It s based on existing technology, including Google Now.The assistant will power Google s upcoming Amazon Echo competitor, Google Home.Speaking at the beginning of the keynote at the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai described the technology as a conversational assistant that can carry on an ongoing two-way dialogue. We want to be there for our users asking them, How can I help?'Pichai said. The technology is voice-activated and available across devices, but the interface is packaged up inside of a chatbot — something like, say, Facebook Messenger s M. We are getting ready to launch something later this year, Pichai said. The Google Assistant is built into the Allo mobile messaging app, which is also being introduced today.Over the years Google has amassed a whole lot of AI talent and technology. And the systems are regularly improving — last year at I/O Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said Google s speech recognition technology was down to an 8 percent word error rate.Indeed, today Pichai said that 1 in every 5 Google search queries on Android in the U.S. is a voice query. But even though Google s AI technology represents value for the company internally, in the past year Google has shared some of that technology with the rest of the world as open source code. Now it s clear that Google is a few steps ahead of Apple.Earlier this week The Information reported that Google would give third-party developers access to speech recognition, some aspects of the Google Now personal digital assistant, and Android s Google Now On Tap feature for recognizing known entities mentioned in text onscreen and providing explanations and relevant links. While the world s biggest technology companies have been fixated on chatbots lately, the whole idea itself is not new.Voice-activated assistants like the Alexa-powered Amazon Echo speaker are another emerging medium, but currently bots seem more likely to be adopted by the masses.
At its Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, Google today announced that it will be releasing a virtual assistant device called Google Home — later this year. The technology looks sort of like Google s OnHub router, introduced this year. But more generally, it can answer any question, thanks to the underlying Google Assistant technology that was introduced earlier today.A developer preview is available.Google did not disclose the price of the new gadget. The introduction of the product is not 100 percent surprising given recent rumors.Earlier this month Recode reported on the existence of Project Chirp, an initiative for launching an Amazon Echo competitor that resembled OnHub.And earlier this week the New York Times reported on a very similar type of product that carries the boldly expansive name Google Home, saying it would become available to consumers in the fall. But now that Google Home is real, not just a rumor, we can finally admit that Amazon made this market with its line of voice-activated assistants in the form of Bluetooth-enabled speakers. Now the company is going further to bring Alexa into the home — earlier this week Amazon revealed plans to incorporate Alexa voice commands into the Fire TV set-top box.For Google, this is probably one of the most obvious products to come out with — the company just needed a sufficient reason to do it, like the runaway success of the Echo.
This is Google s way of moving beyond the Cardboard headset introduced two years ago. There will be a headset, a controller, and many smartphones that work with Daydream.Google is now working with Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel on phones that meet the Daydream spec, and the first phones will become available this fall, Google VR head Clay Bavor said today at the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California. The controllers, which have their own specification, will also become available this fall. There will be Daydream-compatible apps from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN, HBO Now, Netflix, NBA, Hulu, MLB.com, IMAX, and Lionsgate, Bavor said.Developers can start building apps for it in the newest Android N developer preview, Bavor said.Games will become available from EA and others.Google has fleshed out Cardboard with support for the Unity gaming engine and made it work with Google apps like Street View and YouTube. And in a striking move, Google recently reassigned Amit Singh from the top post in its Google for Work business Apps, Chromebooks, Google Cloud Platform to the VR business, where he is now vice president of business and operations. While companies like Facebook and HTC took plenty of time and got everything in order before launching VR hardware, Google moved quickly to release the simple and low-cost Cardboard that required an Android phone in June 2014, just three months after Facebook announced its acquisition of Oculus VR.Cardboard has gained momentum since then and even got a remodel after a year. Most recently, Engadget and Gizmodo cofounder Peter Rojas published a tweet indicating that Google is working on Android VR and that it would be less powerful than the Vive or Rift. While desktops can provide power to VR systems, Google doesn t have the leadership that Microsoft and Apple do with Windows and OS X, respectively, and one could argue that mobile is a higher priority than desktop company-wide at Google.
Google I/O 2016, the company's annual developers' conference, is set to kick off today 1pm ET, 10 AM PT with a larger than usual crowd and big announcements expected. This will be Google's 10th year hosting the annual conference and to celebrate the occasion, this year's edition will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in its hometown of Mountain View, California. The event will run for three days May 18 - 20 , offering devs an unparalleled environment in which to learn, share and network. In addition to the livestream above, for the first time Google is also providing a 360 video feed.I/O 2016 Updates:
At its Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, today, Google is announcing a new tool for developers to use if they d like their applications to integrate with Google Classroom, a cloud service for handling assignments, coursework, and grades.Learning tools can focus on creating great content, and use Classroom to manage the workflow for assignments created with their content. And the existing Classroom API is getting more powerful — it will be able to work with the Google Drive folder for a given course.Applications can use this new functionality to store files in the same Drive folder as the rest of the resources in a class, or use course groups to manage file sharing permissions, Kupershlak wrote. The enhancements come as other companies strive to make their core products more widely relied upon in the education sector. In March Apple launched a Classroom app for iOS alongside the release of iOS 9.3, and in April Microsoft launched an app called Classroom in preview for Office 365 Education customers.Earlier this month Dropbox, which competes with Google Drive, launched an Education tier.Google has gained share with its Chromebooks, which lean heavily on cloud storage that companies provision through Google Apps for Education.
