After Apple s recent milestone, I posed the following question to a panel of business owners from Young Entrepreneur Council YEC :What do you see Apple reinventing next, and how will this change the markets in which they operate?Siri continues to be integrated into Apple products as exemplified by the most recent integration of Siri into Apple TV.The Automotive IndustryApple will either acquire Tesla or create their own hybrid electric and solar powered vehicle, which will of course be self-driving as well.IoT for Home AutomationAutomating and connecting the home as part of the IoT industry continues to be a growing market. While Apple has done some things related to home networking related to entertainment, they might consider getting into other aspects of the home related to the atmosphere, security and functionality. It s a billion dollar industry, probably more, so more people rely on travel and tech than ever.
The 2016 Volvo XC90 turned more than a few heads when it hit the scene late last year, but while its opening act was a whirlwind of sleek Scandinavian styling and unexpectedly plush luxury, it's the encore that's really going to cement its run in the hearts and minds of SUV-seeking American buyers. It's hard to see what could be more of a gamble than betting well-heeled families are willing to walk away from the forced-induction eight-cylinder engines that populate the upper echelons of the people mover segment in favor of a four-cylinder that's not only turbocharged AND supercharged, but also backed by a pair of electric motors.Certainly, the T6 was in no position to challenge its European rivals in a straight line, despite the considerable refinement offered by its still standard eight-speed automatic transmission. The Volvo XC90 T8 presents a radical re-think of the T6 setup, disconnecting the front and rear drive axles by replacing the driveshaft with the SUV's energy storage unit, but it maintains all-wheel drive capability through the careful integration of its pair of electric motors. The SUV's advertised 5.3 second jaunt to 60-mph is nothing to sneeze at, either, and represents over a full second of improvement compared to the T6.The latter feature works remarkably well, and in fact I was able to achieve 26-mpg from the XC90 T8 over the course of a week the vehicle's official EPA rating stands at 53 MPGe, or 25-mpg combined .
HmmmSecurity weaknesses in the set-up of Mitsubishi Outlander leave the hybrid car exposed to hack attacks - including the potential for crooks to disable theft alarms. The format is too simple and too short, so PTP was able to use brute force hacking techniques to crack the keys within four days.Much more seriously, PTP white hats were able to disable the £40K car s anti-theft alarm - something that wasn t possible in an earlier pen test against the Nissan Leaf electric car by the same team of security researchers.before going public.Mitsubishi told the security researchers that did not consider it a problem and had no plans to resolve the issues PTP had unearthed.Once all paired devices are unpaired, the Wi-Fi module will effectively go to sleep, Munro explained.
News: Ethical hackers take control of lights, heating and alarm through the car's wi-fi connection.Pen Test Partners found that the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid electric vehicle PHEV could be hacked into due to the wi-fi connection it uses to pair with mobile devices. To hack the car, the firm used this code and captured the handshake between one of the mobile devices and the car.Once connected, the hackers were able to turn the lights on the car on and off and interfere with the car's charging programme, which could force the car to charge using premium rate electricity. They also managed to turn the air conditioning and heating on and off to order.Pen Test Partners said that attempts to alert Mitsubishi had been greeted with a lack of interest until the BBC became involved.
Security researchers with Pen Test Partners have discovered a flaw that would allow a cyber attacker to remotely control Mitsubishi s Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle PHEV .Aside from severely limiting the effective range in which you can use the app to connect to the vehicle, the Wi-Fi method also presents a number of security-related issues. For starters, the Wi-Fi key for the vehicle s access point is written on a piece of paper in the owner s manual which typically gets stored in the glove box.Even more worrisome is the fact that the researchers were able to crack the key using a 4x GPU cracking rig in less than four days.Once all devices are unpaired, the Wi-Fi module will put itself into sleep mode and can only be woken up by pressing the car key remote 10 times. The firm said Mitsubishi was uninterested in what they had to say initially but once the BBC got involved, they changed their tune.
Experts at Pen Test Partners discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle PHEV SUV has a serious vulnerability that could give hackers access to a number of car controls, like the lights, heating, and unlocking system.I assume that it s been designed like this to be much cheaper for Mitsubishi than a GSM/web service/ mobile app-based solution, the researchers write, describing the existing method as a massive disadvantage to the user .We cracked it on a 4x GPU cracking rig in less than four days. The researchers were able to acquire both the SSID and the PSK for the car, giving them access to various vehicle controls: After figuring out the binary protocol used for messaging, we could successfully turn the lights on and off. They were even able to turn the air conditioning and heating on to drain the battery, and even disable the car alarm.Apparently Mitsubishi is now taking the issue very seriously at the highest levels , and a medium-term fix is currently in development.
