The goal is a peer-to-peer serverless hosting, storage and serving solution that is DDOS-resistant, fault-tolerant, has zero-downtime, and is censorship-resistant.This gave way to Web 2.0 and a "Faustian bargain" which traded control of content, access and user data for scalable hosting infrastructure which is kept cheap or free by selling on their profile info to third parties for targeted advertising.Swarm lead developer Viktor Trón told IBTimes UK: "It occurred to the founders of Ethereum quite early on that this could be a very good skeleton for a new generation of the web, a vision they termed Web 3.Firstly, as a content distribution system for Dapps; secondly for certain application logic which is not consensus critical which you don't want to be replicated on every node, think the database component of web applications; and thirdly, the blockchain itself could be stored in a decentralised way."And similarly if you had a decentralised Airbnb, then you would have all the accommodation offerings with the photos of everything on Swarm. The solution proposed in the orange paper uses cryptographically verifiable proof of custody combined with erasure coding a method of data protection in which data is broken into fragments, expanded and encoded with redundant data pieces and stored across a set of different locations or storage media .
At its I/O 2016 developer conference today, Google announced an expansion of Firebase, its service for helping developers build apps for Android, iOS, and the Web.Now the company has decided it s time to turn Firebase into a true Google service.Jason Titus, head of Google s developer product group, told VentureBeat his team has been working with a wide range of developers to gather feedback on other major pain points for app development.A new C SDK beta is also available. On top of Firebase s existing features, Realtime Database, User Authentication, and Hosting, Google is adding tools to help developers build faster, improve app quality, acquire and engage users, and monetize apps.Crash Reporting also works with Audiences so you can tell if users on a particular device, in a specific location, or in any other custom segment are experiencing a specific problem. After an app has launched, Firebase offers the following growth features:Dynamic Links is by far the most interesting.Test Lab still does the same thing: helps developers find problems in their app before their users do, using automatic and customized testing on real devices hosted in Google data centers.Firebase Storage isn t a rebranding, though the new feature is powered by Google Cloud Storage. For the four paid products Test Lab, Storage, Realtime Database, and Hosting , Google has simplified the pricing to:So, what exactly are you paying for?

According to Gartner s 2016 CMO spend survey, converting leads to sales ranked second to innovation as the top area where senior management s expectations of marketing responsibility increased over 2015.According to Sangram Vajre, co-founder and CMO of Terminus, author of Account-Based Marketing For Dummies, and considered as one of the most influential digital marketers, 2016 is well on its way to earning the definition as the year of account-based marketing.More focus on marketing leads, instead of engagementsMany B2B marketers still think their primary activities should include as blasting emails to the entire database, attending the annual industry tradeshow, and hosting a webinar each month. There s little-to-no ROI from teams who practice traditional lead generation. She s either going think you re sketchy, or she will take that free shot then keep hanging out with her friends.Sure, you got the prospect s attention with your webinar, but what happens next to turn that prospect into an opportunity is what truly matters.
Google's Project Zero has published details of a serious security failing in Symantec and Norton anti-virus products, allowing for simple remote code execution.Google's Project Zero has published details of embarrassing security failings in Symantec and Norton anti-virus products which allow attackers to execute arbitrary malicious code on a system simply by sending an email or hosting a web page.Discovered by Google's Tavis Ormandy as part of the Project Zero security programme, the vulnerabilities in Symantec's products are extremely serious: the anti-virus engine produced by the company suffers from a buffer overflow condition which can be used to execute arbitrary code on the target system as simply as sending an email - even if the target never opens said email.Symnantec has issued a patch which prevents Ormandy's exploit from executing, though concerns are likely to remain for some time with regard to the company's approach to developing supposed security products.Said patch should have already applied to affected systems, though Symantec is advising users to manually run the LiveUpdate tool in order to ensure that the flaw is patched properly and fully.According to Symantec, the company is 'not aware of exploitation of or adverse customer impact from this issue.'
WhiteHat Security founder Jeremiah Grossman has published details that could help victims of domain hijacking. The penetration tester writes how he helped an unnamed video production house to fight a scammer who had opened a mimic website to defraud customers.Staff names and photos were altered along with contact information such that customers would contact the criminal instead of the film company.Grossman grabbed WHOIS data, and used the dig command and the American Registry for Internet Numbers to find the IP address and connected hosting provider, GoDaddy, which directed the hacker to report the fraud to ICANN.The scammer cottoned on and changed his code to kill the redirect, and was soon defeated after GoDaddy took the fraudulent site down. The largest and most vigilant brands pre-register copycat domains, and typosquatting domains where a common mistyped key would lead to another website.

