Prime Healthcare announced today that 36 of its hospitals in 13 states are recipients of the Healthgrades 2020 Patient Safety Excellence AwardTM.

With this recognition, Prime Healthcare has more Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients for five consecutive years (2016-2020) than any other health system in the country. The distinction places 26 of Prime Healthcare’s hospitals in the top 5% and 10 others in the top 10% of all acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data as evaluated by Healthgrades, a leading resource connecting consumers, physicians, and health systems.“The need for hospitals to provide a safe environment for all patients is more important than ever.

We commend Prime Healthcare and its hospitals for their success in providing quality care and supporting their local communities across the country,” said Rob Draughon, CEO, Healthgrades.“Providing exceptional care and ensuring patient safety is at the core of our mission and has been especially critical during this pandemic.

We are grateful that nearly all our hospitals were honored by Healthgrades,” said Sunny Bhatia, MD, CEO of Region I and Corporate Chief Medical Officer for Prime Healthcare.

“This recognition is a testament to the commitment of Prime Healthcare, its clinicians and staff to delivering quality care with exceptional outcomes for our patients.”During the study period (2016 through 2018), Healthgrades 2020 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safeguarding patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes—risk-adjusted patient safety indicator (PSI) rates—for 13 PSIs defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

A 14th PSI included in the evaluation is “Foreign Objects Left in Body During a Surgery or Procedure,” which is a “never” event and does not have an expected rate.Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average*:48.3% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.54.4% less likely to experience a hip fracture following surgery, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.66.8% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.63% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital, than patients treated at non- recipient hospitals. In addition, if all hospitals in the country performed at the level of award recipients for each of the 13 patient safety indicators, 110,864 patient safety events could have been avoided.

“Our goal at ACEP is to work with forward-thinking providers, like Prime Healthcare, to promote the highest standards of care that lead to optimal outcomes for seniors.”The concept of geriatric emergency departments has advanced in the last 10 years.

These guidelines provide the foundation for the geriatric emergency department accreditation.“We are incredibly proud of our continued success in achieving this recognition at more of our locations throughout the country and applaud our hospital teams for their exceptional work in this area,” Sunny Bhatia, MD, Prime Healthcare Region I CEO and Corporate Chief Medical Officer.

The News 4 & Fox 11 Team spoke with long-time Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center (SMRMC) registered nurse, Tamara Erickson, on Thursday morning about her experience amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.Similar to other nurses in the northern Nevadan region, Erickson said there is frustration and confusion among staff at SMRMC.

Including honest communication from management, getting told different things on different days it’s not exactly a surprise but knowing what changed to make those differences we don't get," Erickson said.We have not spoken with other SMRMC nurses, but Erickson said the concerned nurses are well aware of the shortages and the fluidity that comes with their environment.

"I understand they believe they are going by CDC guidelines and if that is indeed the case then we are at a crisis point as far as equipment goes and that is disconcerting.

So be nice to know why two weeks ago we could not wear basic simple surgical masks on the floor, whereas now we are mandatorily required to wear them," said Erickson.Furthermore, Erickson said that nurses are misinformed on SMRMC's parent company's, Prime Healthcare Services, quarantine reimbursement plan.

"Right now they’re saying we will look at it on a case-by-case basis," she said.

"I’ve read the information that says they will only pay us 48 hours while we are off waiting for the test results if we get tested...We need to know that we are not going to be punished for doing the job that we are trained and willing to do in case and need you are exposed and put into quarantine.

The Attorney General’s decision follows an earlier decision by the US Bankruptcy Court of the Central District of California granting Verity’s request to reject the existing collective bargaining agreements which impose legacy cost structures that contributed to bankruptcy.Attorney General Xavier Becerra noted that his approval of the sale of St. Francis to Prime Healthcare “protect(s) access to care for the Los Angeles communities served” by St. Francis.

We conditionally approve this sale to keep it that way.”“Receiving conditional approval is an important step in ensuring Prime is able to preserve the St. Francis mission for the benefit of associates, members of the medical staff and most importantly the patients and Southeast Los Angeles community that has relied on St. Francis for 75 years.” said Rich Adcock, CEO of Verity Health.Prime Healthcare is nationally recognized for its success in saving financially distressed hospitals across the United States and clinical excellence, with hospitals named among the nation’s best as “100 Top” hospitals 53 times and more Patient Safety Excellence Awards than any other health system in the country, according to Healthgrades. In early April, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) for the sale of St. Francis Medical Center to Prime.

Under the agreement, Prime will acquire St. Francis for a net consideration of over $350 million, including a $200 million base cash price and $60 million for accounts receivable.

In addition, Prime has committed to invest $47 million in capital improvements and extending offers of employment to substantially all staff.Additionally, the Court recently granted Verity’s request to reject the existing collective bargaining agreements with two unions that represent associates at St. Francis Medical Center, SEIU and UNAC.

Prime negotiated in good faith and proposed increasingly generous offers to UNAC and SEIU with wages far above Prime’s existing agreements at its LA area hospitals.

Prime also proposed increasingly generous offers to UNAC with wages far above existing agreements in the market.“We are honored to be selected to continue the St. Francis legacy and are working to review the conditions and finalize the sale as quickly as possible,” said Sunny Bhatia, MD, CEO, Region I and Chief Medical Officer of Prime Healthcare.

The Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), part of an expanding network of private-public collaborations in support of the mission of the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM), has committed a $1.2 million annual donation to help eliminate medical school debt for medical students who pledge to serve needy communities in the region upon graduation.Leaders of IEHP and CUSM, which was founded by Dr. Prem Reddy and the Prime Healthcare Foundation, said the donation is an example of the type of philanthropy that can make an impact on the long-term health of communities while furthering the mission of the medical school: to inspire, motivate and empower students to become excellent and caring physicians, scientists, and leaders.

Thirty-five percent of current CUSM medical students are from the Inland Empire, and 50 percent come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

This transformational gift helps eliminate the financial pressure for deserving students who feel it the most.Seven annual scholarships, part of IEHP’s Healthcare Scholarship Fund, will be given to students who commit to providing primary healthcare to residents in Riverside and San Bernardino counties for five years after graduation.

Both counties have been identified as among the areas of the state having the most acute shortage of primary care doctors.“IEHP’s Healthcare Scholarship Fund is focused on supporting medical students who are committed to serve in the Inland Empire,” said Jarrod McNaughton, CEO of IEHP.

“That’s what makes our recipients so unique.

We commend CUSM for its trailblazing work and commitment to changing lives right here in the Inland Empire.”The extraordinary gift will assist qualified students in support of the vision of CUSM -- addressing the acute shortage of physicians in the Inland Empire through innovative medical education programs, research, and training.

For the ranking, hospitals were surveyed across three components: 1) assessing hospital contributions as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care; 2) identifying the ways hospitals contribute as community partners, teaming with local organizations to implement critical programs; and 3) focusing on ways hospitals promote community health as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress.
