p Did Nasa astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin really walk on the moon in 1969, or was it part of an elaborate ruse directed by Stanley Kubrick? Are aircraft leaving 'chemtrails' in the sky, chemical agents sprayed for mysterious and nefarious purposes? Is there actually a cure for cancer, suppressed by pharmaceutical companies in order to protect valuable 'alternative' medicines?Unfortunately for the more imaginative conspiracy theorists among us, the answer to all of these questions is likely to be a resounding no.The equation, which has been published in Plos One, is made up of three factors: the number of conspirators involved, how much time has passed since the alleged conspiracy took place, and the "intrinsic probability of a conspiracy failing".This intrinsic measure was estimated by looking at data from conspiracies that had later been revealed to be true – the PRISM surveillance program, which was revealed by Edward Snowden after several years, the Tuskegee syphilis scandal, which withheld the cure for syphilis from African-Americans and was revealed after 25 years, and an FBI scandal which led to the execution of innocent people, unveiled by a doctor after six years.

Expedia Inc. s chief executive officer is expecting more company in the world of online travel booking, predicting Facebook Inc. will follow Google into the business.Facebook is already working on e-commerce, letting users save their payment information on the social media giant s site and purchase products they see advertised there directly through buy buttons.Google now lets users book trips and lodging directly through its search engine, a feature the U.S. Justice Department cited when it approved Expedia s takeover of Orbitz last year, saying Google was increasing competition. The development would bring both risks and opportunities for Expedia and rivals, Khosrowshahi said. For years, hotel companies have tried to find ways to drive more sales through their own websites so they can avoid the premiums paid to the likes of Priceline and Expedia when customers book lodgings and trips through them.If Facebook pushes into travel booking it will most likely follow Google s lead, building a tool that lets hotel chains and online travel agents show up in search results on the social network, Dan Wasiolek, an analyst with Morningstar Inc., said in an interview. This new targeted advertising platform in theory is supposed to offer a better way to target travelers when they re planning a trip and when they re in the destination, Henry Harteveldt, founder of the travel industry research firm Atmosphere Research Group, said in an interview.Travel companies including Hyatt Hotels Corp. and Air France-KLM are using Facebook s Messenger application to talk to customers. So is Expedia, said John Morrey, vice president and general manager of Expedia U.S. That s another area that Facebook could expand its presence in, Harteveldt said, either by getting more companies to do business on Messenger or building its own booking tool in the app.Expedia, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last week, went on a $6 billion acquisition spree in 2015 by buying Orbitz and vacation rental company HomeAway.Startups like GetYourGuide GmbH, Vayable Inc. and Peek Travel Inc. have raised venture capital for their own tour-booking websites and applications.

On Tuesday, the bomb squad to investigate a suspicious package exported close to a third of the mast. - I would estimate that this is an international connection, the Swedish Defense University analyst Hans Brun says the Swedish radio. Mastosabotaasista news about the newspaper Dagens Nyheter recalled the Swedish security services previously warned that Russian agents have mapped the critical infrastructure in Sweden.
Photograph by Elliott Brown via FlickrThe only court where you may appeal our spies' illegal activities in the UK has finally published a report covering its activities from 2011-2015, defending itself against accusations that it is a star chamber which always meets in secret and never rules in favour of complainants .Obliged to hear two particular complaints against the intelligence agents, the IPT receives applications from those who believe they have been the victim of unlawful interference by public authorities using covert techniques regulated under RIPA, and those who believe they have been the victim of a Human Rights violation conducted by the spooks. Its creation followed the passing of the Human Rights Act 1998, after which it became necessary to ensure that the UK met Article 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights ECHR which states:Everyone whose rights and freedoms as set forth in this Convention are violated shall have an effective remedy before a national authority notwithstanding that the violation has been committed by persons acting in an official capacity. While holding hearings in camera is not unheard of in English courts — especially for the purposes of protecting children — the practice of protecting the intelligence agencies from the attention which attends public trials has some under criticism following the disclosures made by rogue NSA sysadmin Edward Snowden, which revealed illegal activities had taken place under the existing regime. Not a single complaint brought to the tribunal regarding the security and intelligence agencies' surveillance activities had been upheld until supported by the documents leaked by Edward Snowden in 2013.This means that without making any decision in the first instance as to whether the facts alleged by complainants are true, where appropriate the Tribunal invites the parties to formulate and agree issues of law for the Tribunal to decide upon the assumption that they are true This has enabled hearings to take place in public with full adversarial argument as to whether, assuming the facts, any such conduct as a claimant alleged to have occurred, by, for example, the SIAs, would have been lawful.
