Apple on Thursday removed the popular game Fortnite from its App Store, and in doing so, fell right into the trap set by Fortnite's maker, Epic Games. Epic set its snare by intentionally breaking one of Apple's rules, offering Fortnite players an alternative way to pay for its virtual currency than through the App Store. Apple's response of banning Fortnite is likely to help Epic win public relations battle — and served as a case in point for the lawsuit it immediately filed charging the iPhone maker with anticompetitive behavior. The way Apple runs the App Store has come under increasing scrutiny, but Epic's suit, which lays out a damning case against the company, could be its biggest challenge yet. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Tim Sweeney just led Apple right into an, ahem, epic trap — one that just might cause the iPhone maker some serious harm.  Epic Games, Sweeney's company and the maker of the popular Fortnite game, is accusing Apple of anticompetitive conduct. And on Thursday, Epic showed the world how. By deliberately breaking one of Apple's App Store rules, Epic provoked Apple into flexing its unchecked power, providing Exhibit A in the lawsuit that Epic had ready to go. Now, the other Tim — Apple CEO Tim Cook — has got to be shaking his head in wonder at how easily his company fell right into Epic's snare. The dispute between the two companies centers around Apple's control over the distribution of apps on iPhones and iPads. Apple device owners can only download apps from the company's App Store. If developers charge consumers for their apps, Apple takes a 30% cut. The company also gets a 30% cut off of sales of most digital goods — subscriptions, digital movies or books, virtual clothing for video game characters — that developers sell through their apps. Apple preloads its App Store on all iPhones and iPads and forbids any alternative methods of downloading apps. It also requires developers who offer in-app goods to use its payment mechanism and forbids them not only from using alternatives but, essentially, from even mentioning in their apps that users could buy the same products elsewhere for less money. Developers are unhappy, but feel they don't have a choice Developers have been grousing about such rules for years. Apple's 30% tax is exorbitantly high, they argue. And developers who already have payment processing services that they use on their websites or in other venues feel like they shouldn't have to pay for Apple's. But many developers feel they have no choice. Although more people use Android devices than Apple iOS devices,  there are still some 1.5 billion Apple gadgets in use around the world — a huge market that developers would forfeit if they abandoned the App Store. And users of Apple devices collectively spend nearly twice as much on apps as do owners of Android gadgets. Apple has long argued that it bars other app stores and payment services as a security measure and that it applies such rules even-handedly across all developers. Unlike other tech giants that dominate their primary markets — Google in search, Facebook in social networking, and Amazon in ecommerce — Apple has largely flown under the radar because it doesn't dominate its primary market, smartphones. But the company's iron-clad grip over the App Store has started to garner increasing attention. Last year, Spotify filed a complaint against Apple with the European Commission charging the iPhone maker with anticompetitive behavior related in part to the commissions it charges on purchases made through the App Store. Last month, members of Congress zeroed in on such conduct in a hearing focused on Apple and the other tech giants. Additionally, the US Department of Justice and a collection of states attorneys general are reportedly preparing to launch an investigation the company. Epic could prove dangerous for Apple But Epic could prove to be the most dangerous antagonist to date for Apple. Epic is a powerful company in and of itself, and one of the few that could potentially thrive without Apple. But it's also a dangerous foe for the iPhone maker because it showed in a series of moves on Thursday just how cunning it can be.  Earlier on Thursday, Epic lured Apple into a trap by deliberately violating Apple's App Store rules. Epic gave iPhone users a way to purchase V-bucks, the virtual currency in Fortnite, directly from Epic rather than through Apple's App Store. The move directly violated Apple's rules against offering alternative methods for users to pay for in-app purchases. Hours after Epic included the option, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, arguing that Epic was violating its rules and seeking special treatment. That move in and of itself could hurt Apple by infuriating the millions of Fortnite players who will no longer be able to download or update it on their Apple devices. There's a good chance they'll turn their ire on Apple, rather than Epic, when they find out why they can no longer get the game. But the bigger problem for Apple is what came next. Epic was obviously expecting Apple's decision to eject Fortnight, because shortly thereafter, the company sprung the final part of its snare. It filed a lawsuit charging Apple with trying to illegally block competition