Free Now, Uber's big ride-hailing competitor in Europe, says its overall European operations are profitable in contrast to US rivals.
Free Now also won a two-year license to operate in London in August. Uber meanwhile is scrabbling to appeal a 2019 decision to scrap its London license.
Free Now is owned by two European car giants, BMW and Daimler, who committed $1 billion in 2019 to the future of mobility in a joint venture.
Despite losing as much as 95% of revenue in some cities because of COVID-19, UK general manager Mariusz Zabrocki is optimistic about Free Now's growth prospects.

Free Now, the European Uber rival jointly owned by Daimler and BMW, says its operations are profitable despite the pandemic.
The ride-hailing service has also won a two-year operating license from London's transport regulator TfL to continue running its cab service in the UK capital.
Both achievements are a coup for Free Now, given its major US rivals Lyft and Uber remain unprofitable and saw a big dropoff in business during the pandemic.
And Uber is fighting to continue its service in London after TfL ruled the US ride-hail giant was not "fit and proper" to operate in London. Uber is due to appeal that decision in court, but still faces being kicked out of the city.
Free Now recently merged with its sister company, minicab app Kapten, to try and take on Uber in London and beyond with a platform that combines black cab and private car hire.
Free Now said its London license is the first private hire operating license awarded by TfL since the November ruling against Uber.
Free Now says it has hit profitability by staying focused on key European markets
Free Now is among several European hopefuls hoping to outgun Uber in local markets, and is owned by two of the world's biggest car makers. BMW and Daimler committed in 2019 to spending more than $1 billion on Free Now and four other future-facing mobility companies.
Other ride-hailing services on the continent include Estonia's Bolt and Mercedes Benz-backed ViaVan.
UK general manager Mariusz Zabrocki told Business Insider that Free Now is profitable in most markets it operates in, including the UK, and that its European operations are profitable overall.
He declined to give further financial detail, but a spokeswoman added: "FREE Now is profitable in most of the markets where it operates, including the UK, and also in its European operations as a whole."
Zabrocki attributes this underlying profitability to the startup's focus on launching in Europe's biggest cities where it can be one of the two or three biggest players.
Free Now currently operates in 150 cities across 17 markets in Europe.
Nonetheless the pandemic has hammered the revenues of all ride-hail platforms. Uber reported a 29% hit to Q2 revenue compared with the same period last year, while Free Now says that revenue dropped between 60% and 95% depending on the city.
"April and May were extremely difficult, and that's the period where we lost a lot of revenue across Europe, like every other company," said Zabrocki. "But in June, in July, the whole of our European operations were profitable."
In some markets like Greece, demand for Free Now's services has rebounded and it is now growing year on year, while in others mobility is far from its pre-pandemic levels, said Zabrocki.
In London, around 41% of the city is moving compared to normal levels, according to the Citymapper mobility index.
Zabrocki is still optimistic about the outlook for Free Now: "Even if we're not completely back to the same levels of mobility, even if we're in about 70-80% of the mobility levels that we had before Corona, I expect our business to be actually up compared to the past."
Free Now claims it's different to Uber both in regulatory approach and in how it treats drivers
Free Now wants to set itself apart from Uber, which has faced years of scrutiny from legislators over its treatment of drivers and from regulators over the way it handles customer safety.
"I think we're really different from Uber in that we have very sharp focus on safety. Also on the driver side, so not only protecting customers, but protecting drivers from from any safety incidents," said Zabrocki, adding that Free Now has a zero tolerance approach to driver abuse.
Uber has become a lightning rod for the debate around how app-based businesses treat casual workers, or "gig economy" workers, such as its drivers.
The US firm is currently appealing a decision to reclassify those drivers as workers instead of contractors in the UK's Supreme Court, a landmark decision that could guarantee them rights such as paid holiday and the national minimum wage. The company is also being sued by European drivers who want access to their personal data.
Another area of contention, particularly in London, is what ride-hailing services are doing to established taxi drivers. London's black cab drivers have been vocal, successful anti-Uber lobbyists.
But Free Now has sidestepped this controversy by offering ride-hailing services for both private hire cab drivers and black cab drivers.
Zabrocki claims Free Now's drivers have greater flexibility than their counterparts on Uber.
