the country s best-known company. The sale of the business, less than three years after then-Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop joined Nokia from Microsoft, prompted Ilta-Sanomat, Finland s biggest tabloid, to called him a Trojan Horse who assisted Microsoft all along.HMD is now acquiring the rights for the next decade.Nokia more recently has been getting most of its revenue from wireless network equipment and related software and services.
It's an interesting theory to say the least, however this has led some music lovers to ask how they can expect to use their existing headphones with Apple's new flagship phone.Thankfully help is at hand: there's a growing collection of digital-to-analogue converters – or DACs – which are increasingly compatible with iPhones. As its name suggests, a digital-to-analogue converter converts a signal from its digital source to the analogue audio waves your ears end up hearing.Unless you're still rocking a classic collection of vinyl or, even less likely, cassette tapes the music you're listening to on a daily basis is stored digitally in either an audio file or CD.The second reason to shell out for an upgrade is the fact that some of the more premium headphones on the market are 'high-impedance' headphones, which require more power through the headphone jack on your music source in order to work properly. An external DAC helps with these headphones as it can work as a headphone amp to provide the extra power needed to drive a high-impedance pair of 'phones.

The first phone in the Moto X series from Motorola came in August 2013. Last year's Moto X Force could be the last device in the chain. The report points out that the Moto X series disappears and is replaced by Moto Z, which might fit well now that Sony abandoned Z names. Another manufacturer that changed the naming of the flagship this year is HTC, who skipped the One M and short, call the year's top model 10th Any cause of Motorola's new naming is not mentioned, but perhaps the company wants to signal a fresh start. The sequel to Moto X style will reportedly have a modular design - it will go to button on the backs which extends the phone's functionality in different ways.
Honda is stepping up its self-driving game with a second-generation autonomous prototype that will be unleashed in California this year. The new test vehicle is much sleeker than the automated RLX unveiled last year, thanks to a lower-profile LiDAR sensor that replaces the spinning turret mounted to the roof of the previous car.Honda says the entire suite of sensors — which also includes radar, cameras, and GPS — is new, along with virtually everything else. The RLX also boasts higher-performance CPUs and GPUs, with improved cabling, heat management, and circuitry, according to Honda.Radar is good at detecting the relative speed and position of objects, while cameras are better at identifying objects based on size and shape, Honda notes. While Apple s car plans are still quite opaque, Honda says its test program is part of a plan to put self-driving technology into production by 2020.
When you think of artificial intelligence these days, it's easy to think of the chat bots that the tech industry seems obsessed with. And chat bots as they exist today are pretty underwhelming. But Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff says that AI is way bigger than that, and is really the next big thing after mobile and social changed the tech world over the past five years.Smart computers that can think, talk, reason, and predict will be able to do more than just search Google for us or order a pizza. They will eventually do stuff we haven't even imagined yet.Benioff, talking to analysts during Salesforce's quarterly conference call, called this the "AI-first world. It's an email inbox that takes a salesperson's email and calendar info and the customer data in Salesforce's cloud to help salespeople prioritize their work. He's not alone with this vision.IBM CEO Ginni Rometty has been preaching this concept for a while. She calls it cognitive computing and believes that smart computers are going to be part of every decision humans make and eventually change who you are.IBM's AI tech is called Watson, and it's already being used for everything from personalized health to powering human-like robots.Google chairman Eric Schmidt predicts that AI and machine learning — i.e., computers that can teach themselves stuff — will be what drives all the next huge successful startups and IPOs in the next five years. He compares AI to the mobile revolution that gave us Uber, Snapchat, and others. The prime example of Google's AI engine is Google Now and Google Photos.Cortana is its flagship example — you don't count Tay, the Twitter bot that quickly turned racist and was unplugged.
Troubled startup Theranos has voided two years' worth of blood-test results from its flagship Edison machines, reports The Wall Street Journal. Those machines are Theranos' main claim to fame.CEO Elizabeth Holmes rose to prominence on the huge promise that, with Edison, Theranos can test for blood-borne diseases with only a pinprick of blood from a fingertip. But amid larger concerns over the accuracy and viability of the Edison technology, Theranos has told federal regulators that it's thrown out all results from 2014 and 2015.That includes tests that Theranos did with Edison, as well as the ones it performed with traditional lab equipment, according to The Journal's report. That means that anybody who got a Theranos blood test during that period may have gotten wrong results. The Journal report indicates that physicians in Phoenix have gotten corrected results from Theranos in recent weeks. In fact, one patient went to the emergency room in 2014 based on a Theranos blood-test result, says the report — a result that's now been amended. The move to throw the test results out is a sign that Theranos is trying to show government agencies that it can regulate its own shortcomings."We've taken comprehensive corrective measures to address the issues CMS raised in their observations. As these matters are currently under review, we have no further comment at this time," the company said, referring to the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.NOW WATCH: How NASA s groundbreaking work on human blood can predict your reaction to certain drugsLoading video...
JiaYu s German distributor has posted images and specs of the upcoming JiaYu M1.Jiayu seem to still be in a stage of limbo at the moment with news that they both will and won t continue to make flagship phones.Over the past few months we have heard various reports that the JiaYu S4 will launch, but so far there is not evidence of that. There is however evidence of a new phone called the JiaYu M1, a budget device which is slated to go on sale in Germany later in the year. For those of you with a good knowledge of Chinese phones, the JiaYu M1 might look familar, to our eyes it looks like a slightly modified iNew V3 smartphone, and in fact even the 5-inch 1280 x 720 panel is the same size. With budget buyers in mind the M1 will come with 2GB RAM, 16GB memory, a rather small 2750mAh battery, MT6580 quad-core chipset, with the only highlights being the claimed 8 mega-pixel front and 13 mega-pixel rear cameras however expect actual specs to be nearer 5MP 8MP .Online pricing of similar phones would suggest that the JiaYu M1 could sell for around $70, however we expect a price closer to $100 for physical stores in the EU after taxes.

Back in April BlackBerry CEO John Chen confirmed that the company would be bringing out two new Android phones this year and now one of them has popped up on a benchmark, giving us a look at the specs. The phone, believed to be codenamed the BlackBerry Hamburg, has been spotted on GFXBench by and it paints a mid-range picture, with a 5.2-inch 1080p screen, a 1.5GHz octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 12MP rear camera and a 7MP or possibly 8MP front-facing one.Fixing a mistakeThose specs as a whole would be a significant step down from the flagship BlackBerry Priv, but that's no surprise, as Chen revealed that he believed the Priv was a mistake, as it was too expensive for many of its enterprise customers. So, while the benchmark could certainly be a fake, it lines up with what we're expecting to see and further suggests that BlackBerry could be moving away from high-end hardware, at least for the time being. The design of the BlackBerry Hamburg remains a mystery, but it's not expected to have a keyboard. That too is likely to be mid-range, though no spec details have yet been revealed, and it's thought that both phones will launch for under US$500 around £350, AU$659 .