in the markets for app distribution and in-app purchases on iPhones and iPads — and cited Apple's response to its discounted V-buck offer as a primary case in point. "Rather than tolerate this healthy competition and compete on the merits of its offering, Apple responded by removing Fortnite from sale on the App Store," Epic said in its legal complaint. "Apple's removal of Fortnite," it continued, "is yet another example of Apple flexing its enormous power in order to impose unreasonable restraints and unlawfully maintain its 100% monopoly over the iOS In-App Payment Processing Market." Epic anticipated Apple's argument Epic's lawsuit also anticipated Apple's argument that the company was seeking special treatment. Although the lawsuit notes numerous times that it's been harmed financially by Apple's rules, Epic chose not to seek compensation from Apple for itself. Nor is it seeking that Apple be barred from enforcing rules just against it. Instead Epic is asking the US District Court for Northern California to declare Apple's rules "unlawful and unenforceable" in general and to issue an injunction barring its allegedly anticompetitive conduct being directed against any developer. In other words, Epic is painting itself as the champion of all app makers. It even did that just about literally in a video parodying Apple's famous 1984 ad. Only in Epic's recasting of the dystopian TV commercial, Apple's no longer the upstart but has instead taken over IBM's role of Big Brother. But Epic's lawsuit isn't just a public-relations move. The complaint lays out a well-reasoned and damning argument about Apple's power, about how little ability developers or consumers have to challenge that power, and what Apple's essentially unchallengeable rules are costing developers and consumers alike. "By imposing its 30% tax, Apple necessarily forces developers to suffer lower profits, reduce the quantity or quality of their apps, raise prices to consumers, or some combination of the three," Epic said in its suit. It smartly buttresses that argument by contrasting the cost of payment processing through other vendors — as little as 2.6% in some cases — with Apple's rate. And it reinforces its case with documents that were recently released by the House of Representatives in connection with that body's investigation into the tech giant's alleged anti-competitive conduct, such as an email from Steve Jobs that frankly acknowledged that its 30% commission would be "prohibitive for many things." The suit has got to be worrisome for Apple not just because of the case Epic makes, but because of the risks. Much of Apple's growth in recent years — and its surging stock price — has been sparked by its services business. Although its services business includes a lot of disparate offerings, a big portion of its revenue comes from the App Store. Were Apple's App Store business upturned, the company might not have such a great story to sell Wall Street. But Apple — just as Sweeney seemed to expect — fell right into Epic's trap. It now has to find its own way out. Got a tip about Apple? Sign up for the event here. And now, to the news!  Social-media platforms like Triller and Instagram are taking steps to lure creators away from TikTok as they aim to become more competitive in the short-form video category. My colleague Dan Whateley wrote about Triller's new hire, 18-year-old TikTok star Josh Richards, who will serve as chief strategy officer as the platform looks to raise $250 million in new funding. Two of Richards' friends and content collaborators — Griffin Johnson, 21, and Noah Beck, 19 — will also join Triller as advisors and equity shareholders. The three previously worked and lived together as members of a TikTok creator collective called Sway LA. But don't expect them to stop posting on TikTok. "We aren't going to stop right away posting on TikTok because we want to be able to migrate our audience over from TikTok to Triller," Richards said. Read the full post, here. My colleague Sydney Bradley spoke with Turner who shared her tips for growth in reach and engagement on Instagram Stories.  "I advise five to eight story slides filled with impactful content," Turner said. "If you want to share longer-form content (i.e. a day in the life, clothing haul, a routine, etc.), I'd say limit your stories to 15 to 20 slides. Anything past this will cause drop off unless you're adding value." Dan wrote that Yorke worked with the app-marketing company Yoke, which provided her with a tracking link to add to her TikTok bio that would give her credit for any app installs she drove from her account.  "I literally posted it right before I went to sleep," Yorke said. "I woke up the next day and I had like $20,000 in my account, so I was just like, is this real?" She had originally created her YouTube channel in 2012, but she didn't post videos consistently until six months ago, she said. "There's been a big jump in my channel from six months to now, in terms of my following," Lauren said. "For me, my most viewed video is actually a video on weight gain and how you can grow your butt through working out. That's the video that got me a lot of subscribers."  