"Our approach is different, we give more flexibility to drivers," said Zabrocki. "We give them more freedom to choose [which] rides they want to accept, and how many hours they want to work, whether they want to work for another operator."
Still, the company's drivers are subject to certain performance controls. Just as Uber drivers can be kicked off the platform if their rating falls too low — around 4.6, according to prior reporting from Business Insider — so too can Free Now drivers.
According to Zabrocki, this is to guarantee customer safety.
"Especially when someone has poor ratings because of safety-related incidents, we would definitely remove them from the platform," said Zabrocki. "We would suspend the driver and also notify TfL … That's not only common sense, but that's the legal requirement."
A future growth area for Free Now is electric scooters.
It already operates businesses across a number of European countries, such as Germany, Portugal, and Poland, and is looking to bid for a London license once the process kicks off.
In June, the government fast-tracked plans for e-scooters trials, making them legal on UK roads for the first time.
"The scooter business is at a much earlier stage, but it has really has great unit economics," said Zabrocki. Renaissance Technologies sold its Apple and Amazon stakes and ramped up its Tesla investment last quarter, a regulatory filing shows.
Jim Simons' quantitative hedge fund likely raked in $600 million to $900 million by selling the two tech stocks.
RenTech also raised its Tesla stake by 44% after slashing it by 80% in the first quarter.
Moreover, the fund increased its Zoom position by 160%, making the startup one of its five most valuable holdings.

Renaissance Technologies, one of the largest and most successful hedge funds in history, cashed out its Apple and Amazon stakes and boosted its position in Tesla last quarter, according to a regulatory filing.
RenTech, a quantitative hedge fund founded by Cold War codebreaker and MIT math professor Jim Simons, sold its roughly 193,000 Amazon shares and 979,000 Apple shares in the three months to June 30.
It probably raked in a total of $600 million to $900 million, based on the two stocks' trading ranges in the period. The sales will fuel concerns that the tech titans, which have skyrocketed in value this year, are overpriced and set to retreat.

RenTech, which relies on algorithms to make many of its trading decisions, also lifted its stake in Tesla by 44% to 1.1 million shares. The move is a swift reversal for the fund, given it owned 3.9 million shares in Elon Musk's electric-car company at the end of December 2019, only to sell 80% of them in the first quarter of this year.
Even so, Tesla was RenTech's 10th most valuable holding at the end of June, up from its 42nd biggest at the end of March. Its rise up the ranks reflected the share purchases and Tesla's stock price more than doubling last quarter.
RenTech's other notable trades included boosting its stake in Zoom Video Communications by about 160% to 7.3 million shares. Those were worth $1.8 billion at the end of June, meaning the video-conferencing platform was the fund's fourth-biggest holding.

SpaceX recently won a 40% share of a prized agreement with the Space Force to launch classified US payloads into orbit.
But the rocket company, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, remained curiously silent for days after the announcement.
Musk broke the silence on Thursday by accusing rival United Launch Alliance, which won a majority of the rocket contracts, of being "a complete waste of taxpayer money."
Tory Bruno, ULA's CEO, responded to Musk by congratulating SpaceX on its award.
Musk has a longstanding feud with ULA over its history, rocket designs, and launch pricing.

On August 7, the US Space Force announced two winners of a coveted agreement to launch dozens of spy satellites and other classified payloads into orbit.
United Launch Alliance won a 60% share of the future missions, planned for 2022 through 2027, while SpaceX scooped up the remaining 40%. Both companies beat out rivals Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, and Northrop Grumman for the multibillion-dollar spoils of the agreement, called National Security Space Launch Phase 2.
But in series of tweets by Elon Musk on Thursday, and following days of silence, the SpaceX founder appeared to be remarkably unhappy with his company's share of the missions.
ULA quickly trumpeted its win with a press release. "ULA is honored to be selected as one of two launch providers in this procurement," said Tory Bruno, ULA's president and CEO.
"This is a groundbreaking day, culminating years of strategic planning and effort by the Department of the Air Force, [National Reconnaissance Office], and our launch service industry partners," William Roper, the Air Force's assistant secretary for acquisition, technology, and logistics, said in a press release.
Even Blue Origin and Northrop Grumman told reporters they were "disappointed" in statements.