Eric ConstantineauSen. Ron Wyden D-Ore. and other like-minded senators have come out forcefully against the pending change to federal judicial rules that would expand judges ability to authorize remote access hacking of criminal suspects devices. The entire bill is one sentence long: The proposed amendments to rule 41 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, which are set forth in the order entered by the Supreme Court of the United States on April 28, 2016, shall not take effect. For now, Rule 41 allows these junior judges to authorize electronic searches only within their own judicial district. He wrote:For law enforcement to conduct a remote electronic search, they generally need to plant malware in — i.e.To me, that s clearly a policy change that s outside the scope of an administrative change, and it is something that Congress should consider. For example, if agents are investigating criminals who are sexually exploiting children and uploading those videos for others to see—but concealing their location—agents will be able to go to court to obtain a warrant to discover where they are located.
Uber has lured former U.S. Secret Service director Mark Sullivan to join its safety advisory board, a group established by the etaxi giant six months ago, designed to bring together expertise and experience from across the safety spectrum.Sullivan joined the Secret Service in 1983 and served as director from 2006 until his retirement in March 2013 after which he cofounded his own security company.Reports also emerged that Sullivan had pulled agents off their posts onto a new assignment, known internally as Operation Moonlight, to monitor his assistant who was reportedly being harassed by her neighbor.Uber itself has been at the center of a number of security and safety concerns in recent times, which is why it created roles such as Managing Counsel of Data Privacy and Head of Global Safety, and last year it hired Joe Sullivan no relation to Mark as its first chief security officer.Sullivan joined from Facebook where he served in a similar role for five years.Last August, Uber hired renowned car-hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, a duo who had demonstrated how they could hack into a moving Jeep, and just yesterday Uber announced its first official self-driving car tests are to take place in the coming weeks.Nabbing the former Secret Service director for its board could be construed as a major coup for Uber s safety credentials, despite the controversy that surrounded Sullivan s tenure. As we continue to innovate and grow, we depend on the advice of this safety advisory board to help guide our creativity and give us insights into their fields of expertise —  ranging from women s safety to law enforcement, said Joe Sullivan. For 35 years, Mr. Sullivan served in many capacities as a Federal Law Enforcement Agent where he led high impact initiatives in criminal investigations and protective operations, threat assessment and risk management.Mark Sullivan joins existing board members John Barton, former executive director at the Texas Department of Transportation; Ed Davis, a former Boston Police Commissioner; Jessica Eaglin, Indiana University Bloomington, Maurer School of Law; Margaret Richardson, Counsel at Covington Burling; and Cindy Southworth, executive vice president, National Network to End Domestic Violence, founder of the Safety Net Technology Project and board member of the Global Network of Women s Shelters.Today s news comes less than a month after Uber appointed the Huffington Post s Arianna Huffington to its board of directors, a move that was controversial in its own right given the potential conflict of interests it poses in her role as head of a major media outlet.

Sarin nerve gas used in a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway 1995. Progress has been made in the search for new drugs against poisoning by nerve agents such as sarin, according to a study from the Swedish Defence Research Agency, Umeå University and researchers in Germany. - We have made a breakthrough discovery that opens up great opportunities for future research to develop new antidotes against nerve gas poisoning, says Anna Linusson, professor at the Department of Chemistry at Umeå University, the Echo on Swedish Radio. The volatile nerve agent sarin symptoms including shortness of breath, vomiting, and visual disturbances. The researchers have now been able to show how the nerve gas can be removed from the affected protein acetylcholinesterase. The study is published in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
British Salesforce customers have been disproportionately hit by a price hike of the cloudy business' enterprise CRM system. The price for its Lightning Enterprise Edition software in the US increased by 20 per cent to $150 £103 per month, while in Blighty prices rose 41 per cent to £120.One customer got in touch with The Register to say that Salesforce has been keen to stress the new product contains more features "which is fair enough to a point but nothing mentions anything about a disproportionate UK price increase."Last week the 17-year-old loss-making biz bounced back into the black for the first three months of 2016, its first quarter of fiscal year 2017, reporting net income of $38m £26m .Revenue rose 26.8 per cent to $1.91bn £819m .Service Cloud Lightning empowers your agents to make your customers love you, and Field Service Lightning expands this power to your field service technicians."
