Image by Alex Castro / The Verge Microsoft says it’s planning to fix a bizarre Windows 10 bug that could corrupt a hard drive just by looking at an icon. Security researcher Jonas L first warned about the bug earlier this week, describing it as a “nasty vulnerability.” Attackers can hide a specially crafted line inside a ZIP file, folder, or even a simple Windows shortcut. All a Windows 10 user needs to do is extract the ZIP file or simply look at a folder that contains a malicious shortcut and it will automatically trigger hard drive corruption. Will Dormann, a vulnerability analyst at the CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC), confirmed the findings, and notes that there could be more ways to trigger the NTFS corruption. Dormann also revealed the vulnerability has... Continue reading…

Facebook is rolling out a way for users of its flagship iOS and Android applications to customize the shortcuts in their navigation bars.People will have the option of hiding shortcuts to features they don’t access often, such as video destination Facebook Watch, ecommerce hub Facebook Marketplace, recent addition Facebook Dating, groups, events, profile, friend requests, News, Today In and Gaming, as well as the red notification dots that appear with those shortcuts.Long-pressing on the shortcut bar will bring up this functionality for users who have received they update, at which point they can remove shortcuts they no longer wish to see and turn off badge notifications for tabs. The social network said it wanted to give people the ability to turn notifications they receive within the app on and off as they wish.Facebook said the update is available to nearly all iOS users, and it is ramping up on Android, with the aim of global availability in the next few weeks.A spokesperson for the social network said in an email, “We are rolling out navigation bar controls to make it easier for people to connect with the things they like and control the notifications they get within the Facebook app.”
Facebook is making a wonderful change to its mobile app to ease the pain on our notification-riddled brains: the company is rolling out the ability to turn off notification dots for some icons on the shortcuts bar and will even let you remove some of those shortcuts entirely. The new feature was reported on by TechCrunch.I tested it on iOS, and hiding notification dots is pretty easy to do.Just tap and hold on an icon on the shortcuts bar, and a menu will pop up that gives you the choice to remove that icon from the bar or turn off the attention-grabbing red dots for it:You can also manage what’s on your shortcut bar by tapping the hamburger menu icon > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Shortcuts.I was able to hide the icons and notification dots for Watch, Profile, and Groups, and TechCrunch reports you can do so for Marketplace, Events, and Dating as well.
It's easy to alphabetize data in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet by row or column using the "Sort" feature. One of the most common functions in an Excel spreadsheet is sorting data alphabetically. While there are several ways to alphabetize rows and columns, the most reliable way is to give instructions within the "Sort" feature, which is found in the "Data" tab.Additionally, there are shortcuts to quickly reorganize cells from "A to Z" or from "Z to A."Excel automatically tries to alphabetize vertically by column, but you can easily adjust this setting to sort horizontally by row.Check out the products mentioned in this article:
iOS users are now rejoicing over the power that the new Shortcuts, formerly Workflow, is bringing to their iPhones and iPads but Android has long had an automation framework that enabled a lot more.Granted, Tasker might not have the most colorful UI but what it lacks in looks it makes up in power.Android’s premier automator is about to get more powerful thanks to the addition of support for listening to Logcat Events.Let’s divert to some technical stuff for just a short while. On Android, logcat is a tool where developers and other tools are able to see all the events that happen on the Android system, or at least those that log their events.Being able to listen to logcat events basically allows Tasker to react to any and most events that happen on the phone or tablet.
Apple may have invested billions in its Apple TV+ streaming service and hosted star-studded events to tout its new shows, but what it apparently didn’t do is give much thought to designing its TV app to help direct users to its exclusive content.Instead, the Apple TV+ shows were mixed in with everything else at launch — forcing users to scroll past What to Watch recommendations and more from the larger iTunes catalog just to find the Apple TV+ section. And even if and when you found that Apple TV+ section, each individual show page is poorly organized, too.Instead of following the standard format where a season’s episodes are listed in vertical order on an iPhone, Apple’s TV app opts for a horizontal scroll instead. It's a mistake to not capture sentiment data ( / ) from the get-go, as in a year or two, 80 shows down the road, personalized recommendations will be essential— Steve Troughton-Smith (@stroughtonsmith) November 4, 2019
TikTok will soon join the list of social networks integrated into your favorite apps.On Monday, November 4, TikTok announced TikTok for Developers, a software development kit (SDK) that allows third-party apps to add a TikTok shortcut for easy sharing to the popular network focused on short videos. The platform launches with seven apps already building a TikTok shortcut into the program, including mobile video editors like Adobe Premiere Rush, as well as Plotaverse, an app for turning still photos into GIF animations. The capability allows users to easily access more editing tools and options than what’s on TikTok alone.Along with Rush and Plotaverse, the list of apps building in a TikTok integration includes PicsArt, a popular photo- and video-editing app; Enlight Videoleap, a mobile video editor; fuse.it, an augmented reality video tool; medal.tv, an app for sharing gaming videos; and Momento GIF Maker, an app for automatically generating animations from your camera roll.“TikTok offers lots of creative filters and editing tools, and we want to continue giving our users the tools to create whatever they can imagine,” the company shared in a blog post.