Mack Truck LR, Hybrid Electric Garbage TruckTesla cofounder Ian Wright and his company Wrightspeed teamed up with commercial truck builder Mac Trucks to create a new hybrid electric trash hauler. They featured the Mack LR Model at the 2016 Waste Expo in Las Vegas, and was a move in the right direction for resource wasting refuse vehicles. This hybrid electric truck takes an innovative approach on electric vehicle design by taking the truck s worst fuel-wasting components and then replacing them with electrical components. The LR has four electric motors, and reportedly runs 24 miles on electricity alone.Wright announced the LR is capable of charging directly from the grid, and incorporates a range extender that burns fuel, makes electricity, and charges the batteries on the go to extend the truck s range.Even though the truck is not completely electric beyond its initial 24-mile range, the real innovation comes from engineering individual mechanical components of the truck to run on electricity, and as a result, drastically reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
He took a Stirling engine, a type of engine developed 200 years ago, and added some 21st-century technology to it.The result is a hybrid electric car so efficient that you never have to stop to recharge, reports Houston s KHOU11.This recycling feature boosts the engine s efficiency to a whopping 50 percent.NASA even experimented with the engine in the early 1980 s, and was able to achieve 54 miles per gallon, but the Space Agency never went any further with the technology.MacDowell also redesigned the Stirling engine to have the dimensions and appearance of a standard four-cylinder engine, making it compatible with existing automobiles. To showcase his original engine, MacDowell intends to drive an SUV across the country on less than 40 gallons of gasoline.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is poised to designate an all-electric plane concept as its newest, futuristic aircraft in the biggest boost yet for the idea of building airliners that don t burn fuel. The plane used lithium batteries to power the 36-minute flight, though there is still a long way to go to advance battery technology enough to take a similar approach for larger planes.Hydrogen fuel cells could allow airliners to taxi without their main engines running, reducing fuel consumption and noise, Mr. Davies said.ICAO members later this year could endorse a global carbon-dioxide cap-and-trade system for aviation, adding an incentive for airlines to reduce fuel consumption.NASA plans to demonstrate some of its electric-plane ideas with the coming X-Plane: a highly modified version of the four-seat, Tecnam P2006T plane, called the Sceptor.Cape Air operates a fleet of mainly nine-seat Cessna planes flying short routes, such as from Boston to Nantucket, Mass.
Mitsubishi is one of the first carmakers to reveal its plans for the upcoming biennial Paris Auto Show. The Japanese firm will travel to the French capital to unveil a futuristic-looking concept car powered by a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain. And while the intentionally blacked-out teaser image does a good job of hiding the off-roader s lines, we re told that it will fall in line with Mitsubishi s Dynamic Shield design language. At this point, all we know is that the Grand Tourer concept will boast four-wheel drive, and that it will be capable of driving on electricity alone for short distances. We ll hear more about Mitsubishi s upcoming concept in the next few weeks, and Digital Trends will be on the show floor in Paris to bring you live images of it as soon as the veil comes off.Mitsubishi has routinely shown hybrid off-roader concepts at major auto shows for the past couple of years, but most of them haven t made the transition from the show floor to the showroom — at least not yet.
A rotor for the i-DCD drive motor, using rare earth metal-free magnets.Honda said on Tuesday that it had created the first commercial hybrid-electric vehicle motor without using any heavy rare earth metals.Working with the expertise of Daido Steel Co., Honda s new motor will appear in this year s Honda Freed, a hybrid minivan sold in Japan.Rare earth metals are essential to making a plethora of items, including smartphones, laptops, missiles, and electric cars.Unfortunately, that group of elements are at risk of shortage, and many of them are mined predominantly in China, adding a special political flavor to ensuring a global supply for industry. In 2009, Reuters reported that Toyota, maker of the popular hybrid-electric Prius, risked suffering at the hands of a rare earth metal shortage.
Mercedes-AMG wants a piece of the megacar market that s currently dominated by the likes of Bugatti, Porsche, McLaren, and Ferrari. The company is secretly designing the fastest and most powerful model ever to wear an AMG nameplate, and rumors claim its debut is right around the corner.Called R50, the new model will share virtually no components with current members of the AMG lineup. For starters, it s expected to tip the scale at less than 2,900 pounds thanks in part to a brand new carbon fiber monocoque.Mechanically, the R50 will eschew AMG s ubiquitous 4.0-liter V8 and instead adopt a state-of-the-art gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain made up of a pair of electric motors mounted over the front axle and a 2.0-liter turbo four located right behind the passenger compartment. The electric motors will provide 150 horsepower each, and they ll likely be capable of driving the front wheels by themselves for short distances, while the turbo four will be tuned to provide 1,000 horsepower.