Google has begun to build its own custom application-specific integrated circuit ASIC chip called tensor processing units TPUs , Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said today at the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California. The name is inspired by Google s TensorFlow open source deep learning framework. When you use the Google Cloud Platform, you can take advantage of TPUs as well, Pichai said.Specialty hardware — sort of taking a cue from the holographic processing unit HPU inside Microsoft s HoloLens augmented reality headset — will not be the only thing that will make the Google public cloud stand out from market leader Amazon Web Services AWS .Also, over time Google will expose more and more machine learning APIs, Pichai said. Our goal is to lead the industry on machine learning and make that innovation available to our customers, Google distinguished hardware engineer Norm Jouppi wrote in a blog post.Building TPUs into our infrastructure stack will allow us to bring the power of Google to developers across software like TensorFlow and Cloud Machine Learning with advanced acceleration capabilities.Machine Learning is transforming how developers build intelligent applications that benefit customers and consumers, and we re excited to see the possibilities come to life.
Every year, Google shows off its latest efforts at Google I/O.The annual developer s conference is the place where the public first hears about the next version of Android, new features of Google s platform and services, new VR stuff, new artificial intelligence products… actually, you can expect just about anything, given the company s penchant for the weird and the surprising.Years past, I/O has been held in San Francisco s Moscone Center, a typical indoor conference space—the same room where Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone. This year, Google has moved its big show to Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. The same stage that s hosted Lollapalooza, Bridge School, Ozzfest, The Grateful Dead, and Phish will this week host Google execs and product managers as they show off their exploits.Watch right here, and follow our liveblog.

With the software s JIT compiler, apps will install 75% faster and the compiled code size will be reduced by 50%.Burke also discussed three ways that Android N will improve security:File-based encryptionMedia-hardening frameworkSeamless updatesThat last one should be especially exciting for Android users, because it means they ll never have to see an update dialog notification ever again. At least, it was the most exciting, until Burke revealed that split screen mode would be coming to both Android phones and tablets. Finally, Burke announced that direct replies will give users the ability to respond to notifications without actually opening the app and Unicode 9 emoji support, with emoji that look less like monstrous blobs.Over 250 new features will be in Android N, which is coming this summer. Thanks to the sharing economy, living in five different cities in five years has never been more doable.
The British are coming … to Google s new Daydream virtual reality platform for mobile.U.K.-based developer/publisher nDreams said today that it s working on two original, unannounced games for Daydream, which Google teased at its I/O event in Mountain View, California.Billing itself as Britain s largest VR house, nDream s first apps are important to help the giant Android and search company establish itself in the mobile VR market and compete against Samsung s Gear headset. And when you add up the potential for VR — $30 billion by 2020 on all platforms, advisory firm Digi-Capital forecasts — it s clear how important getting quality experiences on a new system is to Google. In addition to the two unannounced games, the VR studio is working on The Assembly for PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift, and it s crafting Gunner and Perfect Beach for the Samsung Gear.I m thrilled that nDreams is one of the first studios to support Daydream. With this new platform s announcement, it s that much easier to envisage a time where everyone always has access to high quality mobile VR entertainment, and it s exciting to be collaborating with Google on that ambition, nDream CEO and founder Patrick O Luanaigh said in a canned statement.O Luanaigh is a former creative director at Codemasters and Edios, shipping games such as Tomb Raider: Legend and Hitman: Bloody Money.
It s a voice-activated device that looks like a small bookshelf speaker and acts as a voice-recognizing, intelligent front end to music and other entertainment, everyday tasks like calendar appointments, Google s search engine and home automation systems like Google s own Nest. But while Amazon can offer the world s largest retail store and content inventory, Google has search and its immense knowledge and product ecosystem.Users access the always-listening device, according to a video shown during the I/O keynote address, by saying Okay, Google. The video, which showed a typical family employing the device in the morning rush to work and school, indicated that Google Home is designed to work with devices throughout a house, including speakers, TVs and lights via home automation.Google Home, which will only support one account initially, is intended for release this year at an as-yet-undisclosed price.More than a dozen services are already integrated, including Uber, Pandora, OpenTable, Spotify, WhatsApp and Ticketmaster.

EnlargeGoogleMOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA—Today Google is releasing the third developer preview of Android N, the new version of Google's mobile operating system due this fall.Developer Preview 3 continues to tweak existing features while adding new ones, and stability should also be improved; Google tells us that it considers this build to be "beta" quality, ready for developers and more-ambitious users to use it as their daily driver. One of the largest additions is something we found evidence of in the second preview build: a new Google-developed VR service that will make it easier to turn compatible Android smartphones into modest VR headsets like Samsung's Gear VR.Android N is already using a combination of just-in-time JIT and ahead-of-time AOT code compilation to get rid of the lengthy "app optimization" part of system updates. The new preview is available for the Nexus 6, 9, 5X, 6P, and Player; the Pixel C tablet; the Sony Xperia Z3; and the General Mobile 4G Android One phone.Among its other major features are a split-screen multitasking mode for tablets, the Vulkan graphics API, better notifications, new emoji, and several new UI customization options.
E-ventures claims that it did not breach any of Google's terms of service but instead was hit in September 2014 because of "economic" and "anti-competitive" reasons. The Court finds that this speech is capable of being proven true or false since one can determine whether e-ventures did in fact violate Google s policies. The Federal Trade Commission is said to be examining the Mountain View, California-based company over alleged anticompetitive behavior regarding its Android operating system.Judge Steele did not agree, saying:While publishers are entitled to discretion for editorial judgment decisions, plaintiff has alleged that Google s reason for banning its websites was not based upon editorial judgments but instead based upon anti-competitive motives.Among other things, Google claimed the suit was barred by the Communications Decency Act CDA , which essentially gives Internet service providers a free hand to publish as they see fit. Here, plaintiff has included allegations within its Second Amended Complaint that Google failed to act in good faith when removing its websites from Google s search results," the judge ruled.
