The upcoming Android N release will allow Android to run natively within cars, letting Google put much deeper hooks into the cars it runs on, the company announced Wednesday at its I/O developer conference. It also means that carmakers can incorporate Android directly into instrument clusters. The concept, on a Maserati Ghibli, is also equipped with a 15-inch 4K display and a 720P digital cluster."As they move away from using proprietary systems for infotainment, a big win for them car manufacturers is going to be that the ecosystem that s part of Android will come with that so they don t have to think about, 'How do I go out and make developers write for this proprietary system?'"Of course, it will still be up to individual car companies to decide whether or not to adopt Android, and they will have a lot of flexibility in deciding exactly how they implement it into their vehicles.Even then, we won't be seeing Android N running natively on anything more than a concept anytime soon.
For developers, the company plans to make Android Auto open-source, a move that will let car manufacturers customize the system for their own dashboard controls, from radios to instrument clusters to even HVAC systems.Android Auto is going open sourceDrowning Apple CarPlay in a sea of Android Auto is likely what Google has in mind, and it s inviting automakers to help. These additions will help car makers and other third parties incorporate the source code for native integration into the vehicle, rather than running an entirely separate operating system with Android Auto as an accessory application. If Android Auto is baked directly into cars, that might leave a little less room—and motivation—to support Apple CarPlay.A concept of the software will be on display at I/O inside a Maserati Ghibli. Finally, indeed: We ve been clamoring for this feature since we reviewed the platform last year.
GoogleGoogle announced a huge wave of updates with practical new features and plans for its Android Auto car interface system, including the ultimate dystopian future-reality fear of your phone completely encompassing your car.At today s Google I/O conference, Android Auto got a few big updates as well as a chance to preview the future of the automotive interface in the form of a Qualcomm-modified Maserati Ghibli. The modified Maserati included a new vertical-layout 4K screen, pictured above like you d find in Tesla s offerings, with a digital readout running a specialized interface model called Android Auto N. Also synced up to the Android phone was an HD instrument panel screen, displaying instructions alongside speed directly in front of the driver. The best part is that the Qualcomm system would be open-source, so if you wanted to boot up Apple CarPlay instead and it had the functionality for it you d be able to.Before you had to own an Android Auto compatible car to plug your phone into and use the interface, but the updates fix that. The current system requires the phone to be physically plugged into the car, taking up that coveted charging port.
I sat inside a luxurious, air-conditioned Maserati Ghibli to experience how Google hopes Android N and Android Auto can work in conjunction with one another. But it s a neat concept that could do wonders for propagating the Android platform beyond just smartphones and tablets.Android Auto currently requires that you have a compatible receiver installed inside your car s dashboard and a smartphone running the app.More than half of it uses Android Auto s cards motif, while the remaining portion offers switches for features like air conditioning, seat warmers, power windows, and even a seat massager—a feature I had no idea even existed until I sat inside the Ghibli.First off, notice that the screen produces a lot of glare. This much information behind the wheel seems too distracting.
The car still ran some kind of host operating system, but that OS would move out of the way and let the Android phone use the built-in display like an external monitor.Inside, the Maserati runs a Snapdragon 820 with a 4K display in the center console. The demo car interface looks a lot like Android Auto, just taller. The Android Auto interface sits more or less untouched towards lower half of the screen, complete with the current navigation/app-switching bar you see today. The reps there were very careful to say that this was not a product Google was selling, but a concept the company created to show off Android N's automotive support. There are no plans for a Nexus car.
Along with a whole mess of other neat new technologies, Wednesday's Google I/O presentation brought some news on the future of Android Auto integration in cars.At the conference, new Android Auto features were being shown off on a Maserati Ghibli that was modified by Qualcomm. Both the gauge cluster and the center stack were taken over by two massive screens that were running a software called Android Auto N.Cars that have the ability to run the Android Auto N software can have their screens, like the two in the Maserati, completely taken over by the Google software. But cars that are already equipped with Android Auto tech are expected to get upgrades later in 2016.Those updates will include things like Waze integration finally , voice control by saying "OK Google," and the ability to connect phones to Android Auto via Wi-Fi, instead of by just using a USB cable.Apple CarPlay better step it up.Read the original article on Tech Insider.More from Tech Insider:Google's Android Auto is about to get a lot betterThis app lets you open doors and summon elevators with your phoneThis 'smart' kitchen recognizes the food in your fridge, creates recipes, and then cooks your mealsTesla is updating its summon feature after an owner claimed he crashed his car using itSomeone has already beaten the insanely difficult 'Ultra Nightmare' mode of 'DOOM'NOW WATCH: Here s what the other person sees when you block them on your iPhoneLoading video...