The Tesla Model 3 electric car, which its maker says will launch late next year with 200 miles of range and a $35,000 price, has caused a few shock waves across the car industry. All the German luxury makers now have plans for their own 200-mile battery-electric vehicles coming in 2018 or later, at various prices. Now at least one maker, BMW, is starting to counter the Model 3 in its marketing—though the Tesla remains more than a year from production. The EPA rates it at 14 miles of electric range, 31 mpg combined when operating as a conventional hybrid after the battery depletes, and a middling 72 MPGe running electrically.MPGe, or Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, is a measure of how far an electric vehicle can travel on the same amount of energy as is contained in 1 gallon of gasoline.BMW has released two new ads that point out that the BMW 330e is available now, today, rather than requiring buyers to wait for the unknown launch date of that unnamed future electric car.
If all had gone to plan, you'd have read this article five months ago.Matching—or even bettering—the published economy figures during carefully managed events is one thing, but would the car live up to the promise of a triple-digit MPGe miles per gallon equivalent in practice, away from the PR people? But there was just one hitch. When the mercury drops that low, forget all thoughts of gas-free commuting. Finally, a growing sense of shame at having left the idea to rot got the better of me, and it was time for a rematch. This time it was a 2017 model painted the same shade of Iridescent Pearl as before; only the all-black interior gave away the fact that it was in fact a different car.
Like Jon Snow, the Fisker Karma was just too pretty to stay dead. The newly christened Karma Revero looks much like the old car, and that s a good thing. In 2011, he launched the Karma, which could drive about 30 miles on pure electricity, then use a gas engine as a generator when the batteries went flat.Justin Bieber, Al Gore, and Leonardo DiCaprio were customers. The US government loaned the company nearly $200 million to advance the environmental cause.A Tesla Co-Founder Is Making Electric Garbage Trucks With Jet Tech, and Why Not
Discussions involving solar-powered, electric vehicles as of late have revolved around Tesla but that s not the only automaker dabbling in the field.Fisker Automotive, if you recall, was one of the first to produce a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. When much of its inventory was destroyed in Hurricane Sandy, however, the company filed for bankruptcy. The company s assets were purchased by Chinese auto parts specialist Wanxiang Group a few months later.Under new ownership, its name was changed to Karma Automotive. On Thursday, Karma Automotive e-revealed pictures and video of its upcoming Karma Revero.
Ferrari's new limited edition LaFerrari Aperta convertible has been launched – to much fanfare – at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.Black with red accents, the low-slung hybrid two-seater is being released for the company's 70th anniversary.Powered by a 6,262cc V12 engine coupled with a 120kW electric motor, the low-slung hypercar goes from 0 to 100km/h in under three seconds, with a top speed of more than 350km/h.Only 209 models are being released to the public, but they've all been snapped up already, despite a price tag of £2m $2.6m .IBTimesUK's Alistair Charlton, who climbed behind the wheel of one in Paris, gives his full impressions of the LaFerrari Aperta here. The Paris Motor Show is open to the public from 1 to 16 October 2016.
By 2012, Toyota s Prius liftback hybrid ruled the alternate energy car market. But the once-novel gas-electric hybrid concept was no longer the innovation du jour.Four years later, Toyota s standard Prius liftback is more efficient and questionably styled than ever, but the hybrid buzz is fading fast. The 2017 Prius Prime, therefore, must either be a holdout tactic or precisely the right move.Under the hood, we ve got a 6.2-liter supercharged V8… Nope, just kidding. The same 1.8-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder from the regular Prius or liftback, in Toyota speak is paired with a larger 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor for a combined 121 horsepower.

Sometimes auto sales are like a street fight, with each opponent shadowboxing the other s every move in a bid to stay competitive. So it is with the 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid compact SUV, a left hook aimed at connecting with Toyota s RAV4 Hybrid introduced the year before. The small hauler is in fact the best-selling vehicle, full stop, in the automaker s North American portfolio, and as such it serves as the primary ambassador to families who might consider adding another Nissan to the driveway as a complement to the SUV.One doesn t make changes to a hometown hero that regularly challenges for the number one spot its segment lightly, but the decision to bring a battery-assisted drivetrain to the Rogue stable was not a difficult one for Nissan.Given the relentless, almost zombie-like push amongst new car buyers of all ages to load up on sport-utility vehicles and shun traditional four-door sedans, the brand knew that there was a built-in audience for a more efficient – and potentially, more refined – version of the Rogue. The 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid benefits from the same re-styling that has been afforded to the gas-only version of the SUV, which is to say it features a bolder front grille, a pair of redesigned bumpers, and a number of small trim updates made throughout its interior.
