It's Borg Bug Day, and this week Cisco's issued patches of interest to users of its Adaptive Security Appliances ASAs .The two newly-announced bugs are CVE-2016-1379, a VPN block memory exhaustion vulnerability; and CVE-2016-1385, a problem with the ASA XML parser. The software has a bug in how it handles ICMP errors in IPsec packets, and crafted packets sent either through LAN-to-LAN or remote access VPN tunnels can deplete available memory .That results in a denial-of-service, either because the system becomes unstable or it stops forwarding traffic. The software is vulnerable if the user's using IKEv1 or IKEv2 for LAN-to-LAN VPNs, or remote access VPNs using Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol and Ipsec; and if the system is validating ICMP errors. The XML parser vulnerability is less serious, because it can only be exploited by an authenticated user.
As the rumours predicted, Google used the opening presentation of its annual developer conference, I/O, to reveal a new personal assistant aimed at the home.Called Google Home and voice-activated with the entire power of Google s search engine built into it, Home is set to launch later this year. The device connects to your home WiFi network and can also sync with Chromecast devices, meaning it can control TVs as well as other connected devices including speakers and smart appliances. The device has a striking similarity function-wise to Amazon s Echo, which launched last year – something even Google CEO Sundar Pichai referenced when announcing the device. At the heart of Home is the updated and supposedly more intelligent Google app software and the new Google Assistant. This is said to be better at understanding context and able to offer better proactive suggestions to users as a result.

As the product of £50 million worth of research investment, you can see why the Dyson dryer costs nearly twice as much as its salon-grade rivals from other manufacturers. The humble fridgeSamsung have stepped up to the plate with their Family Hub fridge-freezer, which is a great deal more than the 'tablet embedded in a fridge door' models that are currently emerging. And then there's the fact that the fridge can source recipes, share notes and sync multiple calendars, allowing family members to identify the best times to shop and eat together. You can then access those photos from the supermarket to scan for any missing essentials although the doors are out of shot, making harder to spot the holy grail of fridge content: milk .The unassuming kettleThe electric kettle was a big step forward for committed tea drinkers, but purists will tell you that although it speeds up the process, it doesn't guarantee a decent cuppa.Lucky, then, that a student from the Indian Institute of Technology is shaking things up with a tea-making app that schedules your kettle to boil and controls the temperature to which the water is heated.

Analysis: The good news keeps rolling in for Salesforce as profits rise.Well, technology is the backbone of everything, but for a conference keynote it was enjoyably lacking in product pitching, at least not in the typically manner. The show was all about enablement and helping others to reach their customers better, which is why the company took a long time focusing on customer stories - this took up about 80% of the hour and a half presentation.Polly Sumner, chief adoption officer, Salesforce, took control of proceedings and set the tone early on by saying: "The tech isn't important, what's important are the people connecting to it."Yes there were remarks about how the Salesforce tech has enabled businesses to better serve customers, and there were the obligatory live demos role-playing buying an Aston Martin and having a high-fiving robot were good ideas but it simply didn't have the same feel as an EMC talking about its new appliances for two hours.By using its technology, STEMettes has been able to more closely help young girls to build a foundation to break into the science, technology, engineering and maths.

Good chai is transcendent.Every person has their method of preparation—a ritual after years of boiling and reboiling the ingredients until they coalesce into the drink.Gaurav Chawla, founder and CEO of Chime, had his own method but sometimes worried he spent too much time watching the chai boil and not enough time doing other things, so he cracked open a few home appliances and rigged up his own automated chai maker.Places like Starbucks sell something that is, technically, chai, but it s usually an overly sweet mess of boxed pre-brewed black tea and spices mixed with some milk and steamed. It s all pretty effortless—even if the device itself is still large and clearly in a pre-mass production stage, with cheap looking finishes and a milk pan that still requires scrubbing to clean Gaurav assures me that the production model will be non-stick for easier cleaning .When asked why he was starting in the US instead of the much larger chai drinking market of South Asia, Gaurav chuckled.

First, there were single-cup coffee brewers that followed and claimed to be better than Keurig, from Nespresso, Mr. Coffee and Lavazza to name a few.Later came cold drink machines like the Bartesian for cocktails, or PicoBrew for craft beer.Camellia Labs, founded in 2014 by CEO Guarav Chawla and Samip Bhavsar, recognizes that coffee isn t king the world over.Camellia Labs created a single-cup brewer for chai, and sees a huge potential market in the South Asian diaspora in North America.Real chai is a completely different thing than the watery imitations and sweet, boxed or powdered mixes that pass for a chai or chai latte at most U.S. coffeeshops, including Starbucks, the cofounders said.IMAGE HAS BEEN MODIFIED
There is a focus on advanced motion tracking, so all kinds of technologies can be used without the need to touch it physically. Soli utilize radar to sense both the movement and distance. The technology can be integrated into mobile phones, for example, panels and household appliances, but also in smaller devices like smart watches. Power consumption has been reduced as much as 22 times from 1,2W down to 0,054W, while the computational power required to read and interpret the gestures reduced 256 times. LG and Harman have received early access to Solingen. next year, but it will be some time before the technology reaches consumers.
As we witness what may be the final days of Yahoo as an independent business, consider how just a decade ago it was running neck-and-neck with Google, now one of the world s largest companies by market value.I began working for Google in 2003, at a time when the two tech giants were competing vigorously to dominate the rapidly growing territory of World Wide Web.Instead of using the latest storage appliances as a foundation, the Google File System used commodity servers to support a flexible and resilient architecture that could solve scalability and resiliency issues once and for all, simplifying and accelerating the future rollout of a wide range of web-scale applications, from maps to cloud storage.Scaling complexityIt took four years of ongoing development, and enormous amounts of engineering resources, before the Google File System reached the point where the company used it for mission-critical operations. When you visualize a problem, start from scratch.Whether you re an engineer or an entrepreneur or both , close your eyes to existing solutions and ways of doing things, ignore what has been done before and build your ideal solution.
The smart home market is one where competition has become fiercer over the last 24 months, but the battle for the cleverest AI butler is only just starting.Echo works with devices such as lights, switches, thermostats, and more from WeMo, Philips Hue, SmartThings, Insteon, Nest, ecobee, and Wink.It offers full remote presence, has smart appliances control including lights, locks, thermostats and others, and can also perform CCTV functions with a camera capable of shooting any angle. The startup managed to raise over $111k on Indiegogo by September last year, and said that if the campaign reached $100k, it would also built in virtual reality capabilities into the sphere. The idea came from Dr Cynthia Breazeal, an MIT professor and expert on social robotics.Google Home has been designed from scratch to be interoperable with other Google smart home products and devices from other vendors.
