Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeZTE is ending “major operating activities,” the company announced today, as its conditions worsen under a US ban on exports to the Chinese phone maker.ZTE says in a filing that it has enough cash to stay afloat while pausing operations for the time being.While the news doesn’t mean ZTE is completely dead, things aren’t looking good for the phone maker.The company says it’s in talks with the US about how to reverse or modify the Department of Commerce’s April decision to ban exports and “forget a positive outcome in the development of matters.” The ban means that American companies like Dolby and Qualcomm can’t export parts to ZTE for up to seven years, which restricts ZTE’s ability to compete with other devices on the US market that have those parts.To replace the loss of Qualcomm, ZTE will receive microchips from Taiwan-based chipmaker Mediatek instead.

A new technology introduced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could boost the power of graphics cards by Nvidia and AMD without making them physically larger.The technology is called wafer-on-wafer, and mimics 3D NAND memory technology used in modern solid-state drives by stacking layers vertically rather than spreading the hardware horizontally across the printed circuit board, which would require additional physical space.Unlike your favorite snack, it’s a thin slice of polished semiconductor material that serves as the foundation for a crisscross of layered copper wires that convey electricity, and the transistors that are the heart of the processor.The wafer and mounted components are cut by a diamond saw into single chips and placed into the physical processor package you see when you break open the desktop.Right now, graphics chips produced by Nvidia and AMD rely on a single wafer.But TSMC, the largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry on the planet, discovered a way to stack two wafers in a single package.

Just yesterday we saw photos supposedly shot by the HTC U12 Plus, and now we’re seemingly seeing photos of the HTC U12 Plus, giving us a clear look at the phone from all angles.The shots were shared on Facebook by HTC Taiwan News and they match up with what we’ve seen previously, showing a dual-lens camera on both the front and back of the U12 Plus (or just HTC U12, as it might be called), a rear-facing fingerprint scanner and minimal bezels, but no notch.The back is very shiny and mirror-like, much as it is on the HTC U11 Plus, and as with that phone there’s no 3.5mm headphone port.In fact, other than likely smaller bezels and the extra camera lenses, the design of the HTC U12 Plus shown looks very similar to the HTC U11 Plus.Where the HTC U12 Plus will probably really differ is in the specs, and while this latest leak doesn’t shed any light on them we’ve already heard rumors that the phone will have a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6GB of RAM and both 16MP and 12MP cameras on the back.Of course, as with any leak we’d take these images with a pinch of salt, but since they line up with what we’ve previously seen they have more than a hallmark of truth.
