The company is on site in Stockholm and Helsinki, in the office hotel, but the company is growing fast locally and hiring right now ranging from IT architects to business developers. As digital technology could reveal in December AWS will soon open an entire office in Stockholm. Now it is clear that the company will open a larger office at Drottninggatan in central Stockholm in the autumn. Nordic and Stockholm is a very exciting place to be, says Eric Morales, head of AWS Nordic team for gaming companies and startups. The AWS is in Sweden and Finland is precisely due to the many successful Startupfactory and gaming companies here, among the large customers are Supercell Clash of Clans, Rovio Angry Birds and King Candy Crush Saga.
Hironao Kunimitsu turned Gumi Inc. into a 32 billion yen $291 million company by betting early on smartphone apps. Now, he s pouring money into virtual reality, on the hunch that we re on the cusp of the next tech boom. The chief executive officer of the mobile-games company isn t alone.Other Japanese peers, including Gree Inc., invest in the sector. The industry is at the same point that smartphones were almost a decade ago, with plenty of opportunities right now to invest in virtual-reality hardware and software before they become mainstream.Gumi s partners in the fund are Marco DeMiroz and Tipatat Chennavasin, both former gaming executives. While iconic publishers such as Nintendo Co., Sega and Namco dominated the industry two decades ago, it was upstarts like Gumi and Colopl that foresaw the potential in smartphones.DeNA Co., an early mobile Internet pioneer and Nintendo s smartphone game partner, has no plans for investing in VR, according to founder Tomoko Namba.

Good news for game developers around the world — the .game domain extension has officially launched for anyone to register. The Internet has seen a flurry of new top-level domains TLD beyond the likes of .com, .net, or .org, a movement that was spurred when ICANN first revealed plans to extend things back in 2011.This has meant that companies can buy their very own unique closed TLD, such as what a certain Internet giant did with .Google, but it has also led to a bunch of industry-specific domains, such as .florist and .game.Five registrars had applied to operate the new .game domain extension, including the likes of Google and Amazon, but Cayman Islands-based Uniregistry won out last year, with the company s general counsel Bret Fausett announcing it in a tweet.Uniregistry also owns other notable domain extensions including .audio, .auto, .car, .christmas, .flowers, .help, .hiphop, and .photo.Before the new .game extension was opened to the public, there were several earlier pre-registration phases allowing brands and trademark-holders to get a head start, and according to Uniregistry, virtually all of the high-profile gaming brands had snapped up relevant names. We are especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world s leading gaming companies, said Frank Schilling, the managing director of Uniregistry, in a press release. And although a quick search confirms that many of the popular gaming brands are no longer available, many can still be bought — for example Mario.game is yours for a mere $1,430 per year.At any rate, the new public offering should serve as a boon for software companies and app developers who have found memorable .com domains harder to come by..Game domain names are where the art of marketing intersects with computer science and the technology of the web.
If I had $ 3 billion when Mojang bought up, I had clearly outbid Microsoft, he said from the stage and drew the eyes of the investors in the audience. I have never had any question about the business model and our numbers. It's a very exciting combination of the existence of extremely large revenue opportunities while being one of the most complex industries you can venture into, he says, when Breakit talk to him afterwards. One of the things that makes the sector extremely difficult to invest in is to either investors or gaming companies themselves can know about the next game will be a hit or not. Looking back it has traditionally been much investment in very young companies which invest in the team. But there are very many examples of companies that have succeeded with a great brand and then not reached the same level in the next game.
Well, now you can, as the new Top-Level Domain TLD is available for usage for those involved in the gaming community in one way or another.Blizzard, for example, nabbed the Warcraft, Starcraft, Hearthstone, Diablo and Heroes of the Storm domain names in the early trademark registration period, subsequently grabbing Overwatch.game on the team-based shooter's launch day.Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto were reserved by Activision and Take-Two Interactive respectively, and naturally Microsoft grabbed Minecraft, with Square Enix having no hesitation in snagging Final Fantasy.Amanda Fessenden, Director of Registry Business Operations for Uniregistry, commented: "While we are excited to see existing gaming companies acquire their .game domain names, we are even more excited by what will come next – the creation of websites, marketing campaigns, and games themselves built on these great domains."There are certainly some individuals who are making good use of the new domains, for example Georgia Van Cuylenberg, a voice actor who has worked with the Final Fantasy and Star Wars franchises in the past, bagged voiceover.game to advertise her skills. You can scope out whether your potential .game domain has already been taken at the Uniregistry website.
If you re looking for an address to park your online game upon, you can now buy a .game top level domain TLD , because .com is just so last decade. And of course, Blizzard has done its due diligence for popular series like Warcraft, StarCraft, Hearthstone, Diablo, and Heroes of the Storm. These domains don t come cheap though — the annual maintenance fee will be $318.88, which will certainly add up if you re planning on keeping your web address for any extended period of time. And we re especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world s leading gaming companies. As PC Magazine reports, Apple bought iPad.game, AppleWatch.game, and AppleTV.game; Microsoft picked up Xbox.game; and Sony Interactive registered PlayStation.game.Amanda Fessenden, Director of Registry Business Operations for Uniregistry, echoed Schilling s sentiments, noting, While we are excited to see existing gaming companies acquire their .game domain names, we are even more excited by what will come next — the creation of websites, marketing campaigns, and games themselves built on these great domains.
Media giant Vivendi has long expressed its desire to takeover Gameloft, a giant in the mobile gaming industry, and it has now practically succeeded. Both Vivendi and Gameloft are based in France and, under French laws, when one company owns a certain percentage of shares in another, they are required to make a bid for a takeover. The multinational media company then started offering to buy shares at a rather aggressive pace, giving full credence to the word "hostile".Vivendi insists that it can help Gameloft become more ambitious, especially considering how Gameloft started out doing "knockoffs" of popular console or PC titles.Although Vivendi won't say it out loud, its recent actions hint that it could be targeting other gaming companies in its mission to expand its territory.SOURCE: Vivendi