Lauren treats her YouTube channel as a side hustle, but wants to pursue her digital business as a full-time career one day, she said. "I'm also in school and I work, but I think if you really want something you just make time for it," she said. Lauren shared her tips for starting out and growing a YouTube channel. Here's what she said:  "Be consistent. Drop videos every week and make the time for it. It looks easy, but it takes hours of editing and time." "I get emails from various companies who want me to include a product in a video. Make sure to go back and forth with a brand and negotiate what you deserve. I'm my own manager for now, pitching brands and responding to emails. I don't accept every offer, only the ones that I genuinely believe in." TikTok star Dixie D'Amelio recently released her first single, "Be Happy."  The song was released under a new family-owned label, DAM FAM Recordings, and reached over 1 million Spotify streams within its first weekend. With millions of followers across many social-media platforms, D'Amelio and her family are a powerhouse in the influencer industry. Her sister Charli is TikTok's most followed creator with 73 million followers, and their parents Heidi and Marc also have large followings online.  Business Insider spoke with the family's comanagers about developing a song with Dixie and their plans to work with more talent on music going forward.  Subscribe to Business Insider's influencer newsletter: Influencer Dashboard. TikTok star Dixie D'Amelio and her internet-famous family aren't betting on an established record label for her introduction into the music industry. Instead, they are counting on the massive fanbase their family has built across social media.  At the end of June, Dixie released her first single titled "Be Happy" under her family-owned label, DAM FAM Recordings. The song reached over 1 million Spotify streams within its first weekend and at the beginning of July, Dixie made Billboard's list of Emerging Artists.  She first teased to the song on TikTok in June, singing an a capella rendition of it for her 30 million TikTok followers. The music video, which was released on July 1, has 52 million views on YouTube.  With millions of followers across many social-media platforms, Dixie and her family are a powerhouse in the influencer industry. Her sister Charli is TikTok's most followed creator with 73 million followers (that number will have likely changed by the time you read this), and their parents Heidi and Marc also have large followings online.  Outside of TikTok, the sisters have landed traditional Hollywood roles (Charli is the voice of a character in a new animated film), spent time with celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, and are the face of new product collabs with companies like Hollister and Morphe Cosmetics.  To make it all happen, the D'Amelios are comanaged by the firms Outshine Talent and Manncom Creative Partners, and represented by United Talent Agency for larger business ventures, like going on tour, or a possible reality TV show which the family has teased recently.  Barbara Jones, who is the founder of Outshine Talent, and Billy Mann, the founder of Manncom Creative Partners, weren't initially brought on to help the family with music projects. But as they discovered Dixie's interest and talent, they were able to create a plan using the deep knowledge of the industry they shared from past experiences working at top record labels.  For Dixie, the launch of her new song is the start of a larger strategy, Jones said. It will rely on the family's celebrity-level team and the massive distribution funnel the D'Amelios have built across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, rather than a traditional record label. Business Insider spoke with Jones and Mann about developing the song and their plans to work with more talent on music going forward.  Inside developing the song  The idea to work with Dixie on a song came after her dad Marc shared a video of her singing at a school event with Mann and Jones late last year. "We have to remember, a year ago Dixie was in school and the parents were carpooling to dance class," Mann said. "She can really sing and has her own style and her own manner of singing which is a lot harder to come by. There's a distinct character to her voice." The song was recorded in Mann's private home studio earlier this spring, he said.  Mann said he sent Dixie dozens of songs to look over and they would spend hours talking about them over FaceTime. She eventually choose "Be Happy," which was produced by Christian Medice (who has worked with Halsey) and was cowritten by Medice, Samantha DeRosa, Joe Kirkland, and Mann. "When she heard 'Be Happy,' it really resonated with her and I think it resonated with her because sometimes being happy is not easy, especially with the way the world is now," Mann said.  "It felt like Dixie," Jones added. "This was a good song for her style and her range. There's nothing wishy-washy about Dixie."  Days before the song was released, Mann told the family that given her audience online, and the fact that she was a brand new artist, Dixie could expect between 100,000 and 250,000 streams within the first week.  But like most everything the family does online, the song was instantly trending and received widespread interest across many social-media platforms.  