It has long been rumored that Uber wants to take the step from offering trips in other people's cars to make it their own. Discussions are said to be at an early stage, but may culminate in a joint project this year, according to the news site. Fiat Chrysler is the world's third largest car manufacturer and also owns brands such as Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Maserati, among others. At a conference on Wednesday said übers CEO Travis Kala Nick that the company does not have any ambitions to build their own cars. Rather, they seek partnerships with traditional automakers that can account for manufacturing. US General Motors has invested half a billion dollars in Uber competitor Lift, and German Daimler and BMW is in discussions with both Microsoft and Amazon collaborations.

The Maserati Quattroporte has some of the most alluring styling and one of the best-sounding names of any full-size luxury sedan, but the current model is losing ground to German rivals with more up-to-date technology. The 2017 Quattroporte gets a mild restyle and a few new tech features of its own, but will that be enough to hold the line? The most noticeable changes are at the front, where a new front bumper and toothier grille attempt to tie the Quattroporte to the popular Maserati Alfieri concept car.A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 produces 404 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels or all four through an eight-speed automatic transmission.A 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is also available, with 523 hp, 524 lb-ft., and rear-wheel drive only.We ll see how well they help the Italian sedan compete with rivals like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Fiat Chrysler Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is considering adding full electric vehicles to the carmaker s line-up including the Maserati Alfieri sportscar and a small city car."Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV s expansion into the electric car business would follow Volkswagen AG s plans to accelerate efforts to adapt to the industry s shift toward self-driving electric vehicles.Earlier this month, Volkswagen mapped out a sweeping strategy overhaul focused on electric cars, automated driving and services such as ride-hailing in an effort to emerge from the diesel-cheating scandal that s weighed on the company for months.Fiat is considering producing an electric city car for the European market, which would be the first electric model sold in the region, said the executive, who turned 64 Friday.Marchionne said in 2014 that the carmaker was losing at least $10,000 on every 500e it sells to comply with California emission rules.Marchionne also said the carmaker will introduce more hybrid vehicles, including the Maserati Levante sport-utility vehicles. He expects carmakers to offer hybrid versions on most models to meet emission targets by 2021.Maserati, which showed an Alfieri prototype at the Geneva car show in 2014, doesn t plan to introduce a full electric version of the model before the end of the company s five year plan which ends in 2018."I m not as convinced as some others are about the fact that electrification is the solution for all of man s ills," said Marchionne.
Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has been a vocal skeptic about electric vehicles over the past few years. It sounds like the executive is on the verge of changing his mind, however.Marchionne sees room in the Fiat-Chrysler lineup for a high-performance EV capable of keeping up with the Tesla Model S. Developing a battery-electric vehicle from scratch is costly, and easier said than done, so the yet-unnamed model will likely be based on the upcoming production version of the Maserati Alfieri concept that debuted in 2014.The model would be groundbreaking because it would be the first series-produced battery-powered Fiat sold on the other side of the pond.Fiat-Chrysler s top executive made it clear that he s still not a die-hard supporter of electrification. As for the city car, a time frame hasn t been given yet.
The company known for turning Mercedes-Benz models into hellacious hot rods claims to have built the world s fastest and most powerful four-seat convertible. The result is 838 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque, a massive increase over the stock car s 577 hp and 664 pound-feet of torque.Brabus claims the engine actually makes 1,069 lb-ft, but that it had to be electronically limited in the interest of longevity.Brabus claims the 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio will do 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 217 mph.The Hennessey Venom GT Spyder and Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse will go faster, but they only have removable roof panels, not convertible tops.Brabus won t discuss pricing, but don t expect this much speed and power to come cheap.

Huh, File MoreDETROIT AP — Fiat Chrysler is adding 13,000 Maseratis to a recall of vehicles with confusing gear shifters like one in the SUV that crushed and killed Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin. The company says it's adding 2014 and 2015 Quattroporte and Ghibli GIB-lee sedans to the recall under pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The cars have the same gear shifters that caused the recall of 1.1 million FCA vehicles worldwide in April.
