Google has flicked the switch on the Australian version of YouTube Red , the twelve bucks a month version of the service that features no ads and allows online viewing. If you pony up you also get access to a clutch of YouTube Originals that extend the output of popular YouTubers and look to be aimed squarely at the youth market.Google also throws in a subscription to its streaming music service and folks who already pay for that get YouTube Red gratis.YouTube ads are an endurable irritant and the Originals are not likely to excite many: your correspondent's 14-year-old progeny thinks YouTube-spawned comedian PewDiePie is old hat, while my 11-year-old's ardour is fading. But Vulture South's team cannot imagine that YouTube Red will scare Australia's incumbent paid video providers Foxtel, Stan and Netflix, or make telcos Optus and Telstra feel like their strategies are weak.Sponsored: Make your system highly available and recoverable using PureApplication system
Poor performance helped kill Google TV, but so did a lack of support from the major networks and other video providers.Google said that many new apps will be arriving on Android TV at some point in the future: CNN, Comedy Central, ESPN, MTV, Freeform, Nickelodeon, Spotify, Starz, Watch ABC, Watch Disney Channel, Watch Disney Junior and many more.It will be capable of decoding 4K VP9 streams at up to 60 fps, with support for HDR10.Android N has tons of new features, but only a certain few really affect Android TVs: picture-in-picture, new recording APIs that will turn Android TVs into DVRs, and HDR support.Google also reiterated that Google Cast, the technology that throws video content from phones and tablets to devices like the Chromecast, would be supported on TVs, displays, speakers, Chromecast, and Chromecast Audio devices.Roku and other manufacturers quickly stepped into the void with products that, while less ambitious, were superior with the core function of streaming video primarily Netflix, in the beginning over the Internet.
You have to wonder what other errors Theranos has that it s going to need to correct. The latest issue surrounding the troubled lab-technology company: It has voided the results of two years worth of blood tests that were done with Theranos Edison blood-testing devices. The Wall Street Journal reported that Theranos has re-issued thousands of test results that it has corrected. The company processed approximately 890,000 tests a year in its labs. You read that right: Two years of blood tests were basically stricken from the record. The company s valuation ended up being based on a technology that Theranos itself had given up on.All of that can t help Theranos case that the doors of its Palo Alto headquarters, and its testing labs, should be kept open. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services are still considering pulling Theranos license to operate labs in California, and have proposed kicking Theranos Chief Executive and founder Elizabeth Holmes out of the blood-testing industry for two years and fining the company, to boot, according to the Journal.Last week, Sunny Balwani stepped down from his president and chief operating officer posts at Theranos rather than face the possibility of a two-year ban from the blood-testing industry himself.Photo: Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes in 2014.
The silent update capability of Chrome OS is one of the operating system s smartest features, as it does the behind-the-scenes work at grabbing the latest software update. One day you'll just fire up your laptop, and you're suddenly running the latest version. In the case of the latest Nexus devices, Google representatives told the crowd at the Android team s office hours event at I/O that the background update feature won t be available for current-generation Nexus devices. That means it s likely that all currently-available Android phones and tablets won t get the feature. Why this matters: This throws some cold water on one of the much-ballyhooed features announced at Google I/O.On the one hand, if you re the type to keep tabs on the latest versions of Android this won t be a major deal breaker, but this new updates scheme is an important tool against fragmentation as it would nudge more phones and tablets onto the latest Android builds.
These hoverboard videos almost never end well. This one starts out innocently enough, with a little girl on a hoverboard as it goes into a gentle spin. This is one thing that you should not do, the spinning girl says in the clip posted by AFV s Kyoot Kids, as another child looks on.The other girl moves in to help but instead the hoverboard zooms off and slams the first child into a wall with a thud.Hey, at least it didn t burst into flames.Previously, the commission issued a list of safety instructions aimed at minimizing the device s potential hazards.
