But that doesn’t mean Honda can rest on its laurels. With competitors adding hybrid powertrains to their crossovers, Honda is doing the same for the 2020 model year.In addition to the headline hybrid powertrain, the 2020 Honda CR-V gets revised styling and a handful of other tweaks.A 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine works with two electric motors, which take the place of a conventional transmission.Total system output is 212 horsepower.Honda doesn’t have final EPA fuel-economy ratings yet, but expects the hybrid to achieve a 50% improvement in gas mileage over a conventional CR-V.
Honda hasn’t announced the changes it will make to the Ridgeline for the 2020 model year yet, but a dealership in Louisiana might have ruined its surprise.Honda of Covington revealed the crossover-based truck will enter the next model year after receiving a comprehensive suite of updates that includes a restyled front end, and an available hybrid powertrain. The dealership wrote it expects the Ridgeline will receive a gasoline-electric option made up of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and a pair of electric motors. While it doesn’t list technical specifications, the setup it described sounds just like what Honda offers on the Accord, and on the CR-V.It makes 212 horsepower in both cars, but it might offer more in the Ridgeline. To add context, the current truck’s 3.5-liter V6 delivers 280 hp.
The Ferrari SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid is Ferrari's first big step toward electrification, and it shouldn't rankle too many cankles because it also happens to be the fastest Ferrari production car to date.Of course, achieving such a feat means an impressive amount of engineering, which is why Ferrari put together a video giving us more details about how it works.Ferrari this week released a series of videos to its YouTube page, taking looks at various parts of the SF90's creation. One of the more interesting videos covers the powertrain, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 from the 488 GTB with three electric motors to produce a net 986 horsepower. The video starts by reiterating the car's all-electric range, good for about 16 miles and only running through the front wheels.Regenerative braking allows the battery to scoop up a little more charge under deceleration.
Even a 100-year-old automaker like Bentley needs to get with the times. The British luxury brand is known for its adherence to tradition — it still uses an engine based on a 1950s design — but it will soon take a big step toward the future.“We will bring out hybrid versions of all of our models by 2023,” Chris Craft, Bentley board member for sales and marketing, confirmed to Digital Trends and other assembled media at a Bentley test-drive event.Craft also said that Bentley will launch its first all-electric production model in 2025.The move is partly a response to customer demand, Craft said.He said 30% of luxury buyers are interested in electric cars.
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport has broken cover, and the three-row SUV is getting upgrades both in the shape of a mild-hybrid powertrain and a more tech-savvy cabin.Set to hit dealerships in the US this summer, the new Discovery Sport also gets a more aggressive exterior than the regular Discovery.Inside there’s what Land Rover describes as “5+2” seating. In short, the 2020 Discovery Sport is really intended as a two-row SUV – with the second row having a 40/20/40 split along with slide functionality – while two further seats can be folded out of the trunk. As well as leather, there’s also now a Luxtex fabric option that’s made from recycled polyester microfiber.Storage nooks have been increased and enlarged, with new cup holders and more for third-row passengers.
Aston Martin is developing a new hypercar that will launch in 2021, with a production run limited to 500 units. For now, the car is known only as Project 003, as it’s the third hypercar in the works from Aston, following the Valkyrie and Valkyrie AMR Pro twins that are currently in development in partnership with the Red Bull Racing Formula One team.Aston did not reveal many details of the Project 003, which will likely get a real name before it goes into production. The car “will be built around a lightweight structure” and will use a turbocharged hybrid powertrain, a press release from the British automaker said.Aston also promised active aerodynamics with “outstanding levels of downforce” and an active suspension system. That makes the Project 003 sound a bit like the Valkyrie.
p When Volvo introduced the all-new XC90, it blew many away with its excellent styling and quality interior appointments. Now, all that Swedish goodness can be had in a smaller, more affordable utility vehicle. The 2018 Volvo XC60 goes on sale in the US this fall.It will start at $41,500 for the XC60 T5, which comes with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged I4 good for 250 horsepower.Like other new Volvo models, the XC60 comes standard with those gnarly "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, as well as a 9-inch Sensus Connect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.If that's not enough get-up-and-go for you, there are two other engines on offer.
