Groupon today announced that itâs purchased Presence AI, a San Francisco-based company developing a communications platform that automates business-to-customer calls and messaging.
The terms of the deal werenât disclosed, but Groupon chief product officer Sarah Butterfass said that Presence AIâs portfolio will complement Grouponâs existing booking products and help to âaccelerateâ its development roadmap.
Presence AI â a member of the 2018 Alexa Accelerator cohort â had attracted $20,000 in seed funding from investors, one of which was Amazonâs Alexa Fund.
âWeâre pleased to welcome the Presence AI team and their booking technology to Groupon.
Booking is a key part of our voucherless initiative aimed at improving the redemption experience, providing always-on availability, giving consumers more reasons to buy through Groupon and opening up our marketplace to a broader range of merchants,â said Butterfass in a statement.
Presence AI, which was founded in 2015 by Michel Meyer, provides a configurable virtual assistant that integrates with health, beauty, and wellness merchantsâ scheduling software to accept and manage bookings.
Glow is a new startup that says it wants to help podcasters build media business.
Thatâs something co-founder and CEO Amira Valliani said she tried to do herself.
After a career that included working in the Obama White House and getting an MBA from Wharton, she launched a podcast covering local elections in Cambridge, Mass., and she said that after the initial six episodes, she struggled to find a sustainable business model.
Valliani (pictured above with her co-founder and chief product officer Brian Elieson) recalled thinking, âWell, I got this one grant and Iâd love to do more, but I need to figure out a way to pay for it.â She realized that advertising didnât make sense, but when a listener expressed interest in paying her directly, none of the existing platforms made it easy.
âI just couldnât figure it out,â she said.
âI felt an acute need, and I thought, âAre there other people out there there who havenât been able to figure out how to do it, because the lift is just too high?