The smartphone keyboard has remained largely unchanged over the past decade, ever since the original iPhone was launched. It does away with the QWERTY keyboard we re used to in favor of hexagon-shaped keys. The app was actually successfully crowdfunded last year after being beta tested with 800 users — research that revealed an increase in typing speed of between 20 and 70 percent compared to standard QWERTY keyboards. It s important to note that while the Wrio keyboard doesn t offer a traditional QWERTY layout, the keys are still roughly in the same place — you ll be slowed down at the start, but it shouldn t be too hard to get used to it.Most punctuation keys have been moved from the primary keyboard to a secondary one, although a few important ones remain, such as the period, comma, question mark, and exclamation point. You ll also be able to access emojis with a gesture — simply swipe up on the key that switches between the primary and secondary keyboard and you ll get access to the emoji keyboard.
During Netflix recent "hack day" has some of their developers have produced a video store in VR where one can relive what it was like in the old days when you actually had to physically get to a video store to rent a movie. In order to use Netflix VR shop requires HTC's VR solution Vive and once you are in the store can navigate their way between the shelves and pick up movies that look like old VHS cassettes. If you want to see a movie that throws it only against one of the store's virtual walls. There are no data on whether Netflix Zone is a project Netflix will continue and actually release to consumers sometime in the future. via Engadget techblog.netflix.com
The Indian government has said that Apple will not be allowed to open retail stores, unless it agrees to its rule of selling at least some locally-sourced products in India.SEE ALSO: Apple's best hope in India is to sell refurbished iPhones, and it's not looking goodAccording to Indian law, all foreign single-brand retailers have to sell 30% of goods that have been sourced locally in order to open stores in India.Initial reports had suggested that the Indian government would waive off the 30% sourcing norm for Apple under this category, but it has failed to be considered as the exception. There is nothing to show that Apple s technology is cutting edge," a government official told Mint. This is the second major setback for Apple in the last one month.A few days before Cook's visit, reports emerged about the Indian government turning down Apple's request for selling or importing refurbished phones due to their threat as e-waste, effectively halting another attempt at increasing its share in India's smartphone market.
Also inside the box is a bright yellow USB cable and a pamphlet of legalese called Bonus Material for Lawyers and Insomniacs. It sort of looks like a big, bright Advil tablet with a cloth face sporting two big volume buttons – a plus and minus that look a bit like a crucifix when you squint. The bottom is a rubberized and ruggedized affair featuring two buttons and a flap that houses the microUSB port and auxiliary jack.Naturally, I tossed the thing around the office a bit, just to make sure. But again, UE s device serves a somewhat different purpose – and at $100, it retails for $150 less than the A1.All in all, none of the improvements over the first unit are major, but they do help the device maintain its standing as one of the Bluetooth speakers best equipped to handed whatever the great outdoors throws at it.
A series of Freedom of Information requests on the state of public toilets in the UK paints a grim picture in urine, up against a wall , revealing that more than 1,782 of our public toilets have closed in the last decade. The data shows that Newcastle and the London borough of Wandsworth now have zero public loos operated by their councils, as the job of providing us somewhere to wee -- and occasionally poo in a bowel movement scheduling emergency -- has been shuffled away from the public purse and into the hands of the coffee shops, pubs and book shops of the nation.Or is a shame we don't have one unified establishment in which to have a piss, buy some drugs and get wanked off by a stranger any more?Something that uses Wi-Fi network proximity to sense you're about to leave home, so asks you to check a box confirming you've done a wee and a poo and won't need to be held, like a toddler, over a street drain to relieve yourself in 30 minutes' time, while mum throws your soiled underwear in the bin rather than carry it home?Drones carrying sacks of piss?So what will it be -- cheap and familiar burger chain?

Microsoft is warning of a wormable ransomware that infects removable drives on versions of its operating system below Windows 10.It drops a warning notice in a HTML file informing victims that their removeable device files are encrypted, and can be decrypted only after payment of $500 in Bitcoins.ZCrypt runs on 64 bit Windows XP relics, and version 7 and 8 boxes that have resisted the Windows 10 upgrade blitzkrieg."We are alerting Windows users of a new type of ransomware that exhibits worm-like behaviour," Microsoft's security team says."This ransom leverages removable and network drives to propagate itself and affect more users."Trend Micro malware man Michael Jay Villanueva says the ransom demand will increase to $2200 over five days if the ransom is not paid.
