Grabbing your face mask before leaving the house has become as habitual as checking you’ve got your keys. But that could be set to change as we progress through the government’s step-by-step roadmap out of lockdown. When asked if we’ll still need to wear face masks indoors after June 21 – the hopeful end of all social restrictions – England’s deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries said it may be possible to ditch them over summer. “One of the things we know, of course, is doing things outside is ever so much safer than doing things inside – ventilation, we know, is really important,” Dr Harries said during Wednesday’s Downing Street Briefing.“As we get into the autumn, when winter comes in and we spend more time inside, then again we may be looking at it. But it’s quite possible over summer months, as we did last year when we see rates drop, that we would not need to be wearing masks all that time.”Summer is generally “a much safer period for us”, she said, with less need for interventions – but “that doesn’t rule it out as we go into winter periods again”. Dr Harries’ comments follow similar conclusions made by Anthony Fauci, one of America’s top medical advisers, plus England’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance. Anthony Fauci said it was “possible” Americans would still be wearing masks into 2022. Professor Vallance agreed. “Tony Fauci yesterday said in the US he thought that things like masks may be needed next winter,” Prof. Vallance said on Tuesday.“I think we’re in the same position, that it may be necessary next winter to have things like mask-wearing in certain situations.”Despite the optimism of others, Dr Julian Tang, a consultant virologist and expert in respiratory sciences at the University of Leicester, warns against ditching face masks in summer. “Wearing face masks reduces the risk of exposure and therefore infection from inhaled airborne virus,” he says.“With the progressive Covid-19 vaccine roll-out, the chance of virus exposure in the population will gradually decrease, but not everyone will take the vaccine and the vaccines are not 100% effective in reducing transmission – especially with new variants circulating that can partially escape the effect of vaccines.”Wearing masks throughout the vaccination process – even in summer – will help protect people from exposure to the virus, he says, particularly from those in the working age group (18-55 years) and children (under 18s) who haven’t yet been vaccinated.Although risk of hospitalisation is lower in these groups, Dr Tang warns we shouldn’t forget about long Covid complications, which are thought to impact up to 10% of those who become infected – even with asymptomatic or mild initial symptoms.“These long-term complications can be severely debilitating: fatigue, breathlessness, headache, memory loss, mental health issues,” he says.“So even through this adult vaccination period, which is likely to last until July/August, I would really urge people to continue masking, particularly in indoor crowded areas like supermarkets – especially the younger working population who have yet to be vaccinated, or those who need to keep working to support their young families, and cannot afford to suffer from any long Covid complications at this time.”READ MORE:The Vaccine Doesn't Necessarily Stop You Spreading Covid-19‘A 6-Year-Old In A 90-Year-Old’s Body’ – The Children Devastated By Long CovidHere's Why The Official Covid-19 Symptoms List Needs ExpandingThese Needle Phobics Had The Vaccine, Here's How They CopedFeeling Rough After The Covid Jab? Content warning: this article contains description of miscarriage“There’s no fresh blood,” the doctor said with a smile. A good sign, I assumed. Less than two weeks after my positive pregnancy test, I found myself in hospital at 4am, in pain and panicking, undergoing a vaginal examination after experiencing some spotting and cramping. She booked me in for a follow-up scan – an invasive vaginal ultrasound scan, which my boyfriend was luckily able to attend, holding my shaking hand. There, we saw our baby, who we affectionately nicknamed ‘Seed’. It was an amazing feeling. Yet the sonographer was concerned the baby was sitting too low in my womb, and booked another scan for Christmas Eve. By Christmas Eve, I was no longer pregnant. Just days before I’m sitting on the toilet, sobbing, too afraid to look down at the bowl. Because I know I have just passed a heavy, fist-sized clot, and my six-week old ‘Seed’ growing inside me, whose heart would just have started beating, is gone. That second scan to confirm my pregnancy? It would confirm what I now knew: I had suffered a miscarriage. Although, maybe that isn’t right. The brutal truth is I continue to suffer for the effects, and will do for a long time. The anaemia, due to the relentless, heavy blood loss was so debilitating even light exercise left me feeling faint and