So far, BMW's like this M2 have shied away from purely autonomous driving.Sixteen years ago, a small low-power chip startup called Transmeta forced Intel to retool its desktop PC processors to meet the demands of notebooks.Intel has joined forces with Mobileye—the former brains behind Tesla Motors autopilot system—and auto parts maker Delphi, according to several reports.Later Intel will use a more powerful and unnamed processor to be unveiled in a few weeks —presumably at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.Intel announced a $250 million commitment to self-driving cars earlier this month, as part of a pledge to make fully autonomous driving a reality, according to a statement by chief executive Brian Krzanich.Intel and Mobileye have also agreed to work with BMW to help get a self-driving car on the road by 2021.
Faraday Future, the Chinese-backed electric car startup that unveiled a 1,000 horsepower concept car at CES 2016, could be in hot water if recent comments from a government official in Nevada prove accurate.Around this time last year, Faraday Future was scouting multiple locations to build a $1 billion electric vehicle production facility. The company ultimately elected to build in Nevada and held a groundbreaking ceremony this past April.AECOM, lead contractor on the job, confirmed to Jalopnik a couple of weeks back that it has stopped construction of the massive facility, adding that Faraday Future plans to resume construction in early 2017.In October, it was reported that Faraday Future had fallen behind on its payments to AECOM.Nevada State Treasurer Dan Schwartz told Fortune earlier this month that the whole thing is a Ponzi scheme, adding that you have a new company that has never built a car, building a new plant in the middle of the desert that s being financed by a mysterious Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting .
Gaming fans continue to drive a significant chunk of online spending through the gift-giving holidays, and Sony and Microsoft are both benefitting from that.Sony s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling consumer electronics product online on Cyber Monday, according to data-tracking firm Adobe Digital Insights.Cyber Monday is the first Monday after Thanksgiving, and it is one of the biggest days of the year for online shopping as people spend their lunch breaks looking for deals on Amazon, Walmart.com, and elsewhere.Coming in right behind the PS4 was Microsoft s Xbox One as the No.2 best-selling piece of electronics.Together, the two consoles outperformed Samsung 4K televisions, Apple iPads, and Amazon s Fire products.Xbox One actually outsold the PlayStation 4 online on Black Friday, according to Adobe, but Sony s console is still ahead for the entire month of November in the U.S. That is due to Sony debuting the PlayStation 4 Pro, which is a 4K-capable version of its console. The back-and-forth performance for these two systems is one of the major reasons retailers are generating so much revenue at the start of the shopping season.Cyber Monday is on track to be the biggest online shopping day ever, surpassing our forecast by almost $27 million, or 0.8 percent,  Adobe Digital Insights director and analyst Tamara Gaffney said in a statement.

Sharp drops in smartphone sales for China s Xiaomi Inc will not have a major impact on the company as profit growth will be driven by sales from smart home devices as well as revenue from its software eco-system, a senior executive said.Xiaomi was valued at $46 billion in its last fund-raising in 2014 – making it briefly the world s most valuable start-up at a time when it was China s best-selling smartphone maker and looked set to make a splash worldwide. But last year it missed its global smartphone targets by 12 percent, while its third-quarter China smartphone sales have tumbled 45 percent, according to research firm IDC – raising doubts that the valuation is still warranted.Xiaomi s global vice-president Hugo Barra said the company s business model was not based on money made from handset sales per se and that it did not need to raise more funds or see any point in doing so at a valuation of less than $46 billion.Basically we re giving handsets to you without making any money… we care about the recurring revenue streams over many years, he told Reuters in an interview. We could sell 10 billion smartphones and we wouldn t make a single dime in profits, he added.Xiaomi, which discloses little of its profit and revenue figures, has increasingly emphasized its range of home appliances such as air and water purifiers, and rice cookers as key earnings drivers. In April, Xiaomi Vice President Liu De said the firm expects sales of smart home devices to double to 10 billion yuan $1.5 billion this year. The company has invested heavily in India and Southeast Asia and is making its first forays into the U.S. market – launching next month its first device capable of roaming on the country s 4G networks.Barra said they are first targeting Chinese users traveling in the U.S., but are laying the groundwork for direct sales to U.S. consumers. In January, Xiaomi will also make its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, launching a new product during the event, he said.Xiaomi s tentative first steps in the U.S. smartphone market come as cash-strapped rival LeEco faces a crippling shortage of funds, which were revealed in a public letter by CEO Jia Yueting months after the company launched its first flagship phones in the United States. There s no pressing need to do an IPO or even a private round, said Barra brushing off concerns that Xiaomi could face a similar funding shortage. We are not a flash in someone s PR pan.Reporting by Catherine Cadell; Editing by Edwina Gibbs