When the authorities finally raided founder Kim Dotcom's large villa in New Zealand, they found a number of luxury cars Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls Royce with the license plates "God," "Mafia," "Hacker," "Evil," and "Police."Secondly, I did not know what was going to happen to me if I went to the USA.If anyone had any doubts about a file, Kim always calmed them down and said there was nothing to worry about. There were no walls, just a chain-link fence and barbed wire.I scribbled some plans and specifications for my projects, or watched stupid American TV series. One of them started because somebody switched the channel on the TV.
Just four days after actor Anton Yelchin s 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled back down his steep driveway and killed him, a group of Grand Cherokee owners filed a class-action lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler in a California federal court, according to the Wall Street Journal. As a result, it s easy to be confused about the actual transmission selection, which is allegedly involved with hundreds of complaints to regulators, 41 injuries, and now possibly one death. The lawsuit alleges that the shifter, used in 2012-2014 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler sedans and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees, doesn t have a safety override that other manufacturers use with similar transmissions. The lawsuit seeks restitution for owners and a court order requiring Fiat Chrysler to notify customers not to drive the affected cars and SUVs until the shifters can be repaired.According to the Wall Street Journal, Fiat Chrysler said dealers are getting a software upgrade fix that will put the transmission into park when the driver exits the car.Just last week Fiat Chrysler s Maserati brand recalled 13,000 vehicles that have similar issues.
The success of the Tesla Model S has spurred established German luxury carmakers to plan numerous plug-in electric models of their own.But could Silicon Valley carmaker Tesla Motors soon gain an Italian rival as well?Maserati could eventually get an all-electric model as parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCA reluctantly embraces electrified powertrains.FCA is considering an electric version of its Maserati Alfieri sports-car concept, CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a recent interview with Bloomberg—but wouldn t put it into production for at least two years.Named after one of the five Maserati brothers who founded the carmaker, the Alfieri was first shown as a concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The FCA CEO also said his company is considering a Fiat-badged electric city car for the European market.Fiat currently sells the electric 500e in California and Oregon only; it was built as a compliance car solely to satisfy California s zero-emission vehicle mandate, a demand Marchionne has been very frank about. In 2014, he complained that FCA was losing $10,000 on every 500e it sold, and said more recently that electric powertrains will put too much power into the hands of suppliers.
He s speaking about his role as the newly appointed cycling ambassador for Maserati, which is also the title sponsor of the Tour de Yorkshire, now in its second year. Both are good looking, lightning quick and move with a classy swagger. Both are also going through a period of reinvention: Millar was a disgraced former pro racer who is now a TV pundit and vociferous anti-doping campaigner; Maserati was a builder of expensive, overwrought and fairly unreliable sports cars which is now… well, the change is truly remarkable. For most of us Maserati equals money. And with more affordable, less elitist and cheaper-to-run cars, Maserati may well have a chance. And it s no slouch either – the car has a top speed of 190mph and a 0-62mph of 4.7 seconds.
This certainly includes a number of Europe's biggest luxury brands, like BMW, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Jaguar. But now Italy seems to be finally coming around to the idea, as an electric sports car from Maserati could see the light of day in the next few years.CEO Sergio Marchionne openly stated that it was considering an electric version of its Alfieri concept seen here that was first unveiled in 2014.While the non-electric Alfieri that was originally shown two years ago has yet to enter production, Maserati says it is still on its way.The electric Fiat 500e is already sold in the US, albeit limited to California and Oregon. The CEO says this car is built only to comply with zero-emission mandates, and has complained in the past that they lose $10,000 each time a 500e is sold.
FORDWhen your car is already so exclusive that prospective customers must apply to buy one, apparently there is just one way of making it even more desirable: Make an even crazier version for exactly one person. Now, it s not like the Ford GT needed any improvement.Since its 2012 introduction, Tesla has steadily improved the sleek seven-seater—and the price has gone up accordingly.KindashareplaysaveI am a skip button.WHOOPS!McLaren plans to start deliveries later this year.
It's 2016 and there are no bad cars. But, in the grand schemes of things, the Ghibli is not a bad car — it's just a bit disappointing and arguably worse than its competitors.Until very recently, the 1990s for example, even brand-new cars had issues that buyers would consider unacceptable today. Some suffered from throttle hesitation or inadequate brakes, while others were just generally poorly built and suffered from poor reliability. It was a good car and a strong competitor in the compact luxury sedan marketplace.Granted, the all-new A4 has slightly updated styling compared to the last A4.