Nintendo's top gaming man Shigeru Miyamoto has given a brief comment to the press about his company's plans for the Nintendo NX, suggesting that there is indeed some sort of weird new element to it that goes beyond the humble decisions about button colour and controller shape faced by other gaming companies.Nintendo probably won't want to spend the money necessary to give the NX enough power to compete with today's VR platforms.Maybe it is just swapping the letter on the buttons around or adding an extra 20cm to all the wires? This confusion and delay in revealing the NX's Big Secret has led industry observers like the omnipresent Michael Pachter to claim there's little chance of Nintendo making its previously announced March 2017 launch date for the NX, as if they're still working on its magical and mysterious new features now what chance any actual games that use them being finished in time?AP via Express Want more updates from Gizmodo UK?Make sure to check out our @GizmodoUK Twitter feed, and our Facebook page.

Lizard Squad may be mostly behind bars, but their LizardStresser botnet has spawned more than 100 clones.According to Arbor Networks' Matthew Bing, the imitators have lit on the Internet of Things, enslaving thousands of dumb devices with code the hacker group published last year.LizardStresser is an illegal booter service partly-arrested hacking group Lizard Squad built on the back of hacked routers. It was used, to great outrage, to cripple the Xbox Live service bringing it offline for days during the peak Christmas period at a time when gamers were attempting to update their newly acquired consoles and play online.Bing says the tweaked and increasing LizardStresser bots have been used to attack banks, telcos, and gaming companies."The number of unique LizardStresser command-and-control sites has been steadily increasing throughout 2016," Bing says
Large financial institutions and gaming companies are amongst those hit by the latest IoT botnet attacksAttackers have built up a massive botnet of Internet-connected webcams and are using it to launch strikes against targets in Brazil and the US.The botnet, tracked by computer security firm Arbor Networks, is the latest to misuse the computing power of the Internet-connected devices that make up the so-called Internet of Things IoT .Hacker, programmer, cyber crime, keyboard, computer scyther5, Shutterstock 2014 Utilising the cumulative bandwidth available to these IoT devices, one group of threat actors has been able to launch attacks as large as 400Gbps targeting gaming sites world-wide, Brazilian financial institutions, ISPs, and government institutions, Arbor said in an advisory.Arbor said the attackers used a botnet called LizardStresser, originally written by the Lizard Squad hacking group, which released its source code publicly early last year. The botnet heightens the risk because it is easy to use and can be adapted to run on embedded devices without much difficulty.
It is not only big global players such as LinkedIn and Uber who want to be in China, but also Mojang and Swedish Paradox has become aware of the country. A week later came the news that Swedish Paradox will release their games in the country with Internet giant Tencent as partners. The back-and-forth war between YouTube and the music industry continues, this time with a new privacy report from Google. In the company's "How Google Fights Privacy" report released today, the company details data showing that YouTube has paid $2 billion £1.5 billion to copyright holders through its Content ID system. That's double the payout it announced in 2014, which covered the payments received by the music industry since Content ID was introduced back in 2007.Content ID is YouTube's way of scanning user-created content for copyright infringement, and it also has the music industry up in arms. When a creator uploads content to YouTube, the Content ID system detects if there's any trace of copyrighted material in the user-generated content, such as music. The copyright holders have the power to use Content ID to either report, block, or monetize videos that are identified as containing copyrighted content.
There s been much talk about Nintendo suddenly creating an enormous amount of value for itself with the release of Pokémon Go, perhaps one of the most successful game launches of all time.Following Pokémon Go, Nintendo s market valuation soared to more than $40 billion, passing Sony and quickly becoming one of the most valuable gaming companies in the world. This is a pretty amazing rise, but in the reference frame of the rest of the industry it could also signal a peculiar shift in mentality for how gaming companies are valued.Nintendo, compared to other publishers, is suddenly not being valued similarly against its revenue projections for the next year similar to other companies. That content helps Nintendo sell more hardware units. The Wii was a classic example of this — the entry-level content, whether for hardcore gamers The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess or casual gamers Wii Sports was more than enough to produce a very large initial install base.