British recording artists took a record share of global music sales in 2015, but industry body the British Polyphonic Institute BPI is calling on the government to do more to sustain success.Figures from the BPI's Music Market Review of 2016 show that last year one in every six albums sold around the world, and five of the top ten albums overall, were by British artists, with Adele taking the top spot. The number of plays increased 82 per cent to 27 billion, which was reflected by a 69 per cent rise in income to £146.1 million.Even if they're not, as a user-generated content platform, chances are someone has unofficially uploaded them, making YouTube a convenient alternative to piracy via downloading. And as we ve seen time and again in the digital market, where music goes first, the rest of the content sector will follow."Government should press the EU to clarify that hosting safe harbours do not apply to services which, like YouTube, curate and market copyright content instead of acting as purely passive hosting platforms," Taylor explains.
C-level briefing: VR is invading the world, but data centres are still learning how to use it for their benefit - CBR asks Aegis Data's CEO how VR will boost the hosting business. However, despite data centres being the force that motors the content visualised in every headset, they still have not yet taken VR 100% into their operations. This comes depsite the huge opportunity and potential VR could bring to data centre management - a view shared by Greg McCulloch, CEO at enterprise data centre services provider Aegis Data, who believes the data centre industry has the potential to be the biggest benefactor from the rise in VR.Just four years ago, HPC required 10kw racks, but now the demand has increased ranging all the way up to 30kw.It is also crucial that facilities are future-proofed for such disrupting technologies, and that is "another key challenge for data centre organisations"."Many claim to provide high performance racks but that equals far more infrastructure demands and therefore additional costs.
Google announced that Chromebooks would be able to download apps from the Play Store, bringing the low-cost laptops into the Android ecosystem.Chromebook users will now be able to download Android apps such as Skype or Office, meaning that developers and companies can now easily build apps that are usable across smartphones, tablets and laptops. The devices are particularly popular in schools.Since most of the storage on Chromebooks is hosted in the cloud, a concern around hosting Android apps would be the limited memory of the devices. The move by Google to combine the Chrome OS and Android ecosystems reflects a broader shift towards multi-platform apps and ways of working. This is the first OS to render for all devices from the same kernel, meaning that the same applications can run across all the different major platforms, including desktop, tablet, mobile and emerging technologies such as augmented reality.

There are several key questions that need answering to understand this battle. The music industry is arguing that those laws are outdated: they were designed for the web hosting providers and email services at the time, not the YouTube of 2016 with its billion viewers and huge music catalogue. This leads in to the next thing that s fuelling the fire: some in the music industry think YouTube s massive catalogue of free music is making it harder for Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming services to persuade music fans to pay for their premium subscriptions. Finally, YouTube is pointing to some of the musicians who have built careers on its service, such as violinist Lindsey Stirling, with her 8 million subscribers and estimated annual earnings of $6m from selling music and touring, as well as YouTube. In the US and Europe, existing safe-harbour legislation is currently being reviewed, which is the main reason these arguments have blown up again in 2016.Smarter heads within the music industry and beyond are starting to wonder whether the real problem is with online advertising itself: that if a big increase in YouTube streams only yields a tiny increase in royalties, perhaps that s a sign that as viewing rockets, even Google-backed YouTube is struggling to sell enough ads and keep the rates up.

We ve all come across numerous Top 100 resources for startups -type posts at least once as we Google our way to entrepreneurial success. In this first installment we ll focus on what early-stage startups need to spend money on.We ll wrap up the series by enumerating some areas where entrepreneurs frequently want to spend money despite there being little, or even negative, ROI.For the purposes of this series, I m going to define an early-stage startup as a company that can fall into any of the following buckets:MRR is less than $10,000Number of recurring paying customers is less than 40Number of six-month-old recurring paying customers is less than 50 percent of total customersAll paying customers had a prior personal relationship with a member of the companyThe goal of this definition is to identify companies whose business is still in a state of flux.Nor does it take into account the time it takes me to upgrade the underlying DigitalOcean servers when our storage needs exceed the disk size of the current servers. In the next installment we ll look at places where free software is the way to go in the early-stage, including things like code hosting, CRM, status page, monitoring and customer feedback.
Firefox OS4K detailHD & SD sourcesFile handlingFreeview Play appHDR lacks sparkleTight viewing angleSome light leakageToo small for 4KThere's no doubt about it, 4K looks its best on a 60-inch TV.No, that distinction goes to the inclusion of high dynamic range HDR .That question has obviously been asked, and answered, by Panasonic's TV designers because they've fenced-off what they consider the unpopular ones.Gravity upscaled from a regular Blu-ray disc looks sharp and clean with both True Cinema and Cinema presets engaged, while 720p fare from HD channels on Freeview HD are highly watchable. The latter is extensive: a USB stick hosting all kinds of digital files, from 4K video files in the TS, MP4 and MKV formats to a load of AVI, WMV and other video files all played without a hiccup.Indeed, with its sleek design carrying it through despite the HDR confusion.
