Apple has started trying to convince people in Ireland to get behind an €850 million £648 million data centre that it wants to build in the middle of a forest, according to Galway Bay FM.The Silicon Valley tech giant reportedly told an oral hearing at the Connacht Hotel in Galway on Tuesday that the data centre will pave the way for further development and investment into the area.Up to 100 people reportedly heard Apple say that it is committed to becoming a part of the local community, adding that it will minimise the amount of disturbance. It's not clear which Apple employee s spoke at the hearing.Apple intends to use the data centre — which would be situated in the middle of Derrydonnell Forest near a small town called Athenry, in County Galway, on the west coast of Ireland — to store European user data and to help power online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps, and Siri for customers across Europe.Business Insider visited the site that Apple wants to build on in February and found that most people in the surrounding area are in favour of the proposed development, which could create up to 300 jobs in the area — initially for construction workers but ultimately for IT professionals. However, a number of organisations and individuals are concerned that the facility will have a detrimental impact on the area, with increased flooding and harm to the habitats of bats and badgers, among the concerns.Galway County Council granted Apple planning permission for the first phase of its eight hall data centre last September.Following the approval, 28 parties wrote to Irish planning body An Bord Pleanála to either appeal the decision or make an observation.Up to 12 groups or individuals spoke at the oral hearing on Tuesday, according to Galway FM.The oral hearing is being overseen by An Bord Pleanála inspector Stephen Kay and is expected to continue until the end of the week.It will reportedly address three main issues that were raised in the written submissions: energy and climate change impacts, site selection, and location.NOW WATCH: We dare you to oversleep with Dwayne The Rock Johnson s new motivational alarm clock appLoading video...
A senior director at Apple tried to convince people in Ireland this week to support a gigantic server farm that it wants to build in the middle of an Irish forest.Robert Sharpe, senior director of global data centre services at Apple, provided evidence to an oral hearing that is taking place in Galway County this week, according to a document obtained by Business Insider.Local reports suggest that over 100 people have attended the hearing, which began on Tuesday. In his "opening statement" which can be read in full at the end of this article , Sharpe explains that the €850 million £649 million data centre is vital to Apple's future expansion plans across Europe.Sharpe opens his statement with the following:Around the world, use of the internet continues to grow rapidly; annual global internet traffic is expected to treble over the next three years and more than quadruple over the next five years.Apple is experiencing huge demand for our hugely popular services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay and iCloud; every day our data centres handle tens of billions of messages, more than a billion photos, and tens of millions of FaceTime video calls. Our customers expect to be able to stream their videos and listen to their music wherever they happen to be and they have the highest expectations in terms of speed, responsiveness, reliability and quality. We currently have a number of active devices in use and this number continues to grow.Apple needs to add data centre capacity on a phased basis to provide the necessary processing and storage resources needed to meet this growing number of devices as well as the increased use of current and future devices. The facility would be built in phases over the next 10-15 years."Derrydonnell forest, the site of the proposed development, offers a combination of factors that make it uniquely attractive for a data centre," Sharpe said."It is a large site, currently used for commercial forestry, which sits extremely close to two major high voltage power transmission lines in an area rich in renewable energy resources."The site presents us with an ideal opportunity to develop a very large, sustainable data centre, which meets our projected needs over the next 10 to 15 years."The oral hearing comes after Irish planning body An Bord Pleanála received a number of objections from individuals and organisations in relation to the proposed development.Objections range from the impact the data centre will have on local populations of bats and badgers to flooding impact on a neighbouring golf course. It would have to reapply each time it wants to build another data hall.Business Insider visited the proposed site in February and found the majority of local residents were in favour of the proposed development. Here's the full document:SEE ALSO: Apple's new data centre could become Ireland's biggest energy consumerNOW WATCH: This 14-year-old makes up to $1,500 a night eating dinner in front of a webcam in South KoreaLoading video...
The head of site selection for Apple's data centres denied that a proposed €850 million £646 million Apple server farm on the west coast of Ireland is too close to nuclear facilities during an oral hearing last week.Oscar Gonzalez, who selected data centre sites for Google and Yahoo!before joining Apple in 2013, was questioned by engineer Allan Daly and several others over the data centre's location.Apple wants the new Irish data centre to be at least 320km from nuclear facilities, according to a document seen by Business Insider. In the so-called "witness statement" — where Gonzalez aims to address the extent of the development, the site selection, and the need for the project, before answering questions from a number of concerned parties — data centre opponents questioned Apple on the 320km distance, before highlighting that the data centre site Apple has chosen is in fact less than 320km away from UK nuclear sites.Furthermore, world events such as the failure of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima in 2011 highlighted the need to consider additional criteria. For Apple s proposed new data centres, our aim is to minimise the risk to these very important infrastructure elements and highly valuable assets. In such circumstances, if a site meets the other criteria, the company reluctantly accepts the increased risk. The document also shows that Julie Bates, whose occupation is not known, contested whether Apple's proposed site in Derrydonnell forest is in fact 320km from UK nuclear sites.Gozalez replied: "The Derrydonnell site is approximately 305km from the now-closed Wylfa nuclear facility in Wales and more than 400km from the operating Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant.""The distances to nuclear facilities, military installation and fuel distribution centres are arbitrary, and can be increased or decreased," he wrote.Gonzalez replied: "As explained, Apple s business has grown and developed over time and therefore so too have our requirements for site selection.