dizzy. Losing that longed-for life growing inside me was ‘a one day and you’re done’ experience. I’ve suffered from heavy periods in my time, doubling up on sanitary pads and tampons, waking up to blood-stained sheets, intense cramping… but this was all of those in one. A total horror show. Merry Christmas.A month later I was still quite overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted and suffering physically, too. The anaemia, due to the relentless, heavy blood loss was so debilitating even light exercise left me feeling faint and dizzy. I was constantly fatigued by the smallest, mundane thing: having a shower, folding the washing, standing by the hob to cook. I felt pathetic.I was prescribed ferrous sulphate as a result, which caused particularly uncomfortable side effects like constipation – when I did actually poop, it felt like I was passing a giant lump of coal both in colour and consistency. Happy New Year.No one tells you about the awkward embarrassment of leaking through to your jeans after not making it in time to change your pad for the fifth time today and it’s only 11am. No one tells you about the extreme bouts of loneliness and isolation or the waves of anger and confusion. No one tells you that you will aimlessly seek answers to questions no one will ever be able to answer.I’d already started to imagine our lives as a three. What pregnancy symptoms would I get? Would it be a boy or girl? I started browsing mummy blogs on Instagram. I messaged my best friends to share my excitement, ask for pregnancy advice, and enjoy the happy news. And then it was all gone.I’ve been through intense bouts of grief before when my mum died three years ago – in a cruel twist of fate, the anniversary of her death was a day after the miscarriage started – and I know pregnancy hormones are powerful, but this was more than that. I’d sob, face red and blotchy, shout and rant in frustration, clinging on as my loving and wonderful boyfriend silently enveloped me in his arms, pulling me to his chest, rocking me and soothing my pain while neglecting his own.I’m a logical person, but I can’t comprehend how I had become so attached, and how I grieve for our Seed so strongly. And the determined, stubborn guilt and self-blame would peck away, even though I knew the overwhelming chances were that this had happened because of something completely out of my control.I gradually began to feel physically better, upping my exercise intensity, taking longer walks outside and feeling generally less exhausted. And after two or so weeks on the medication, I was ready to stop. But the final, brutal knockout blow, after what had already felt like 12 rounds with Anthony Joshua, was still to come: I had to take a pregnancy test. The reason was simple – to confirm that I was no longer pregnant. It was important, due to risk of infection, to wait four weeks after the first symptoms of the miscarriage to make sure no pregnancy tissue or hormones remained inside my bruised, battered, baby-less body.Of course, the test was negative. A single, lonely blue line without its identical friend. “Okay, we can update your records and send it to your GP now, that’s all we need from you,” the early pregnancy nurse said softly, with absolutely no intention of making it sound so like a business transaction. But that was the reality. I was in the business of becoming a mum, and now my plans had been rejected.Author’s note: I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Early Pregnancy Unit at Ormskirk Hospital for not dismissing my concerns and distress, for their diligent, kind, attentive and thorough care at a time when I was scared and in pain. You’re reading The Waugh Zone, our daily politics briefing. Sign up now to get it by email in the evening. The question of whether key workers should be fast-tracked for Covid vaccinations has been a simmering topic for several weeks. But after evidence to the Commons science and technology committee on Wednesday, will the whole issue now boil over?Priti Patel made plain last month that she wanted police, firefighters and other “front line workers” given greater priority (after Met Police chief Cressida Dick said she was “baffled” why her officers weren’t already). Keir Starmer made a big political play of demanding teachers should get the jab at half-term. The idea is popular too. An Opinium/Observer poll found almost 94% of the public think some workers should qualify for vaccine priority, either alongside or above some older age groups. More than half (54%) backed prioritisation for teachers, and a similar proportion (53%) backed the move for police.Yet thanks to some candour from the deputy chair of the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisation (JCVI), we now know the idea looks dead in the water. In another newsworthy session of the sci and tech committee, Professor Anthony Harnden let slip that JCVI had completed its advice for Phase 2 of the vaccine programme to follow jabs of all over-50s after mid-April.