The Starter Pack will include one Creation Crystal, Golden Queen, Master King Pen, a copy of the game and a Portal of Power. There is also, as always, the Dark Edition Starter Pack, which includes limited versions of all the characters with a metallic lick of paint.Activision has not announced the prices for the Starter Packs as yet, but expect retailers to reveal their own price points for each platform pretty soon.Everything from powers, abilities, catchphrases, appearance and more is up for tweaking, or you can randomize every option and see what bonkers creation the game throws at you to play as.The game takes place a long time ago in the world of Ancients, whom used a mysterious Mind Magic power to build Skylands from scratch. However, if Mind Magic wound up in the wrong hands, it could be a very dangerous tool indeed, so was sealed away to stop it ever being misused.
Shaquille O'Neal is apparently less noticeable than we realized all these years. The NBA legend went undercover as a Lyft driver in a video for the car service. He drives around Atlanta, donning different names, disguises beret, beard , occupations bracelet making , and accents including a hilarious Jamaican .A lot fewer people recognize him than probably should, given that he's a seven-foot giant who looks a lot like Shaq. He's not the best as masking himself. He brings up basketball with his rides and even shows one woman how to practice free throws."My pants get stuck in my butt.A couple riders suspected it, but they freak out all the same.Lyft has done other "undercover" videos, but this is by far the best.NOW WATCH: An in-wall vacuum makes sweeping so much easierLoading video...
View photosMoreAn Uber car is seen parked with the driver's lunch left on the dashboard in Venice, California, United States on July 15, 2015.REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson/File PhotoBRUSSELS Reuters - The European Union executive threw its weight behind the "sharing economy" on Thursday, saying governments should only ban services such as ride-hailing app Uber UBER.UL and Airbnb as a last resort.Although not legally binding, the guidelines are an attempt to set a Europe-wide approach to the fast-growing sector instead of the patchwork response adopted by European cities so far. Some European cities have responded with curbs and bans on companies like Uber and home-sharing site Airbnb which challenge traditional industries such as taxi services and hotels, drawing complaints of unfair competition. The guidelines were welcomed by Airbnb, which called them "a valuable tool to ensure a clear, stable and consistent regulatory environment for sharing economy users across Europe.""Our role is to encourage a regulatory environment that allows new business models to develop while protecting consumers and ensuring fair taxation and employment conditions," he said.
The PS4 is packing four absolutely cracking games: Uncharted 4, Doom, Overwatch and Ratchet & Clank. The Xbox One might have a smaller three game bundle, with Forza 6, Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, but it also throws in a £25 Xbox Live gift card, and a month's subscription to EA Access.Which basically means you get to trial every EA game going; think Need for Speed, Battlefield, Titanfall, FIFA, and more.Plus, you'll still be able to play all the same games on the original consoles - just not with all the whizz bang graphics effects or at 4K resolutions.A PS4 would normally set you back £299, and the Xbox One starts at £250, so by the time you've thrown in the game bundles you're saving about £100 each over buying it all separately. If you're sold on Sony, you can bag a PS4 from Tesco by clicking this link here.
Matt Rourke/APThe Associated Press says Hillary Clinton has enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee for president.Upon receiving the news, the Clinton campaign tweeted a message to supporters in tomorrow s primary states, urging them to vote anyway:We re flattered, @AP, but we've got primaries to win.It found that 571 superdelegates have unequivocally committed to supporting Clinton, while just 95 remain uncommitted. This announcement clearly throws a wrench in the Sanders campaign s hopes of locking up a victory in California tomorrow and convincing some of Clinton s superdelegates to vote for Sanders instead, forcing a contested convention. In recent weeks, Sanders has been focusing all of his energy on California, including a major San Francisco rally tonight featuring some of the Vermont senator s celebrity backers. As Sanders supporters gathered under cloudy skies with the Golden Gate Bridge looming in the background, the mood was festive and defiant despite the AP s call.

If you ve seen both Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, then you know that the first one sets up a possible relationship between Agent 13 Emily VanCamp and Steve Rogers Chris Evans , and the other just throws that relationship together out of nowhere.Well, Hayley Atwell has weighed in.Of all the weird things from the comics to keep, the Marvel cinematic universe has decided that Captain America s modern day love interest, Sharon, is the niece of his 1940s love interest, Peggy Atwell .I just feel that, you know - I wouldn t want to date my great aunt s guy.It s like, don t touch that.Atwell even made a very timely reference to the current comics version of Steve, adding, She d want the best for her and she d want her dating a good guy.