Previewed by a concept introduced at the 2012 Beijing show, the Urus is a hugely important model because it will lure a new category of buyers into showrooms. It was developed as a practical, family-friendly model with a spacious back seat and a big trunk. It’s endowed with the genes that make the Aventador S one of the best high-performance machines on the planet, yet it’s capable of holding its own off the beaten path.It will become Lamborghini’s very first turbocharged model when it breaks cover, and it will later inaugurate the brand’s first series-produced plug-in hybrid drivetrain. We sat down with Maurizio Reggiani, the head of Lamborghini’s research and development department, to get more insight on the Urus, and what it means for the rest of the brand’s lineup.Maurizio Reggiani: As you know, the first version of the Urus will get a gasoline-powered engine; the hybrid model will come later.
p Electrification is spreading across the industry, but it hasn't reached the truck segment yet. That's set to change soon.Ohio-based startup Workhorse has released more information about the upcoming W-15.The model is all-new from the ground up, and it’s largely aimed at fleet buyers. An outlet built into the side of the bed lets users draw electricity directly from the battery pack to power miscellaneous tools.Unique on the market, this innovative feature promises to make noisy, gasoline-burning generators obsolete.
Toyota is the world leader in hybrid electric vehicles, and it is now bringing its resources to the water with hybrid boats.Toyota has developed the first leisure craft in Japan powered by a parallel hybrid system. The hybrid boats will be studied in Tokyo’s waterways from July 2018 to March 2021.It should come as no surprise that the carmaker is experimenting with new hybrid vehicles, as its Prius is the world’s best-selling hybrid electric car.Toyota is lending its hybrid boat, the Ponam-28V, to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government at no charge.According to the press release from Toyota, the government will use the boat to assist in routine maintenance of piers and other port facilities at the Port of Tokyo.
Though it’s a beautiful place to visit, it’s not easy to get to Spain in late winter, and attending MWC is more expensive than buying a new iPhone. Our crack team of mobilers, led by DT Mobile Editor Malarie Gokey, has scoured the halls of the Fira Gran Via.Called simply Concept Truck, the model is an update of a prototype originally introduced in May of last year.Internet access is fast becoming a basic human right, but there are problems with our current delivery systems.Li-Fi, which allows us to access the internet via light rather than the radio frequencies that Wi-Fi relies upon, could open up a lot of bandwidth. This year at MWC in Barcelona, we sat down again with PureLi-Fi COO Harald Burchardt to find out how far the team has come in the last 12 months.
And for the first time in the company’s history, a top-spec model is powered by a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain. In hindsight, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is the model Porsche was referring to when it promised the 918 Spyder’s tech features would trickle down to production cars. Its drivetrain consists of a turbocharged V8 engine rated at 550 horsepower and a 136-horsepower electric motor.Together, the two power sources deliver 680 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque, figures that make the Turbo S E-Hybrid the most powerful series-produced Panamera ever built.More: Porsche is going electric, but the flat-six isn’t going awayAll that grunt is channeled to the four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Powered by a simple, but stunningly effective series hybrid called e-power, Nissan s lowly Note MPV has upset Japan s usually Toyota-dominated sales charts. In January, Nissan s Note became Japan s best-selling car, a title usually monopolized by Toyota s Prius. To make the blamage extra painful: Place two was taken by Nissan s semi-autonomous Serena Minivan. It works as a generator, and buffered through a battery much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than that of a batter-electric vehicle, electricity is delivered to an electrical engine, which now finally sets things in motion.I drove the car a few times in Yokohama, and on Nissan s test track in Oppama, and I liked it immediately.I was not alone; the car became an instant hit in Japan after it was launched late last year.
Major cities all over the globe are asking companies to build cleaner taxi cabs in order to reduce air pollution.Once a common sight in the British capital, the emblematic Hackney carriage — colloquially known as the black cab — has seen its market share erode significantly over the past decade. The London Taxi Company LTC is preparing to introduce a brand-new model in a bid to reclaim its spot as the poster child of England s taxi industry.LTC is owned by Geely, a large, China-based auto-maker whose portfolio of brands also includes Sweden s Volvo. The TX5 was designed from a blank sheet of paper.A gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain represents one of the most noteworthy advancements over the outgoing TX4.