How the team behind Dixie's music came together  Both Mann and Jones have worked for a variety of record companies over the years. In 2007, Jones was the head of marketing for Columbia Records in New York, and she later started her own influencer-marketing agency. She shifted her business to talent management after meeting and signing the D'Amelios as talent.  Mann has been writing and producing for over 25 years, has worked with artists like P!nk, and has cowritten songs nominated for a Grammy. He met Jones over a decade ago while they were both working at Columbia Records, and Jones reached out to him last year looking to see if he would be interested in managing the family together.  The D'Amelios are also represented by UTA agents Greg Goodfried and Ali Berman, who cohead the digital talent department, and music agent David Klein, who also played a role in the song development. Since working with the family, Jones and Mann have constantly scoured social-media for new talent, and they are "always texting each other links to potential talent," Mann said. They want to continue to work with digital clients who sing and dance on new projects.  "We aren't interested in one lane," Jones said. "We are looking for people who want a well-rounded career."SEE ALSO: Inside UTA's deal with TikTok star Charli D'Amelio and how the talent agency plans to expand her influencer business Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: What it's like inside North Korea's controversial restaurant chain

Greyp has announced a line of high-tech electric mountain bikes with price tags up to $16,999.  The company is spun out of EV maker Rimac, which is known for building some of the fastest cars on the planet.  Greyp's G6 e-bikes come with integrated action cameras, a handlebar-mounted computer, internet connectivity, and a heart-rate monitor, among other tech-filled features.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Established car manufacturers like BMW, Audi, and Ford have been making their way into the micromobility game with electric bikes and scooters. Now, boutique carmakers are joining the party as well.  Greyp — pronounced "grape" — is a new e-bike company spun out of Rimac Automobili, a Croatian carmaker that builds limited-run, high-performance electric sports cars. Rimac says its latest creation, the C Two, boasts more than 1,900 horsepower, a top speed of 258 mph, and a 0-to-60-mph time of 1.85 seconds. Thus, it's not surprising that when Rimac decided to build e-bikes, it went a bit over the top. Greyp's line of G6 mountain bikes, which the company recently said would be available for the US market, are packed with tech — including GPS, internet connectivity, a heart-rate monitor, dual action cameras, and other gadgets.  Take a closer look at Greyp's G6 series below. Greyp — a sister company of electric-supercar builder Rimac — recently released a lineup of tech-packed electric mountain bikes for the US market. The G6 series of bikes is the brainchild of Mate Rimac — whom Greyp calls "Croatia's Elon Musk" — and was developed with help from the EV maker's auto team. The result, Greyp says, "is a full-carbon trail bike with a high-tech heart and an e-supercar soul." The bikes come with pedal-assist capabilities, meaning the electric motor kicks in when the rider is pedaling. That's a typical feature for e-mountain bikes. Depending on the model chosen, the G6 comes with either a 250-watt or a 460-watt motor. The bikes' 36-volt, 700Wh batteries provide up to 60 miles of pedal assist under normal conditions, Greyp says. The battery, prominently displayed below the rear shock, is removable. The mountain bikes are full suspension, meaning they have shock absorbers in both front and rear. All that is great, but fairly common in the electric-mountain-bike landscape. Where the Greyp G6 really stands out is in its tech. Greyp's bikes come with built-in 4G connectivity through T-Mobile. That means owners can remotely lock and track their bike. The G6 also comes with an integrated display, which lets cyclists log rides, check their battery, and map routes. Thanks to their internet connectivity, the bikes can get over-the-air software updates. Plus, the G6 has wide-angle, high-definition cameras mounted in front of the handlebars ... ... and behind the seat. The cameras record entire rides, just in case owners forget to hit the button before doing a cool trick. During rides, the bike constantly measures data points including power output, cadence, speed, G-forces, barometric pressure, and heart rate. Greyp says the intention is to help riders train, compete, and to "start experiencing bike riding in a whole new way." Using an included wrist strap, the bike can adjust the amount of pedal assistance depending on a rider's heart rate. One of Greyp's electric mountain bikes won't run you in the seven figures like a Rimac supercar, but the e-bikes don't exactly come cheap either. The base model retails for $7,999, which isn't unheard of in the e-mountain-bike world. The top-of-the-line blacked-out G6.X Limited, with upgraded components and the more powerful motor, costs $16,999. There are brand-new cars you can get for less. According to its website, Greyp has electric touring and city bikes in the works.

