The Trump administration seems determined to take action concerning its irritation with social media networks' supposed bias against right-wing speech, as the White House is reportedly drafting an executive order directing agencies to do something about it.

Politico reported earlier this week that the White House was circulating drafts of a proposed order, but the site couldn't get anyone to describe what was in this document.

Today, however, CNN says it has seen a summary of the draft executive order.

The current draft, called "Protecting Americans from Online Censorship," would put the burden of Internet content management on the Federal Communications Commission, calling on the agency—which has never before dealt with regulation of online content—to develop regulations clarifying under what circumstances social media platforms are protected by the law when moderating content.

It also says the Federal Trade Commission should consider whatever policies the FCC comes up with when it investigates companies for not adhering to their stated policies.

Huawei said an expansion to smartphones could happen sometime over the next three years, but for now, it wants to stick with Android.

As for what HarmonyOS actually is, the company described it as "a microkernel-based OS, distributed OS for all scenarios."

Huawei unveiled more details about its in-house developed operating system – Harmony – and its new user interface – EMUI 10 - at an event held in China in a bid to reduce its reliance on American tech companies, especially Google’s Android.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, speaking at the 2019 Developers Conference said that it intends to continue to use Android moving forward for its smartphones but if not, Huawei is capable of rolling out its new OS within two days.

In May, Huawei was added to the Entity List which halts the ability to do business with US companies.

According to industry experts, there are good chances of its Mate 30 series smartphones, which are to be unveiled in October, to be powered by the new OS if the US ban continues.

Moving forward, Yu said Huawei will lay the foundations for Harmony OS in the Chinese market, and then expand it further to the global ecosystem.

The Trump administration has drafted an executive order that asks the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission to take major roles in policing tech giants over alleged censorship on their platforms, according to a report Friday from CNN.

The proposal, titled "Protecting Americans from Online Censorship," would enlist the FCC to develop new regulations for social media sites over how they could remove or suppress content, the CNN report said.

Representatives from the White House and FTC didn't return requests for comment.

The law shields tech companies from liability for much of the content posted on their platforms by users.

The Trump administration released details of a rule on Wednesday that will officially bar US government agencies from buying telecommunications equipment from Huawei, despite the Chinese firm’s efforts to fight the move in court.

Why it matters: The rule comes after the latest round of trade talks between the US and China ended without a deal, making Huawei, again, a bargaining chip in a stand-off between the world’s two largest economies.

The prohibition cites the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed last year, which restricts the use of federal money to purchase telecom equipment from companies that pose national security risks, which include Huawei.

The ban is also part of a broader US push against Huawei over the fears that Huawei gear may provide backdoors for the Chinese government into American and its allies’ networks.
