This is where agricultural biology comes into the picture by utilizing various biological techniques for sustainable and eco-friendly farming. Biofertilizers and BiopesticidesOne of the major areas where agricultural biology contributes is through the application of biofertilizers and biopesticides. Similarly, biopesticides contain microbes like bacteria, fungi, virus or beneficial insects that control insect pests and diseases of agricultural crops. Tissue culture techniques are also used for rapid multiplication of desease-free, true-to-type planting material of various crops. There is a need for collaborative global efforts and interdisciplinary approaches to fully realize the potential of agricultural biology and ensure sustainable agricultural development.

Ecosystem Services: The Backbone of Biodiversity in Farmland ManagementThe importance of biodiversity in farmland management lies in its provision of essential ecosystem services. The Economic and Social Value of BiodiversityBeyond its ecological benefits, biodiversity in farmland management holds significant economic and social value. Challenges and Solutions in Biodiversity Conservation in Farmland ManagementDespite its importance, biodiversity in farmland management faces numerous threats, including agricultural intensification, expansion of monoculture farming, habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. Conclusion: Embracing Biodiversity for Sustainable Farmland ManagementBiodiversity is indispensable for sustainable farmland management, as it sustains agricultural productivity, supports ecosystem services, and enhances the resilience of agricultural landscapes. Preserving biodiversity in farmland management is a paramount priority as we strive to feed a growing global population while safeguarding the natural world.

The process is considerably simple: carbon is released into the air in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2), through different mechanisms such as respiration, organic residue decomposition and burning of fossil fuel; and nature stores it back in the oceans and in the form of soil organic carbon. What is meant by soil organic carbon? Studies show that soil carbon sequestration can be enhanced in management systems which add high amounts of biomass to the soil, causes minimal soil disturbance, while preserving water, increasing soil structure and enhancing activity and diversity of species in soil. While some management systems help improve soil carbon sequestration, conventional agricultural practices â€“ such as using fertilizers containing chloride or high salt index â€“ can not only jeopardize carbon sequestration, but also cause soil to release more carbon back to the atmosphere. Microorganisms, microfauna, mesofauna, macrofauna, and megafauna are part of the complex ecosystem within soil, and they all contribute to improving and modifying soil organic carbon, directly or indirectly.

Tree Works Permits Trees are a part of Kingston’s character.

We're naturally committed to conservation and protection of trees, especially large canopy trees that take many years to mature.

In line with the State Government’s Biodiversity Strategy, we're aiming for no further net loss in canopy cover throughout the city.

Permit Requirements A Local Law permit is needed to remove, prune or undertake works to any tree (including multi-stemmed trees) with a trunk circumference of 110cm or more measured at ground level.

Further, a local law permit is also required to undertake works within the critical root zone of any significant tree or vegetation.

It is an offence under Local Law 5 Clause 40(3)(a) - (Protection of Trees and Vegetation) to remove, damage, kill or destroy any tree or vegetation.