YouTube's Partner Program lets creators earn money by monetizing their channel with video advertisements. Shelby Church, a YouTube creator, broke down how much a video with about 1 million views earns her. She also shared how different factors like watch time, audience demographic, and the video subject affect her earnings. Subscribe to Business Insider's influencer newsletter: Influencer Dashboard. This is the latest installment of Business Insider's YouTube money logs, where creators break down how much they earn. Making money from YouTube depends on a variety of factors, but amassing 1 million views can often net a creator thousands of dollars. For YouTube creator Shelby Church, who has 1.5 million subscribers, videos with about 1 million views have made between $2,000 and $5,000, she told Business Insider in January. Church has 22 videos with over 1 million views. Church's video titled "This Is How Much YouTube Paid Me For My 1,000,000 Viewed Video (not clickbait)," which has more than 8 million views, had made more than $15,000 in Google AdSense revenue in January, she said at the time. Her main source of revenue as an online creator is brand sponsorships, but her second biggest is the money she earns off the Google-placed ads in her YouTube videos. Creators with 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours are eligible to have their videos monetized with ads by joining YouTube's Partner Program. These ads are filtered by Google, and how much money a creator earns (known as AdSense revenue) depends on the video's watch time, length, video type, and viewer demographics — among other factors. YouTube recently released a new monetization metric to help creators track exactly how much money they are making from the platform called revenue per mille (RPM), which tracks what a creator earns per thousand views (after YouTube's 45% cut). The factors that play into earning the most money possible  There are several strategies creators can use to get more revenue from YouTube, Church said.  Church said creators should pay attention to three important metrics: the length of the video, the watch time, and the audience demographic.  Creators can place a certain number of ads in a video depending on its length. Videos over eight minutes long will make more money because they can include more ad breaks within the middle of the video. The more ads a video has, the more money it will ultimately earn (if people keep watching). But creators should really include only two or three ads within the middle of a video, Church said, to avoid overdoing it. "I think this amount has been good for my audience," she said. "They don't usually comment about it being too much." Viewer watch time helps determine how well a video is performing on YouTube, and high-performing videos have a greater chance of being picked up by YouTube's automated algorithm, said Petar Mandich, the chief talent officer at Addition, a talent-management company focused on influencers and creators. Another key metric creators should understand is audience demographic. North America and the UK are the two highest-earning geographical regions for video views because more companies are buying ads in these regions. If a high percentage of a video's viewers are from other regions, a creator won't make as much in AdSense revenue, Mandich said. The subject has a huge influence on how much the video earns  Some subjects, like personal finance or business, can also boost a creator's rate by attracting a lucrative audience. Marina Mogilko, an entrepreneur and YouTube creator, spoke with Business Insider last year about her three YouTube channels, and she said her business channel made more per view than the others by far. Her other channels focus on lifestyle and language. Church said in January that her video about Fulfillment By Amazon had an unusually high ad-revenue rate and that the video earned her about $30,000 in AdSense revenue from 1.8 million views. The post has been updated to include additional revenue figures and was originally published in July 2019.
