Microsoft takes another swing at Google's productivity suite with the new featureA new Skype for Business integration makes it possible for users to hold live chats to discuss documents stored in OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online.Microsoft's attempts to catch up with Google in the online collaboration space took a step forward Wednesday, when the company announced that it's giving business users live chat in Office Online. When more than one person is working on a shared document inside Word, Excel, OneNote or PowerPoint Online, they'll see a chat button show up in the Web app's toolbar. The chats aren't designed to replace traditional document collaboration tools like leaving comments and tracking changes, but they can help a team of people all looking at the same document to better work together in a more rapid-fire way. It's a feature that has been core to Google's Docs productivity suite for quite some time, and this update means that businesses using Office 365 have another reason to consider sticking with Microsoft rather than switching to one of its competitors.Microsoft has recently rolled out a number of other updates to Office, including new watch face support in Outlook on Android Wear and the launch of SharePoint for iOS, which the company announced earlier this month.

MENLO PARK -- With a microphone floating in zero gravity, three astronauts aboard the International Space Station chatted with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday via live video about life in space.Taking questions submitted on NASA's Facebook page, the 32-year-old CEO asked NASA astronauts Tim Kopra and Jeff Williams, and Tim Peake from the European Space Agency, about the research they are conducting, what they do for fun aboard the station, using social media in space and even if food tastes different. As of Wednesday morning, the 20-minute video had more than 1.5 million views.Kopra, the commander of the International Space Station, said they're still trying to understand the impact of zero gravity on the human body, including the negative effects. The station, which can often be seen from Earth with the naked eye, serves as a laboratory for microgravity research and is the largest artificial body in orbit.AdvertisementThe six-member crew exercises a couple of hours every day to combat the loss of bone density and muscle mass in space and they routinely get their eyes scanned, said Kopra, who has been working in the station for more than 160 days.Like people on Earth, crew members said they also use social media to share photographs and their thoughts during the mission though the internet connection isn't as fast.Follow her at Twitter.com/QwongSJ.

Many business owners see live chat as yet another tool, just like email or phone, that can be used to contact customers. They either don t see much benefit in it or they are not aware of its full potential. What is live chat for a modern online business then?
In a short video post that was shared from his account on Wednesday, the Facebook founder and CEO announced the live chat broadcast in a rather quiet fashion.Zuckerberg signs off by asking users that wish to participate in the interactive livestream to leave their questions in the comments section below the post. The Q session kicks off at 11.30am PT on June 14, meaning you still have six days to formulate your thoughts and get those burning issues off your chest. We can cover all the big areas you re interested in — connecting the world, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, live video, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and more.Do you see global warming being an issue that is too late to resolve?Another highly rated comment states: I see that you have huge ambitions to bring internet to the furthest stretches of the world and even space; yet I can t help but notice that in many places in the USA, in rural areas, you simply cannot get online.
YouTube will soon throw open the gates to live broadcasting inside its mobile apps. The announcement on the YouTube Creator Blog didn't mention a specific launch date. However, the details show a service that is similar to other live platforms, with the ability to allow live chat, make the stream public, and notify subscribers. The live broadcast feature is coming first to YouTube s more popular creators before it s made available to all, presumably to work out any issues before the masses can partake. Why this matters: Live video has become very popular, most dramatically this week when U.S. House Democrats used Periscope to live broadcast their sit-in to call for a vote on gun safety legislation. With this capability entering the mainstream, YouTube certainly doesn t want to be left out while rivals Facebook and Periscope take up all the attention.