SpaceX, however, said nothing.
The company has not issued a public statement about its win worth more than $2 billion, nor did its communications team appear to respond to any requests for comment from niche and national outlets alike. (SpaceX also did not acknowledge questions from Business Insider for this and a prior article about the award.)
That is, until Thursday afternoon — when Musk spoke up by bitterly criticizing ULA on Twitter.
Musk: 'ULA is a complete waste of taxpayer money'
What spurred Musk into speaking up was a tongue-in-cheek tweet by Tim Fernholz, a reporter at Quartz who publishes a weekly newsletter about the industry called "Space Business." In promoting the latest edition, Fernholz poked fun at the evasive culture of the commercial rocket industry.
"Much of this newsletter is sealed to protect the competitive secrets of SpaceX and the other bidders, but redacted filings give us a clue about what Musk and company are upset about," he said Thursday.
Fernholz linked to his newsletter's August 13 edition, which led with this: "We've found something Elon won't tweet about."
The piece made note of SpaceX's public absence when it should be "a crowning moment" for the company, given its years of effort to even compete for those government contracts. (Jeff Foust of SpaceNews wrote that SpaceX "joins the establishment" with its new Pentagon award.)
Fernholz speculated about possible reasons why SpaceX would stay mum, ranging from not yet having received a debrief from the DoD on how the contract decisions were made, to the rocket company's ongoing lawsuit with the US government — a legal protest SpaceX filed for being shut out of a lucrative program to develop its Falcon Heavy rocket system.
Musk, who apparently read the newsletter, replied to Fernholz's tweet by blasting SpaceX's co-awardee, ULA.
"Efficiently reusable rockets are all that matter for making life multiplanetary & 'space power,'" Musk tweeted. "Because their rockets are not reusable, it will become obvious over time that ULA is a complete waste of taxpayer money."
ULA did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
However, Bruno — the company's CEO — publicly weighed in on the matter a couple of hours after Musk's criticisms.
"I congratulate @SpaceX on their USAF NSS Phase 2 award," Bruno said when a user asked how he'd respond to the SpaceX CEO.
Musk's beef with ULA goes back years before the company even existed
When Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, well-funded and established rocket-industry players like Boeing and Lockheed Martin more or less shrugged.
While SpaceX's top engineers toiled to build the company's first rocket system, called Falcon 1, though, Musk used what tools he could to fight a powerful traditional grip on the industry.
Boeing and Lockheed had won a previous iteration of NSSL, called the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program, and it anointed them as the sole two companies certified to launch military satellites. In part to end an extraordinary racketeering suit in 2005, though, the two companies asked to merge their rocket-launching businesses into a 50-50 venture.
SpaceX sued to fight that joining of forces by alleging anticompetitive behavior. It lost, and ULA was born in 2006, becoming the sole and increasingly expensive launch provider for DoD satellites for years.
Musk's company pushed forward, though, simultaneously developing a new Falcon 9 rocket to launch commercial and NASA payloads, and a Grasshopper test vehicle. Grasshopper led to self-landing booster technology that was later incorporated into Falcon 9 rockets, which first worked in late 2015 and now saves SpaceX millions of dollars per launch. (It also pushed ULA to evolve its strategy.)
In 2014, SpaceX had numerous Falcon 9 launches under its belt, as well as big NASA contracts and increasing experience. So when Russia began its invasion of Crimea, the company sprang at the chance to sue the Air Force over its use of the Atlas V rocket — a ULA vehicle that relied on sanctioned Russian-made engines.
Musk also publicly attacked the price of ULA's missions. "This contract is costing the US taxpayers billions of dollars for no reason," Musk told NPR in May 2014, describing the rockets as "insanely expensive."
The government settled with SpaceX in 2015, allowing it to compete for defense contracts. But Musk's distaste for ULA continued, despite sometimes amicable interactions with the company.
In 2018, he assailed ULA's lucrative launch defense contracts, claiming they are "nutty high" for costing multiple times the projected price of a Falcon Heavy. And when a Twitter user brought up ULA's upcoming and partly reusable rocket system, called Vulcan-Centaur, Musk said: "I will seriously eat my hat with a side of mustard if that rocket flies a national security spacecraft before 2023." ("Wow," Bruno, ULA's CEO, tweeted in reply.)
