But the big-box chain is making major gains in the tech sector as well. On Tuesday, the company reported soaring sales compared to last year, with e-commerce sales nearly doubling.
The chain is also currently in the process of launching its Amazon Prime competitor, Walmart+, which CEO Doug McMillon said will provide the chain with a wealth of shopper behavior data.
Business Insider analyzed the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification's 2020 disclosure data for permanent and temporary foreign workers to see what Walmart paid employees for various tech-focused roles in different categories. The Office of Foreign Labor Certification discloses salary data each year after US companies report how much base compensation workers are offered when filing paperwork for visas on behalf of current or prospective foreign workers.
For the US, Walmart applied for 59 H-1B visas for these and other roles. Jobs listed were located in multiple states across the US.
In general, Walmart's tech-focused salaries are similar to those in other tech-focused industries. For example, software engineers at Google and Amazon generally make an average base pay of about $177,933 and $155,086, respectively, according to Glassdoor. At Walmart, senior software engineers can make between $122,400 and $170,000.
In other cases, similar job descriptions for Walmart and other companies appear to have a bit more disparity in pay. For example, while an engineering manager at Walmart can make between $100,000 and $213,116, the same role at Google and Facebook offers average base pays of $202,864 and $216,650, respectively, according to Glassdoor.