Curcumin, found in turmeric, could help protect your body against cancer, with researchers studying how it induces cell death in cancer cells.Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesGoogle recently published its "Food Trends" report, and it s got a lot to offer. These were put into categories of sustained and seasonal risers and decliners as well as rising and falling stars. This means less swelling and pain after irritation or injury. The only problem right now is the lack of bioavailability, meaning that the body doesn t readily absorb the curcumin in enough quantity to become extremely successful. But researchers are currently working on pairing the ingredient with different fat solutions and nanoparticles to improve its uptake in the body and yield better results in cancer treatment.
It probably won't surprise you to hear that some new research has discovered that when it comes to finding new staff members, proficiency with Microsoft Office has become a vital element in terms of the most prized skills employers look for.Highlighting their Microsoft Office skills is one of the most important things job hunters can do according to the IDC study, which put Office at number four in the top 20 most required skills across all occupations not just the tech industry .The three skills which beat out Office were oral and written communication skills – which was number one by a long way – followed by problem-solving, and then integrity not so much a skill as a trait, but never mind .IDC further noted that almost one in eight 12% of what the firm calls 'high-opportunity positions' the best jobs going in terms of predicted growth and wages ask for Microsoft Office-related skills. When you combine that number with the high-opportunity jobs that require Office, this figure grows to almost 20%.Anthony Salcito, Vice President of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, commented: "While over the past three years we've seen the breadth of needed skills for jobs increase by 68%, we've also seen that communication skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and PowerPoint, remain vitally important for success in the workplace."
If a physical object exists in this world, there s a good chance some startup is trying to make it more connected. We ve seen the likes of Oral-B use smartphone apps and built-in motion sensors to purportedly make your cleaning more efficient, but a Chicago-based company called Onvi is taking things a step further by putting a video camera within the toothbrush itself. That brush, called the Prophix, can then take 10-megapixel photos and stream 1080p video of the inside of your mouth, sending it all to the requisite companion app over Bluetooth and WiFi.Apart from giving you a very intimate view of dinner, the idea is to help you better see which spots of your clickers you might be missing on a regular basis. As Engadget notes, the Prophix s brush can be swapped out with three included attachments: There s a rubber tip for your gums, a prophy cup for more involved cleaning, and a small mirror. The companion app is iOS only for now, but the company says an Android version is in development. The whole thing will set you back $400, though if you re in the US, you can pre-order now for $100 less.Either of those seems excessive when you consider how bathroom mirrors and human eyeballs still exist.Regardless, if you re all-in on the internet of everything, or you re really particular about oral health, here you go.Read the original article on Tech Insider.Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.More from Tech Insider:It's cheap and easy to make double-strength cold brew coffee at homeHere's why human women probably struggled to have babies with Neanderthal menThis 'smart toothbrush' streams live video of your teeth to your smartphoneThis 'Brita for your personal space' puts you in a clean air bubbleThis guy is getting $1,250 per month of basic income for doing absolutely nothingNOW WATCH: Sorry Apple fans — the iPhone 7 is going to be boringLoading video...

A 2015 data breach of UK ISP TalkTalk should serve as a warning to the government that its proposed new surveillance legislation risks creating vulnerable pools of data that could be exploited by hackers, a parliamentary committee has warned. It s one example of how the bill would create honeypots of personal data that will present an inevitable target to hackers, such as the pair of teenagers who perpetrated the 2015 TalkTalk hack.In its report into the latter hack the committee notes that during an oral evidence session the UK s data protection watchdog, the Information Commission s Office, issued what it couches as a stark warning about the IP bill.We also received evidence from academics who agreed on this point, the committee writes, going on to urge the government to address the problem the draft legislation will create. The committee suggests that part of the response could be for the government to require enhanced security requirements and background checks for those with access to large pools of personal data .However the party has been largely supportive of ICRs, focusing concerns on the threshold for accessing these records — wanting this to be limited to only investigations of serious crime, not any crime as is currently the case.