It is increasingly difficult to get human agents in certain situations because of the international nature of some of the threats. The development of human resources for these tasks, she added, is not as easy as it was decades ago.Our conversation then segued to Facebook, the biggest social networking website that knows almost all about its 1.6 billion members, something that even the FBI of Edgar Hoover and the East German Stasi were only able to dream of.They would have been "very confused" by the sheer amount of data being collected smirked Dame Rimmington."It is very difficult to imagine the people of the 1960's being faced with today's technological world because they wouldn't have understood it".I met with Dame Stella Rimmington at IP Expo in Manchester, where she was the keynote speaker.

A bombshell trade report lands next month which will reveal the level at which US advertising agencies accept rebates from media companies, and whether those agencies are transparent about disclosing them and passing them back to their clients, sources told Business Insider. The report, commissioned by advertiser trade body the Association of National Advertisers ANA , is set to be more "explosive" than many people in the industry were prepared for, these sources say, because it will lay bare the practices media agencies use to make hidden margins on their advertising buys.Any indication that cash is instead being siphoned into schemes that only benefit agencies will cause trouble. One source, who is aware of the report's findings, told Business Insider there have been suggestions of the possibility of "jail time" for executives found to have been deliberately in breach of their contracts. Why this is an issueMedia agencies are paid by advertisers to secure them the best and most efficiently priced advertising slots. However, one of the issues is whether buying agencies are actually securing the most strategic slots for advertisers, or whether they've made a previous agreement with a media owner to spend a set amount of their clients' ad dollars in order to receive a rebate. That's the benefit of working with a big global agency, as opposed to a smaller independent — and if clients are unhappy, they shouldn't sign the contracts.Business Insider does not yet know precisely which — if any — of these nontransparent practices the report will address, but sources told us the impact of the report's findings will be huge.A quick recap on the story so farThe controversy surrounding media agency rebates was thrust into the spotlight in March last year at the annual ANA conference.Jon Mandel, the former CEO of WPP media agency MediaCom, stood on stage and alleged agency kickbacks are still "widespread" and cited them as one of the reasons he left the industry.WPP s Martin Sorrell says firmly that media kickbacks are not a factor in America: There are no rebates in the U.S. CannesLions — Adweek @Adweek June 26, 2015In October last year, the ANA hired two firms to investigate the media rebates and transparency issues plaguing the sector. One of those firms is K2, an investigative consultancy staffed by former FBI agents and founded by "father-son detective duo" Jules and Jeremy Kroll.Jules Kroll founded the Kroll Inc. private security and intelligence empire.More than 70% of global advertisers and agencies surveyed by ID Comms agreed the way in which rebates are handles remains the biggest barrier to building long-term trust, as Marketing Week reported.Graham Brown, a director at global media advisory firm MediaSense, said he hopes the report isn't made into a "tabloid press issue" — not least by consultancy firms that could gain business if the report manages to find malpractice — and instead helps marketers decide how important the relationship is with their agencies and whether they want to make it better, or review it.
The Trustworthy Accountability Group TAG announced Monday that it is launching its Certified Against Fraud certification program.Initially announced in October, over thirty ad tech and agency partners have now signed on to participate in the initiative aimed rooting out fraud in digital advertising: Amobee, AppNexus, Collective, comScore, DoubleVerify, Dstillery, engage:BDR, Exponential, Forensiq, Horizon Media, Index Exchange, Integral Ad Science, Interpublic Group, MediaMath, Moat, ndp, News Corp, Omnicom Group, OpenX, Publicis Worldwide, RhythmOne, Rocket Fuel, Rubicon Project, Sociomantic, sovrn, SpotX, TubeMogul, White Ops, WPP, Yahoo, and Zemanta. As more TAG anti-fraud seals are awarded, the cracks in our industry exploited by bad actors will also be sealed against their criminal endeavors.Advertisers, authorized advertiser agents and other direct buyers must have a designated TAG compliance officer and comply with the Media Rating Council s Invalid Traffic IVT Detection and Filtration Guidelines.Ad networks and other indirect buyers and sellers must also fulfill all steps required of buyers, domain list filtering, data center IP list filtering, and TAG s Payment ID protocol.Every dollar spent on a fraudulent ad is a dollar that is stolen from marketers, said Bob Liodice, President and CEO of the Association of National Advertisers ANA .