Autonomous driving has become the next major battlefield for the car industry, says Luca Mentuccia, automotive global MD at Accenture. The six levels of automation, defined under international standards by the Society of Automotive Engineers, range from no automation to full automation , explains Sven Raeymaekers, of tech investment banker GP Bullhound.Such services will be safer, reduce pollution and congestion, and will also bring about a paradigm shift in personal vehicle ownership rates, which are likely to decline steeply, he says.Nikolaus Lang, of the Boston Consulting Group s Centre for Digital in Automotive, argues it will depend on the vehicle you re in.However, Lang points out that there s a clear difference between a young urban population, for whom owning cars makes little sense, and the millions of suburbanites with families, who will probably still opt to own.I don t think all of them will be electric by 2030, says Danny Shapiro, senior director at NVIDIA, whose AI computer platform powers the supercomputer in Tesla vehicles.
When it s Audi s Q8 Concept, freshly revealed at the North American International Auto Show NAIAS 2017 today.Around that there s a contrasting-color frame, and then turbine-styled air inlets and an aluminum blade detail to the lower edge of the bumper.Aluminum sills are echoed by more aluminum around the tail lamps, though there s also high-gloss Carbon Atlas on the diffuser.Inside, rather than the seven seats of the Q7, Audi has turned the whole cabin over to cosseting just four people and their luggage. Each seat is made up of individual segments, and there s 22.2 cubic feet of cargo space. As for the technology, there s a Virtual Cockpit display for the driver, with a 12.3-inch 1920 x 720 panel that can show more information than we ve seen before.
Many sports car makers are going to hybrid drivetrains not so much for fuel economy, but to improve performance in many cases. The hybrid drivetrain allows for sports cars to be tuned with an electric assist for low end performance while the engine can be tuned to high-end performance.Lamborghini has stayed away from this trend for the most part and confirmation has been made that the coming Urus SUV will be the only plug-in hybrid in the Lamborghini line. The Urus will be the first SUV from Lambo since the chunky cool LM002 departed back in 1993.The car is expected to debut and go on sale in 2018 and will share a platform with the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga.Lambo plans to fit the Urus with a fancy 48V-powered active anti-roll suspension.
BMW has introduced a fuel-sipping, plug-in hybrid variant of the brand-new 5 Series named 530e iPerformance. For the German brand, the gasoline-electric sedan represents another step toward fulfilling its goal of electrifying every member of its lineup. The 530e s plug-in hybrid drivetrain is built around a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 180 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. It works with a compact electric motor programmed to generate 95 horses and 184 pound-feet of twist.Combined, the two power sources provide 248 horsepower and and 310 pound-feet of torque. The turbo four and the electric motor both spin the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Charge, an Oxford-based electric vehicle company in the UK, is testing its prototypes in the most time-honored way: at the races.Since the dawn of the automotive age, inventors and manufacturers have taken their cars to the track to test their capabilities. These trucks aren t racing, though; they re the official support vehicles for the Formula E all-electric racing series.Formula E provides a particular advantage for Charge: the series uses urban street courses rather than tracks, the exact environment where Charge vehicles will be operating when they re ready for the market.Charge plans to build small delivery vehicles and larger, full-sized trucks to fit a variety of fleet needs. The description of the vehicles seems to hint at a plug-in hybrid powertrain, since the trucks will all be zero-emissions for the first 100 miles, but a dual mode will allow for a range of up to 500 miles via a motor that recharges the batteries.
The crossover is bigger than the outgoing model, roomier, and more rugged, and it s available with a fuel-sipping plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The Countryman shares its modular UKL platform with a handful of Mini and BMW models, including the Hardtop and the X1.The overall proportions don t change drastically, but it s about seven inches longer and an inch wider than the model it replaces.Visually, it stands out with an evolutionary design that s sharper than before, though it s still instantly recognizable as a member of the Mini lineup. The speedometer has moved from the center console to right behind the steering wheel in order to free up space for a large touchscreen, and there are a handful of toggle switches — including a big one that starts the engine — right in front of the gear lever. The extra sheet metal allows the Countryman to offer room for up to five passengers and 30 percent more trunk space than the model it replaces.