There’s too much hype about mythical “10X developers.” Everyone’s desperate to hire these “ninja rockstars.” In reality, it’s smarter to find ways of deleting annoying chores for the coders you already have.CTO.ai claims it can turn a days-long process like setting up a Kubernetes cluster into a 15-minute task even sales people can handle. What’s remarkable about CTO.ai is that amidst a frothy funding environment, the 60-person team quietly bootstrapped its way to profitability over the past two years. But after a chance meeting aboard a plane connected its high school dropout founder Kyle Campbell with Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, CTO.ai just raised a $7.5 million seed round led by Slack Fund and Tiger Global.“Building tools that streamline software development is really expensive for companies, especially when they need their developers focused on building features and shipping to customers,” Campbell tells me.Teaching snakes to eat elephants

IKEA is both famous and infamous in the way it has changed the furniture market or at least the expectations of some homeowners. But while some credit it for taking a more modern spin on furniture, it only recently started making some of its products smarter by jumping on the IoT bandwagon. But now that it has a few such smart home products under its belt, the company is looking into making sure they work well together. It’s next step, apparently, is to make a smart shortcut button whose sole use is to start a custom-made scene. There are two layers to this leak from Swedish site Teknikveckan (Technology Week).First is the idea that IKEA will be implementing “scenes” in its Smart Home app.
After announcing its “.new” top-level domain (TLD) last year, Google has now announced that it is bringing .new shortcuts to the rest of the internet.Businesses and organizations will now be able to register their own .new domain to generate a .new shortcut that will work with their own web apps.Microsoft and Spotify have already jumped on the opportunity with Microsoft registering “word.new” to create a new Word document and Spotify registering “playlist.new” to allow its users to quickly make a new playlist on its streaming music app.Google's .new domains are designed to improve users' workflow by allowing them to jump straight into the action as opposed to visiting a site, signing in and then finding the right menu or function to create a new document or start a new activity.Google to launch .dev domainsHowever, while the search giant's doc.new and sheet.new domains often open seamlessly because most users are already signed into Google, other services still require users to sign in before they can begin using their .new domains.
You'll now be able to access more than just Google's own products when you pop a shortcut into the address bar of your browser. On Tuesday, Google revealed several new .new domain shortcuts, which open up the features to outside companies including Spotify and Medium.Google's first three shortcuts -- docs.new, sheets.new, slides.new -- arrived in 2018, letting you quickly create new documents, spreadsheets and presentations by typing the short address directly into the URL bar of your web browser. With the latest additions, you're able to type playlist.new into an address bar to create a new Spotify playlist, story.new to create a post on Medium or link.new to shorten a link with Bitly. There are also new shortcuts from RunKit, Cisco Webex and OVO Sound."Similar to .app, .page, and .dev, .new will be secure because all domains will be served over HTTPS connections," said Google's Ben Fried in a blog post Tuesday.
Scientists are raising interplanetary bees and Google is speeding up your keys, but first: a cartoon about obsessive Instagrammers. Here's the news you need to know, in two minutes or less.Want to receive this two-minute roundup as an email every weekday?Bees, please: Stop dying in your Martian simulatorThe Mars simulator in Pila, Poland, is mainly for humans: It simulates what it’s like to live and work at a base on the moon or Mars. The reason is that scientists realize we will need pollinators if we are ever going to grow food in those space places, so they need to figure something out: Is it possible to keep the bees alive?
A year ago, Google introduced one of those time-saving tricks that makes the cold, relentless march of time just a little bit more bearable: You could suddenly create a new Google doc simply by typing doc.new into your URL bar.Ditto spreadsheets, calendar events, and other Google-specific tasks. Now Google’s making that small magic available to the rest of the internet as well.As promised, Google has started the process of opening up its .new-powered shortcuts to the broader web. That includes a handful of select sites that have already implemented it, a few of which promise to be immediately life-changing depending on your specific needs. And in a lightly recursive touch, you can make new shortened links with Bitly at the very short new link link.new.
In the digital era, every hardware is made into invisible software that can bring food, provisions, appliances and much more at your doorsteps. You can create your own blockchain framework or clone the existing blockchain network that is closer enough to your expectations. You can clone the existing blockchain framework and add valuable features like maximizing the data block space, coin supply, miners, and much more. You can start crafting your own cryptocurrency with the underlying blockchain technology.Creating the entire code right from scratch could be a hectic task. You can’t expect the entire world to accept your cryptocurrency soon after the launch.