On Thursday, Musk again attacked ULA over its traditional Atlas V and Delta IV rockets, which are not reusable and the Air Force plans not to fly after 2022 and 2023, respectively.
"Nobody would suggest buying airplanes that only fly once & then crash into the ocean. That would be absurd," Musk said, later adding: "So why is this madness acceptable for Boeing/Lockheed rockets?"
In picking new rockets to get away from the Russian engines and lower its program costs, the DoD said it leaned most heavily on "technical factors" and, to a lesser degree, price and past performance, according to Ars Technica.
ULA has launched 140 space missions in a row without failure — the latest of which was a nuclear-powered Mars rover. (SpaceX has consecutively launched 61 rockets without losing a payload.) And though the Vulcan-Centaur booster has yet to fly — unlike SpaceX's Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rockets — variants of the system's upper-stage Centaur rocket have flown more than 250 times.
For flying spy satellites, one of which can cost a billion dollars or more, a sterling launch record appears to count a lot in divvying up contract awards.
"[Defense department customers] don't care whether [the launch cost] is $100 million or $300 million; it's in the noise," Alan Stern, a former NASA associate administrator and leader of the New Horizons mission to Pluto, told Air & Space magazine in 2012. Epic Games sued Apple and Google on Thursday for booting its popular video game "Fortnite" from their app stores, accusing the companies of engaging in monopolistic behavior.
It's the latest escalation in a long-running fight between the tech giants and app developers, who claim Apple and Google unfairly wield their control over mobile app marketplaces and operating systems to stifle competition.
The lawsuits also come as lawmakers and regulators are growing more concerned that tech companies have become too powerful and are threatening to crack down.

Why did Epic sue Apple and Google?
On Thursday morning, Epic announced a permanent 20% discount on the in-game currency players use within "Fortnite" to purchase upgrades and customize their characters. But Epic said it couldn't offer the same discount to mobile players because Apple and Google take a 30% cut of all in-app purchases.
Instead, Epic introduced a way for players to pay it directly within the iOS and Android apps, saying it could then pass along the savings to them. But in bypassing Apple and Google's payment systems, Epic broke their app store rules, and the companies swiftly removed "Fortnite."
Epic immediately fired back with dueling lawsuits and a video roasting Apple's most iconic ad, accusing the tech giants of engaging in monopolistic behavior with their app store policies, the latest broadside in its ongoing battle with the companies.
Why does Epic say Apple and Google's policies are unfair?
For years, app developers like Epic have taken issue with the 30% commission Apple and Google charge on in-app purchases, which developers say the companies can only get away with because they dominate the mobile operating system market (most smartphones run on iOS or Android) and make it nearly impossible to download apps outside of their own app stores.
In its lawsuit against Google, Epic claimed that through a variety of legal, technical, and design obstacles including "scary, repetitive security pop-ups" to warn users about non-Play Store app downloads, Google had "installed itself as an unavoidable middleman for app developers who wish to reach Android users and vice versa."
Epic also said in an FAQ on its website that Apple doesn't treat all developers the same, and allows "thousands of apps" including "Amazon, Grubhub, Nike SNKRS, Best Buy, DoorDash, Fandango, McDonald's, and StubHub" to collect direct payments.
Who else is on Epic's side?
Several major developers have already rallied behind Epic. Spotify, which sued Apple over separate but related antitrust issues last year, told Recode's Peter Kafka that "Apple's unfair practices have disadvantaged competitors and deprived consumers for far too long."
A spokesperson for Match Group, which owns dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge, Match, and OkCupid, told Business Insider "we fully support Epic Games' efforts today to show how Apple uses its dominant position and unfair policies to hurt consumers, app developers and entrepreneurs."
Others have yet to speak out on Epic's lawsuits specifically, but have taken issue with Apple's in-app payment policies in the past. Subscription-based email app Hey sparred with Apple in June, and Stratechery author Ben Thompson tweeted that other developers had experienced similar issues.
What have Apple and Google said in their defense?
Apple said in a statement following its decision to remove "Fortnite" that its policies "create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users."
Apple also said developers like Epic "have benefited from the App Store ecosystem — including its tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers."