A rumor is floating around that suggest Google is ready to make it easier for buyers of its Nexus devices to get support when it's needed. As it stands now, support involves reading support documents and a live chat session with support. The source of that mockup isn't specified, but it clearly shows a button that would let the user share their screen with support. If the rumor were true, this would only be for Nexus devices since Google offers no support for other Android smartphones or tablets. The new app could launch with the HTC Marlin and Sailfish Nexus smartphones.SOURCE: Android Police
It provides basic information about me and my interests, and can act like an automated concierge for simple requests like posting a product to Product Hunt or scheduling live chat office hours without requiring any intervention on my part.I ve carved out a few one-hour slots in a special Google Calendar that my bot fills up in 15-minute chunks with up to 10 participants per segment .I open office hours by sending a command to MessinaBot that does two things: notifies each attendee that I m ready to start chatting via my bot, and disables MessinaBot s autoresponder for those attendees. In theory, this all sounds great, and technically went off without a hitch.button opened up 10 individual conversations through Facebook s Pages Messaging tool.Good so far.I had several interesting topical conversations with different participants  —  exactly what I was hoping for. However, as each conversation developed, I fell behind on others, which is exactly when things went south. If you were paying attention above, it might have seemed insane to slot 10 people into 15-minute increments.Well, my friend, you are correct.I mean, I m as good at multitasking as any other human, but even under the most ideal circumstances, it s hard to carry on three simultaneous conversations, let alone ten.So if humans are naturally cognitively ill-equipped for this kind of task, try wrapping the metaphorical equivalent of two shellfish bands around your four non-thumb fingers and keeping up with nearly a dozen chat-based conversations.
BetaList features the newest startups.Today, we take a closer look at Peek which provides fun, private live streaming with friends & family.Submit your startup to get featured too.In contrast to public live streaming services like Periscope, Peek centers around live streaming with small, private groups; something which we compare to a Whatsapp for live video .Not only does this allow for more personal conversations to happen, but it also plugs directly into your existing address book for a simpler, more social experience with emoji support, live chat & instant replays.Where did the idea come from?
Other aspects of influence are well handled, but it seems this is very much overlooked on websites.OK, there's a modest chat box in the bottom right and/or survey tool hi Sean/Qualaroo lol .But that's pretty passive and comes nowhere near the relationship building and liking you get from a salesperson on the floor shmoozing and hearing fishing stories and what the prospect's genius 4 year old said yesterday. How do we listen better to prospects?Do we just need to be more aggressive in initiating live chat?Ask better ice-breakers to get visitors talking?
When 20 percent of customers' questions take up 80 percent of live chat agents' time—and many of those questions are predictable and repetitive—getting a robot involved with the conversation seems a no-brainer.After all, it's proved very difficult over the years although not impossible for robots to pass the fabled Turing Test; a test in which subjects try to distinguish between machines and humans on the basis of responses to their questions. The Arouga Hills, Ca.-based online engagement solutions vendor TouchCommerce today announced TouchAssist, a virtual assistant capable of conducting intelligent, responsive chats in natural language.Part of the RightTouch conversation engine, the product is designed to offer a friction-free customer experience as conversations segue between robots—or "virtual assistants" VAs —and live agents.According to Forrester, 84 percent of US customers have used self-service apps, FAQs or Help on company websites in the last 12 months. It's not the only smart VA on the market, of course, but Skaff points to integration of VA and live chat as a differentiating factor.

A well-crafted client and ample choice of servers are definite boons, but other VPN tools offer better value for money than ExpressVPN.ExpressVPN is a small British Virgin Islands-based provider of VPN services. The company's products are eye-wateringly expensive, from the $12.95 £9.96, AU$17.43 for a one-off month option to the $99.95 £77, AU$135 plan for annual payments. We browsed the feature list looking for an explanation, but couldn't really find one.Sure, the 130 servers in 87 countries is welcome, and there's a Linux client as well as Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, along with 24/7 live chat support if you have problems. There's no free plan or trial, either, although ExpressVPN does provide a "no-hassle money-back guarantee" – you can cancel your order within 30 days and you'll get a full refund.

Montreal-based Smooch raised $7.6 million in its latest round of funding, the company announced today. The round was led by Real Ventures and iNovia Capital, with participation from TA Associates and Smooch s founders. The money will be used to hire more than 20 people to work in offices in San Francisco and Montreal in order to expand the company s open source chat client, Smooch Conversation Cloud.Smooch will use this financing round to expand its support for consumer messaging channels and business software vendors, and to continue to build its team, the company said in a statement Monday.Smooch Conversation Cloud can be used on websites and inside apps.In June, Smooch announced that conversations started in its live chat client, often seen in the bottom right hand corner of websites, can automatically be transferred and synced between Facebook Messenger, Line, WeChat, Twilio, and other chat platforms.I think what we ve done is really thought about how much more useful we can make website chat to individual customers and visitors to a website, because the minute you break it free from the web page, then it turns into a relationship with the customer that lasts even after the browser is closed, cofounder and head of product Mike Gozzo told VentureBeat in an interview in June.
Marketing platform Boomtrain announced that it acquired chat client Nudgespot today, and that the new merged company will create Boomtrain Messenger for businesses to communicate with customers.Nudgespot makes live chat within websites or apps.Like Liveperson, Smooch, Drift and others in the space, the chat typically seen in the bottom right hand corner of websites. The chat client currently integrates into Slack, Joomla, WordPress, and other platforms. The move is meant to increase Boomtrain s presence in Asia and reach in business to consumer messaging. We believe that AI-driven bots are still in their most nascent stages, and see messenger as a purposeful component of the broader suite of communication channels, said cofounder and CEO Nick Edwards. We re currently in early research stages of building highly opinionated chat bots to serve specific, mostly transactional use-cases.The new Boomtrain has 70 employees in offices in Bangalore and San Francisco.Last fall, Boomtrain received $12 million from investors.Founded in 2014, Nudgespot was created in part by Raven Sastry, whose previous company Mantra Design Pvt was acquired by Flipkart in 2014 for $330 million.