“We have decided it,” he said, clearly taking questioner Zara Sultana and chair Greg Clark by surprise. “It is with ministers at the moment.” And just as importantly, Harnden made plain what the Phase 2 advice would be: stick to priority by age and underlying health conditions, not occupation.A “very careful” look at the data, including the ONS school survey of infection, found that teachers weren’t at any greater risk than the general public, the prof said. In fact there were other jobs with a much higher risk, like noisy meat processing plants where people had to shout and little ventilation. He could have added that shopworkers are also at much higher risk than teachers as they work with adults not low-risk children (but low-paid shopworkers, unlike public sector staff, have few politicians lobbying for them). Still, given teachers are now facing the huge workload of setting exam grades this year, they may continue to think Gavin Williamson has not batted hard for them in Whitehall.Prof Harnden stressed that making age the key determinant for priority was simple, easily understood, deliverable and quick. But he also said “if you start picking out certain groups” according to occupation you slow down the entire programme and “some people will be exposed to the virus and actually suffer harm that there would not have been otherwise”.“Ultimately we need to stick with the science, and you politicians need to decide the other things,” is how Harnden summed up his advice. Given that the government has long said the JCVI advice is paramount, it’s difficult to see how Boris Johnson would risk giving any key worker priority now, not least as choosing one group would open up a can of worms. Jabs not jobs is what matters.Of course, the government’s hope is that the vaccination rollout will continue its rapid progress so much that few people will complain, even cops, teachers, firefighters and others. Everyone over 18 is officially due to be jabbed by the end of July and unofficially government insiders think they’ll be done much sooner.Just imagine if June 21 is not only the day all lockdown restrictions are removed, but also the date by which the entire adult population gets their first dose?Boris Johnson joked at PMQs that Keir Starmer’s inconstant approach to policy on Covid was like a “druidical rocking stone”. But you can bet that if unlockdown is matched by every-adult vaccination on the day of the summer solstice, the PM himself will be dancing like a stoner at Stonehenge.Related...Exam Grades Will Not Be Decided By Algorithm This Year, Gavin Williamson Confirms5 Things You Might Have Missed In The Small Print Of Boris Johnson's RoadmapBoris Johnson Told £700m Catch Up Plan 'Not Enough' To Help Children Who Missed School
Children should not hug their grandparents “too much” even if they have been vaccinated against coronavirus, England’s deputy chief medical officer has said.Jenny Harries stressed that the full impact of the vaccines was still not known as she encouraged families to take a “steady course” out of lockdown. She spoke as parents and children prepared for the reopening of schools on March 8, the first step in Boris Johnson’s plan to lift lockdown.Hugging between members of different households will largely remain against the Covid rules until step three on the “road map” on May 17 at the earliest, when the government has promised to update its advice on social distancing between friends and family.Harries acknowledged that children’s mental health has suffered during the pandemic from being away from their friends at school and being forbidden from seeing “significant” family members. But at a Downing Street coronavirus briefing, she said: “Having got so far down the line with this and now on the road map very, very carefully coming out, I would encourage children not to go off yet, even if grandparents have had their vaccinations, not to go hugging them too much until we are absolutely sure what the impact of that vaccination rollout has been.“I’m sure it’s going to be positive but we just need to take a steady course out through the road map.”Harries also attempted to reassure parents and teachers that schools would be safe due to the testing programme the government is planning for when they reopen.“Parents, grandparents and teachers and other school children can be very assured that schools will be as safe as they can because we are trying to remove infection from that environment,” she said.“And of course that will have a really positive impact on breaking chains of transmission in communities and in those families.”Related...150,000 More People With Learning Disabilities To Get Covid Jab PriorityThis Group Is Holding Its Own 'Public Inquiry' Into The Government's Handling Of CovidPriti Patel Blames 'Mingling' Asylum Seekers For Covid Outbreak At Kent Barracks