Google issued a similar statement in response to Epic's lawsuit, saying it has "consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users," adding that "the open Android ecosystem lets developers distribute apps through multiple app stores."
Why does this fight matter?
As Business Insider's Troy Wolverton wrote, Epic's deliberate violation of Apple's policy appeared to be part of a calculated ploy to lure Apple into an "antitrust trap" by provoking it into "flexing its enormous power" over app developers.
Epic's move thrusts both Apple and Google back into the antitrust spotlight just weeks after their CEOs were grilled during a congressional hearing by lawmakers who argued the companies were unfairly using their size and market power to stifle competition.
Apple CEO Tim Cook was specifically questioned about how Apple treats developers, and while Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent Alphabet, fielded more questions about how Google uses search results to favor its own products, regulators have raised similar concerns about its Play Store and Android policies.
Apple and Google are both currently facing multiple antitrust lawsuits and regulatory investigations, and Epic's case could add fuel to the fire.
Additionally, Epic may prove to be a more fierce challenger simply because its own success as a company isn't as dependent on either Apple or Google. A US TikTok employee, Patrick Ryan, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to sue the Trump administration over President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to ban TikTok.
Ryan believes the executive order will mean TikTok can't pay its 1,500 US employees, and he says his lawyer plans to file a suit next week.
Trump last week signed the executive order, which bars US individuals and businesses from doing business with TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, starting September 20.
"The fear is that we will not be able to receive our paychecks after September 20," Patrick Ryan, a technical program manager, told Business Insider. "I'm concerned my constitutional rights are being violated here."

While the company itself holds off on its threatened legal action responding to Trump's recent executive order seeking to ban the company from the US beginning in September, TikTok employees are threatening a lawsuit designed to lodge an injunction ensuring employees continue to get paid.
The man behind the prospective legal action, the TikTok technical program manager Patrick Ryan, has chipped in $5,000 of his own cash as part of a $30,000 crowdfunding attempt to support the lawsuit.
Ryan launched a GoFundMe page on Wednesday, which has so far seen 29 other donors contribute $4,073 toward the effort to ensure TikTok continues to pay its 1,500 US employees.
He believes that Trump's executive order, which would make it illegal for any US entity to conduct business with TikTok next month if a deal is not done to sell the company's US operations to a US firm, would be unconstitutional.
"That means after September 20, myself and 1,500 of my colleagues won't be able to receive a paycheck because it'll be illegal for the company to pay us," Ryan said in a video he posted to TikTok.
"The fear is that we will not be able to receive our paychecks after September 20," he told Business Insider. "I'm concerned my constitutional rights are being violated here. I don't mean to sound overly lawyerly, but due process is a concept, and this is one example where that's really violated."
"There's been no due process here," he added. "There's been no procedural process that would lead any employee who works at TikTok now to conclude this type of thing would even be possible."
Ryan said he wasn't sure why Trump had decided to introduce the executive order.
"I'm not being facetious," he said. "This is in fact the point of a decision made without due process. People are like: 'What is it?'"
Ryan says he has support from numerous employees concerned about their future with the company — and their future income — but the processes involved in constitutional-rights lawsuits mean it requires just one person to be the plaintiff.
Ryan, who joined TikTok's California office in March after more than nine years at Google, says he informed TikTok about his plan to take legal action and the company neither supported nor stopped him. (He didn't expect the company to support him, he said, because it's a personal-rights matter.)
Ryan will be represented by Mike Godwin, a Washington, DC-based civil-liberties lawyer who is a member of the board of trustees of the Internet Society.
"It can't be the case that President Trump wants to destroy a social-media platform just because it makes fun of him, but then apparently that's what happens," Godwin told Business Insider, citing the comedian Sarah Cooper's popular TikTok videos mocking the US president.
"Once you see something that looks so bizarre happening, you feel that you have to find a way to be helpful," he said.
Godwin foresees filing the lawsuit on behalf of Ryan whether or not the GoFundMe reaches its $30,000 target. "Sometime by the end of next week we'll have a lawsuit filed," he said.
"We don't want to let this dispute mature. We think it's an emergency and needs to be pursued now. We want to draw attention to the fact that this is the White House trying to destroy the jobs of 1,500 workers."
